First Thing’s First
• How do you get better at a sport?
• Let’s start with the first one:– Response to Essay Topic: The writer responds effectively to the writing task
(prompt, question, topic, etc.) . The writer demonstrates that he or she can present the ideas of the author(s) cogently and develop his or her own ideas in response.
• In other words, did you address all parts of the prompt and did you explain your OWN ideas?

• And now the second:– Understanding and Use of Text: The writer provides the reader a clear and accurate
understanding of the text and effectively uses the ideas in the text to develop the writer’s response.
• In other words, did you show that you understood the ideas in the text and did you use those ideas to talk about your own?

• Prompt: According to Rosen, what is “societal forgetting”? Why is it important or valuable? What do you think of his views? (3 Qs)
• Common answer: Societal forgetting is erasing external memories.
• Yes, that’s what he said, but does that explain it? • How did you do? Find the sentence(s)
where you explained what “societal forgetting” is and underline it.
According to Rosen:“Before” Technology– Make a mistake– Few people know
about it– Apologize– People may forgive– Over time, it gets
forgotten– MOST people forgive
“After” Technology• Make a mistake• LOTS of people know about it,
including people you don’t know AND they have proof (pictures, chat text, videos, etc.)
• Apologize• People may forgive• No one forgets• Most people may NOT forgive
because they CAN’T forget.That’s societal forgetting!
