INTRODUCTION "The Storm" was written by Kate Chopin on July 19, 1898. The short story was first published inThe Complete Works of Kate Chopinin 1969. The story is set in the late nineteenth century at Louisiana. "The Storm," a short story about an extramarital affair in the South, is very sexually explicit, especially for the time it was written, in 1898. Because of that, the story wasn't published during Chopin's lifetime. Shes one of the first women writers who pioneered writing about womens emancipation.She has written about the inner as much as the physical afflictions that women have suffered in her contemporary society. She has addressed issues related to womens repression and suppression both sexually and spiritually. POINT OF VIEW FIRST PERSON A story told in narrating charcters own voice. Story told from the inside of the story Uses the personal prounoun i Example : I dont have a gown to wear for the ball!I will find her. The lady whose foot fits this slipper will be the one I marry!SECOND PERSON Stories told in second are told as if feeling someone else what they are doing .Example : You missed the bus again because you just couldn't convince yourself to get out of bed. The comforter made a cosy nest around you, and there was the cat, a warm ball of fur curled next to you. So you had to walk all the way to work.

THIRD PERSONEverything is seen through the narrators eyes, and the reader can only tell what other characters are thinking or feeling .( Narrator is free to go wherever they wish, to peer inside the minds and hearts of characters at will and tell us what they are thinking or feeling )

4The point of view in The storm Third Person (Omniscient)The point of view is third person narration because she and he says or said is used. At the same time it is total omniscience because we know what Calixta and Alcee think.Evidence : But she felt very warm and often stopped to mop ......... ( Part II, Paragraph 1, Line 2) So the storm passed and every one was happy ( Part V, Last Paragraph, Line 6 ) symbolizing Calixta and Alce were happy to have the affair. Oh! she remembered; for in Assumption he had kissed her ........... ( Part II, Paragraph 18, Line 1)SETTING Types of setting:Neutral setting: the setting is not important, just a place where the action takes place.Spiritual setting: the values embodied in the physical setting; there is no easy relationship between physical setting and moral values.

Social Background

There are some subtle class differences between the four main charactersIn lousiana , Creoles has higher class than Acadians : Alce and his wife Clarisse are Creoles, descendants of French settlers in Louisiana.Their language is a rich combination of French and English. When he speaks in this story, he does so in more formal English, even though he understands Calixta's French.Evidence :"May I come and wait on your gallery till the storm is..........( Part II, Paragraph 3, line 12) Calixta and her husband Bobint are Acadians, descendants of French-American exiles from Acadia, Nova Scotia. Their language is a rich combination of French and English. Evidence : - "My! Bibi, w'at will yo' mama say! You ought to be ashame'. You oughta........
