This has become a common thing to do for this genre of film. In this part of the trailer, a handheld camera is used to show the burning car which takes the audience by surprise, shocking the audience. This type of handheld shot is used effectively to give away small sections of the movie but not the entire thing. This close up of the miss-en-scene props such as the burning car is also very effective to take the audience by surprise.

-EDITING

Lots of close ups are also used to show the emotions of the characters faces. When it cuts to the victims faces on a close up it shows the audience that they are scared and worried, which makes it encouraging for the audience to watch the movie. These close up shots are also shown on the antagonist, but for a very short time so it doesn't give everything away to the audience. These shots are also blurry and handheld or on another screen to make it more mysterious and scary which is very effective. All images above are examples of how close ups are used effectively to create an effective trailer.

Here to the left is an example of a zoom shot used in the trailer. this is used effectively. This type of shot is used to make the short more early and make the audience wait for something to happen. Long dark open spaces are used in horror movies like this as it suggests the antagonist is hiding somewhere or going to appear which is an effective thing to do for a horror movie trailer. Over all camera work has been used well in this trailer to not give away the whole plot but to whets the audience’s appetite and give a general idea of the story.

Throughout the trailer, lots of cutting is used to switch between different shots and different scenes of the film so the whole plot of the film isn't given away. Here are a couple of transitions used in the trailer that have been used effectively to make the trailer interesting and engaging but not give away too much. This type of fast cross cutting helps the audience get an idea of the story, and gives an opportunity to surprise the audience by cutting to a more tense part of the movie, which takes the audience by surprise.

This is done well by when the camera is on the antagonist is quickly cuts away so the audience doesn't pay too much attention to the antagonist. This is done to make people want to watch the movie and see more and create more suspense. From the trailer you can also see that an old real film is a main prop. The editing is like a broken film, which is a good effect to use, making it a bit distorted and fuzzy when the antagonist is shown or switching between different scenes.

The props used are also very effective, they main prop is the film projector, which makes the films on the movie look fuzzy and distorted which fits in with the behavior of the antagonist, which is a good effect to make the suspense more effective for the audience. The use of editing for the trailer has also fit in very well with this main prop for the movie trailer. The fuzzy picture is what effect the prop gives which makes the antagonist displayed by the bushes more mysterious and scary which is very effective for horror genre. They have also used a typical horror murder weapon as one of the cuts in the trailer which is an ax this represents a typical slasher murder or a weapon of defense against the antagonist. This is effective as it clearly represents the idea of a reason for a weapon being used in the film which makes it more appealing towards the audience

-MISE-EN-SCENE

Fast pace cutting is a common method for horror movies, and this method has also been used for the sinister trailer. And from doing so has worked well. The use of captions of the screen is also well done, to keep the audience’s attention and to give a bit more away and whet the audience’s appetite for the movie.as you can see above the use of captions are clear and the background is like a fuzzy broken film which is a relevant and effect use of editing.

Mis-en-scene is very important when creating a horror movie. But in the trailer all can’t be given away, I think the sinister trailer has done this well. The use of costume for the characters is very casual, but the antagonist is displayed in a dark long cloak, which makes the antagonist look scarier towards the audience. The use of lighting in this particular shot is effective as it flashes lightening, and you see a dark cloak which makes this more mysterious and scarier to the audience, the difference is displayed above.

At the beginning of the trailer, high lighting is used to show when everything is happy and calm, but as the trailer goes on low-key lighting is used to represent a much more sinister feel and a much scarier feel to it. Nearly the whole trailer is used in low-key lighting to represent the horror. Lighting has been used effective, the images in the film are represented as a film projector to fit in with flashing images to surprise the audience and whet the audience’s appetite for the movie. A couple of examples are shown below as to how lighting has been used effectively in the trailer. the dark lighting in a trailer needs to be used for a horror, this is also usually used with wide open spaces to give the idea that the antagonist is hiding somewhere which is usually the plot in many horror movie, The suspense of a hidden character always has the audience on the edge of the seat which is what effect this trailer gives by using the

SOUNDThroughout the opening of the trailer, no non-diegetic sound is used, the non-diegetic sound builds up and often when the antagonist is shown, the sound goes really load to scare and surprise the audience. There is no voice over, but the dialogue from the film is used effectively to still create more suspense. A distorted noise is also used to represent the film projector in the movie which is a vital prop in the movie and the sound with editing has been used very effective to create more suspense and thrill.

The trailer is very conventional for the genre. They have used typical but effective use of the technical areas to create an effective horror movie trailer. There is not voice over the dialogue is from the movie, which is effective to show their tones, and how they have reacted to the antagonist. Fast pace cutting is also conventional for a horror so it creates more suspense. The use of lighting is also very conventional, the have made the buildup in sound and use of a radio report was used in the sinister trailer, which is a conventional feature in horror movie trailers to create more suspense and impact on the audience.

The use of costume with the low key lighting is conventional for horror movies because the antagonist has a long black cloak which fits in with dark background, making him more mysterious and making the audience sit on the edge of the seat waiting for him to appear. This type of low key lighting and wide spaces with dark clothing for the antagonist is conventional for horror movies.

All 4 technical areas have used effective features to make this trailer conventional to horror genre and take the audience by surprise which is one of the main aims and feeling that horror movies can give to their audience. the props used are conventional to horror movies, they have used an Axe a blade and a baseball bat as short cuts to represent a self-defence weapon against something or someone or a weapon that the antagonist has them self this creates a more sinister feel which is conventional for horror movies to use props in the trailers like this.

CONVENTIONS OF FORMThe form for this trailer is very conventional for a horror movie trailer. The beginning of the trailer represents the scene and the family moving into a new home and being very happy. The trailer also gives away why the family is moving, so the father can write a new book about a series of murders. But as the trailer progresses the audiences realizes there is much more to it than that. This is used by high lighting to show they are happy but dark lighting as the trailer progresses. Here you can see further along in the trailer. Dark lighting is used to make it scarier further on, with the build-up in sound and more flashing images and faster cuts as the trailer progresses this is a conventional form for a horror movie trailer if the trailer is to take the audience by surprise. The form can’t give too much away, which is done effectively in this. They have given a short outline of what to expect but not completely which leaves the audience thinking of what will happen. not too many captions are displayed either which is good because they have concentrated more on the film not on making loads of captions which is what people don't want. This is a conventional form for a horror movie trailer.
