The repeated use of close ups allow the audience to clearly see the emotions that the characters are going through. The ability for the audience to see facial expressions, tears and body language closely reinforces their understanding of what is happening.

In the kitchen abuse scene the directors use of a long shot allows the audience to clearly see the force and anger behind every blow and action. For example when the he throws a book at her head.

Sound: The use of slow string and piano music evokes feelings of sadness and

emotions to the audience. Allowing them to feel more and become part of the emotions within the film

The use of non diegetic dialogue throughout the film create a sense or realism, letting the audience know that this is a real persons story and that this could happen to anyone.

Editing: The slow paced editing matches the slow pace of the background

music this allows the feelings and the thought of the audience to keep pace.

The use of fast paced cuts in the kitchen abuse scene helps to create the sense of a rush similar to the rush of emotions both the audience and characters would be feeling.

Other: The use of a black man being portrayed a violent creates even more

realism for the audience, linking back to real world stereotypes.
