Analysis of a short film (what does virgin mean)By future shorts

    Narrative:

This short film is about a conversation between a mother and her curiousdaughter. It starts of as what looks like a normal afternoon. The mother iscooking dinner and the child is doing their homework at the dining table. Theyoung girl then asks her mother a question what does virgin mean! Themother is taken by sur"rise and fumbles for words as she tries to e#"lain it toher young daughter without being too gra"hic. As the mother e#"lains theyoung girls asks more questions causing the other to rethink her answer.$hen she has finished e#"laining to the best of her ability the little girl thenasks another question this is where the mother reali%es the mistake she hasmade regarding the original question& causing a shock to her system.Cinematography:

As the little girls asks her mother the question a medium long shotallows the audience her facial e#"ression and body languagere"resenting shock and sur"rise. In this same shot we see the mothersbody language "ortray "anic as she tenses u" whilst trying to come u"with an answer

As the mother begins to describe love making the use if close u"s and

medium shots shows her e#citement as she begins to move faster.Sound:

As the film starts through diegetic sound the audience can hear the

mother reciting a reci"e as she cooks dinner& this invokes a feeling of

the norm within the audience as they ca. relate to this throughe#"erience.

The way that the mothers "itch in her voice raises and falls suggests to

the audience nervousness which is further enhanced throughcinematogra"hy.

The soft tones of the mothers voice reinforce her maternal nature

re"resenting her as kind and loving.Editing:

Throughout the film the shot reverse shot during the conversation

between the two characters allow the audience to see how differentlyeach character is taking the situation. $e see the innocent andintrigued looking face of a curious girl who wants and answer to herquestion and a "anic stricken mother who is unsure abut what to do orsay.

The mothers increased e#citement is reinforced by the change in "ace

of cuts. This can be argues to re"resent her heart rate as she becomesmore e#cited the cuts become faster& further reinforcing the effect thisconversation is having on her.
