The mast head

The mast had has been shortened into 3 letters, the three letters sound like the word ‘enemy’, this would suggest to the reader that the music that they talk about in this magazine is rebellious and not the mainstream kind of music, witch is what the target audience will be looking for as they are indie witch is short for independent. It is also big and red and located at the top of the page so it is the key focus of the magazine as it is the thing the audience will see first, it also needs to stand out against the other magazines in the rack, it is also red to connote danger, this will entice people as they are always looking for something different and something a little bit dangerous.

The use of flashAs they are offering something ‘extra’ this will entice people to buy the

magazine as people always want something more, the average amount is never enough and as this magazine is offering that little bit more than every other magazine it will have the edge when being sold.

The use of backgroundBehind the person in the main image we can see the background of the shot,

the location of the shot has not been randomly chosen it has been carefully placed out to give the right look and effect that is intended, he is standing in front of a lot of graffiti witch gives the feel of a real urban and street location, this is key as the main focus is of a rapper called ‘Dizzie Rascal’ who basis his music on the urban streets and places of similar relevance.

The footer The footer is placed at the bottom of the page and in this case gives the

reader extra information on what is inside the magazine, in this case they have used a lot of famous peoples name such ‘Jay z’ and ‘Paramore’, this will entice the reader as this is bands that they like to listen to on a regular basis and will like the read about, this is called ‘star power’ as it is using other stars to entice the reader into buying the magazine.

The main image

The main image is of the famous and well known rapper ‘Dizzie Rascal’ he has been placed on the front cover as he is the main focus of that certain issue of NME, they have used his facial expressions and posture to create a sense of excitement and joy to make the reader feel not just involved through the levels of eye contact but also as it appears he is jumping out of the page to start partying, he has a very excitable look on his face witch will make people believe that he is a fun and enthusiastic person witch will make them want to read the articles on him, also his posture suggests, as he is kneeling looking ready to pounce, that he is always ready for fun and partying.

The use of pull quote The use of the quote ‘I'm spreading joy all around the country’ will draw in

an audience because they all want to take part in this joy that he is said to be spreading, as they all like to feel joy and happiness through music and dizze is promising this to them, this will make the reader want to pick up the magazine and read the article that they have been given a sneak peak on.

Use of rule of thirdsThe magazine does not focus on the standard rules of the rules of thirds,

however they have placed everything they want to be seen in an area of the page that will make sure the eye is drawn to it, for example the mast head is at the top so it is the first thing on the page you see, also the main image has been made to appear very striking and central so it is the main focus of the page.

Target audience Target audience profile: the target audience for the magazine is mostly male with only 34% of the readers being female,

meaning the remaining 66% is male, the average age of the reader is around 23 with 35% of all readers being student and the remaining 61% are ABC1. The NME audience are very influential in their social circles and are twice as likely as the average to be the first amongst their friends to know what is going on. Not surprisingly the NME audience are completely obsessed by music. Reader research has demonstrated that they rely on the additional and the ads to keep them up to date with new music.
