Welcome to the Global Honors Program!

Greetings!

Welcome back to the GHP and the start of the 2016-17 academic year.

As upper-classmen, your dedication to the program through serving on groups and committees and in various leadership roles is vital to our program’s sustainability. I thank you for your service and hope you will share your enthusiasm with the incoming freshmen class as they become acclimated to the University and all the wonderful opportunities the GHP has to offer. I am also interested in learning about your ideas for ways the program can grow and evolve. Please don’t hesitate to visit me in the Honors House or the third floor of the Science Center. I look forward to the start of my seventeenth year at LHU and the excitement that comes with the beginning of a new academic year. I can't wait to reconnect with all of you when you arrive on campus. I'm sure I'll be contacting you regarding opportunities within the program and deadlines for various requirements. If you have questions, don't hesitate to contact me or one of the GHP staff members.

Good luck on a successful and memorable academic year at the Haven!Regards,

Dr. Dumm (Jackie)Director, GHP

Introduction to the Global Honors Program

As the 21st Century progresses, the world around us is becoming increasingly globalized. More and more each day, other parts of the world affect aspects of our lives in some way or another. The Lock Haven University Global Honors Program strives to provide students with opportunities that a traditional Honors Program does not. Here at Lock Haven, we strive to provide the global aspect to our Global Honors Program. All of our students are encouraged to participate in some form of education abroad program. Our program offers guest speakers, forums, and activity groups dedicated to global issues and topics. Our goal is to show our students that we do not live in a one-dimensional world; much of what we do impacts or is impacted by someone else in a different country.

The Global Honors Program is housed in the Honors House, located on Susquehanna Avenue. Our goal is to make the Honors House your “Home Away from Home” on campus. Feel free to use it to study, use the computer, hang out, cool down, relax, and also as a place to have fun. All Freshman Development Groups (FDGs) meet in the Honors House (except for special meetings), as well as many Activity Groups. The Honors House opens at 8:00 a.m. and closes when the last person leaves for the day, which is usually around 7:00 p.m.

One great benefit of the Honors House is that it hosts a computer lab specifically for Honors Students. Our computer lab is located on the second floor of the house, in the first room at the top of the stairs. We have four computers for student use, as well as a printer. If you would rather use your laptop, feel free to sit anywhere seeing as we have wireless Internet throughout the house. We can even show you how to print something right from your laptop to the Honors House Printer!

The Honors House also has three other meeting/activity rooms. The common room, located downstairs, hosts many FDGs and Activity Groups. The common room has a projector to watch a movie, some couches to nap on, and a white board to work on homework (or show off your art work). Be sure to check out our Honors Program Mascots located in the fish tank, too! The conference room upstairs has tables for large projects and meetings. We also have a lounge upstairs, which has two couches along with a TV/DVD/VCR.

All of the Honors Staff works out of the Honors House. Our secretary, Shawn O’Dell, can be found in the front office on the first floor of the house. Our Student Associate Directors are dispersed throughout the front and back offices on the first floor, as well. The Director’s office is located on the second floor of the house across from the conference room.

Academic RequirementsAlthough the Global Honors Program here at Lock Haven is made up of many unique components, we are first and foremost an Honors Program. To graduate with honors credentials, our students must fulfill two main academic requirements:

1) Complete 21 Honors Credits2) Complete a Capstone Project

Honors Credits

Honors students must complete a total of 21 credits, which is equivalent to seven (7) classes, in order to graduate with honors credentials. These credits can be attained in two ways:

1) Taking Honors-Designated Courses2) Completing Course Augmentations in non-Honors Designated Courses

5

Page 7: An Upper-Class Student’s Guide - Lock Havenlockhaven.edu/honors/documents/UC MANUAL 16-17.doc  · Web viewAn Upper-Class Student’s Guide. to the. LOCK HAVEN UNIVERSITY. ... feel

Honors Courses

Honors Students have the chance to take honors-designated classes to fulfill their 21 honors credit requirement. These courses have many benefits. They are small and limited to 25 students. This allows for the professors to grow close to the students and provide personal attention. Honors courses tend to be more discussion based and are reading and writing intensive. They are designed to challenge our students in a way that a regular class would not. Finally, all Honors courses fulfill General Education Requirements. Honors courses are taught by regular university professors with expertise in their fields.

During the first year, most honors students will take four Honors courses; 2 each in the fall and spring semester. The fall semester courses are Composition and Philosophy, while the spring semester courses are Literature and History. Beyond the first year, Honors courses are offered on a rotating basis. Some of these courses include Math in Contemporary Society, Introduction to Psychology, Nutrition for Wellness, Earth Science, and World Politics. We are constantly working on adding more Honors courses to offer for our students.

Course Augmentations

Course Augmentations are a second way to earn honors credits. Course Augmentations are special projects done in conjunction with a professor in a non-Honors designated course. This project takes the student above-and-beyond the requirements of the course. Projects vary from class to class, and should be discussed with professors and the honors director. To perform a Course Augmentation, students must complete an “Augmentation Proposal Form” that must be approved by the faculty sponsor BEFORE it is submitted to the director by the due date near the beginning of the semester (see semester calendar). The director grants the final approval of the proposal. Once the project is completed and reviewed and approved by the faculty sponsor, students must complete an Augmentation Completion Form and submit the form and project to the director by the due date near the end of the semester (see semester calendar). The director grants final approval of the completed project.

Guidelines for conducting augmentations are available on the Global Honors Program website. This process is also explained at least once a year at a Demystifying Augmentations and Capstones seminar given by the Global Honors Director. Check the Honors Website and Monday Morning Announcements for date and location of this session.

Capstone Project

The Capstone Project is the culminating project of the undergraduate Global Honors Program experience and a required element for students to graduate from Lock Haven University with the Global Honors designation. The Capstone Project is designed to be the most ambitious academic challenge that students encounter in their undergraduate career. It should be much more involved and elaborate than a standard augmentation, but not to the extent of a Graduate Thesis. The Capstone Project normally includes three major components, all to a different extent: research, writing, and presentation. Sometimes, an Independent Study (offered by departments as a 499 course) may be used through Lock Haven University to collect research while working closely with a professor. A formal document of the research follows, and then a final presentation of the work is given to complete the project.

After undertaking a number of augmentations through the Global Honors Program, this is the student’s chance to take their education to the next level, and to produce a project documenting their

undergraduate academic experience. Graduate schools and employers are very impressed with work on this scale, as it proves the caliber of achievement that can be attained based on personal initiative.

Similar to the augmentation process, there are proposal and completion forms that are required. The complete Capstone Project process is described in full in the Capstone Project Guide and References for Students and Faculty published by the Global Honors Program and available in the Honors House as well as on the Global Honors Program website. This process is also explained at least once a year at a Demystifying Augmentations and Capstones seminar given by the Global Honors Director. Check the Honors Website and Monday Morning Announcements for date and location of this session.

Co-Curricular RequirementsThe co-curricular requirements of the Global Honors Program are what make our program truly unique. Very few Honors Programs have the social activities, speakers, forums, and special events that our program has to offer. To stay in good standing with the program (which you will need to do to graduate with honors credentials), Upperclassmen Students must complete the following requirements:

1) Attend ten (10) Activity Group meetings in both the fall and spring semester.2) Attend at least two (2) Academic Events per semester.3) Complete ten (10) hours of Community Service by the end of the academic year.

Activity Groups

Activity Groups are another aspect of the Lock Haven University Global Honors Program that makes it unique. Activity groups are groups that meet once a week and deal with a specific topic of interest. Interests range from fitness and health to things such as music, sign language, debate, arts and crafts, and much more. You can find a full list of activity groups, their leaders, meeting times, and a brief synopsis of each group on the honors website.

Each group is led by at least one honors student that is a second-semester freshman or above. Throughout your four years in the Global Honors Program, you will be required to attend 10 Activity Groups per semester. We suggest you reach this by attending one group per week; however, you may choose to attend no groups some weeks, or more than one. You can go to the same group every week, or switch it up and try them all.

You may also earn Activity Group credit by attending special events. You earn 1 (one) Activity Group credit for every special event that you attend, regardless of the length of that event.

If you find that you are having difficulties fulfilling all of your required hours, set up a meeting with the SAD of Program Development and Leadership. She may be able to help you find a meeting that fits you and your time schedule. If it still is not working out, you can set up a meeting with the Program Director to discuss your situation.

Academic Events

Throughout the semester, the Global Honors Program will sponsor multiple programs/events or work with other organizations on campus to host programs/events about various topics. These events are designed to help broaden student learning and provide a glimpse into an area you may not normally have

7

Page 9: An Upper-Class Student’s Guide - Lock Havenlockhaven.edu/honors/documents/UC MANUAL 16-17.doc  · Web viewAn Upper-Class Student’s Guide. to the. LOCK HAVEN UNIVERSITY. ... feel

the chance to explore. Academic Events last only an hour, and students are required to attend the full hour. As an upper-class student, you are required to attend two (2) Academic Events per semester.

**Please, plan ahead. Event dates come out weeks in advance and are well publicized. We will not grant leeway at the end of a semester because you did not know when speakers were. Pay attention and plan ahead!**

Examples of academic events include: Public Issues Forums - Two or three times a semester, our Public Issues Forums Team (PIF)

researches a current issue and presents it to honors students. After the information is presented, students are then broken up into smaller groups to discuss the issue in more detail.

Documentary and Discussion – Offered 1-2 times per semester, come out and enjoy a ‘short’ (less than 1 hour) documentary and join in on a discussion following. These are normally offered over the lunchtime slot for those students who find it difficult to attend evening meetings.

Last Lecture Speaker Series - Based on the book "The Last Lecture" by Randy Pausch, we feature the Last Lecture Series once each semester. Current or retired professors address our students by imparting knowledge and advice that they've acquired over their lives. Each professor speaks as if this is the last lecture they will ever have the chance to give. This has become one of our most popular academic events.

Career Services Workshops - Each year we provide a personalized Career Services Workshop specifically for Honors students. In these workshops, students learn ways to improve their resumes and tweak their interviewing skills to increase their chances of landing a job right after graduation.

Campus Speakers - The Speaker Series is our most classic Academic Event and still occurs several times each semester. With a wide variety of topics, speakers give an hour-long lecture and then open the floor up to students for questions and discussion.

Honors Hours Exemptions

There are some situations and programs that you may participate that allow you to be exempt from some required Honors Hours. There are two different types of exemptions:

Activity Group Exemption: You may be eligible for an exemption from some or all activity groups only if any of the following situations apply to you in any given semester:

o Varsity Athlete in Playing Season (out of season athletes eligible for half exemption)o Completing a Capstone Project (Maximum 2 Semesters)o Athletics Training (ATEP) Blocko FDG Leadero NSF Nanoscience Scholar (must attend Nano Club meetings)o Professional Semester Education Block (normally the semester immediately before you

student teach)o Any other reason approved by the Global Honors Director

Activity Group and Academic Event Exemption: You may be eligible for an exemption from some or all activity groups and academic events if any of the following situations apply to you in any given semester:

o Student Teachingo Studying Abroado Internshipo Any other reason approved by the Global Honors Director

The Global Honors Program Director has final say on the approval or denial of Honors Hours exemptions. Partial exemptions may be given in some cases not warranting a full exemption but still deserving of some form of hours exemptions.

In order to receive an exemption, a student must complete the online Request for Honors Hours Exemption form available at the beginning of the semester. Play close attention to due dates, as there will not be any leeway given to students who fail to submit a request for exemption at the beginning of the semester. If you feel for any reason that you should be exempt, you should request that exemption by the due date at the beginning of the semester. Only under extreme circumstances will exemptions be granted further into the semester than the due date. Note: Submitting a request for exemption does not guarantee an exemption will be granted. You should receive email notification of exemption approval/denial within a week of the exemption due date; only when you receive approval should you consider your exemption official.

Community Service

The Lock Haven University Global Honors Program prides itself on giving back to the community. Upper-class students are required to complete ten hours of community service per year (spring and fall semesters combined). Students are required to submit a Community Service completion form within 2 weeks after each service event performed. This form can be found online.

Honors ProbationStudents in the Global Honors Program are expected to meet all academic requirements and complete all required co-curricular hours to stay in good standing with the Honors Program. Failure to fulfill these requirements may result in the student being placed on probation or removed from the Global Honors Program. This section is intended to outline these requirements and the appropriate sanctions for failure to complete these items.

The Global Honors Program has three types of probation:

Academic Probation: The Global Honors Program takes pride in the academic success of their students. Students are required to maintain the following requirements to stay in good standing:

- Maintain an overall grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0.- Maintain a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 in all Honors-designated courses and courses

augmented for Honors credit.

9

Page 11: An Upper-Class Student’s Guide - Lock Havenlockhaven.edu/honors/documents/UC MANUAL 16-17.doc  · Web viewAn Upper-Class Student’s Guide. to the. LOCK HAVEN UNIVERSITY. ... feel

Students failing to achieve in good standing status will be placed on Academic Probation for the following semester. To be removed from probation, students must, in that semester, improve their overall or honors G.P.A. to at least a 3.0. Students who are on Academic Probation for honors-designated courses who do not have a chance to improve on that standing in the following semester will stay on Academic Probation until they can improve that G.P.A.

Students failing to improve on the G.P.A. in the probation semester will be removed from the honors program at the end of the semester.

Students who are placed on Academic Probation are expected to devote the upmost time to their studies in the next semester in order to be removed from probation. Therefore, they will be ineligible to lead an Activity Group during the probation semester. They will be ineligible to participate in other activities on a case-by-case basis as determined by the director.

Lack of Progress Probation: In order to stay on track to graduate from the Global Honors Program with the necessary 21 honors credits, students are required to attain at least 3 honors credits per academic year, the equivalent of one honors class or augmentation. Failure to complete the minimum required 3 credits per academic year will result in the student being placed on Lack of Progress Probation with restrictions following those of students who are placed on Academic Probation (detailed above).

Co-Curricular Probation: The Global Honors Program expects all of its students to be active within the program by completing required co-curricular hours, unless a proper exemption is applied for and granted. Upper-class honors students must complete the following co-curricular requirements to remain in good standing:

- Attend at least 10 Activity Groups during both fall and spring semesters- Attend at least 2 Academic Events during both fall and spring semesters.- Complete 10 hours of Community Service during both fall and spring semesters combined.

Students failing to achieve in good standing status will be placed on Co-Curricular Probation for the following semester. To be removed from probation, students must, in that semester, complete all required hours and be in good standing at the end of the semester.

Students failing to complete all required hours during the probation semester will be removed from the honors program at the end of the semester. Any student failing to complete at least 25% of the required co-curricular hours during one semester will be immediately removed from the Global Honors Program.

Students placed on Co-Curricular Probation will not be permitted to lead an Activity Group during the probation semester. Additionally, they are not eligible for application or participation at Honors Conferences, the PASSHE Summer Honors Trip, and other events as determined by the Director.

The director of the Global Honors Program has final say in determination of probation status and removal of a student from the Program. They may grant exemptions in any situation they deem necessary.

Keeping Up With Everything HonorsWithout a doubt, there exists a lot of information, dates, and times to keep track of. But the Global

Honors Program is here to help you keep it all straight.

Monday Morning Announcements

To help you keep track of what’s going on in the program, the Global Honors Program sends out ‘Monday Morning Announcements’ (MMA) at the beginning of every week. This email has in it Program Announcements (speakers, forums, deadlines, etc), and Activity Group announcements (meetings times and places, this week’s activities). It is very important that you read the MMA to find all the week’s information. Often students will come and say they did not know about a meeting, etc; but, before you say that, make sure you have read the MMA!

Global Honors Website

The Global Honors Program has its own webpage on the Lock Haven University Website. To access the website, you can either click the Honors Center link on the Lock Haven University homepage, or manually type in our website: www . lhup . edu / honors . On the website you will find everything in this manual and more. It has information on professors, classes, upcoming events, special teams, forms, the master schedule for the semester, and much more. Make sure to take some time to check out the website and become familiar with it throughout the semester.

Status Emails

Twice a semester, you will receive an email from the program giving you information on what you have completed throughout the semester to date. These are just guides. Just because the email may say you are delinquent in hours does not mean that you are in trouble with the program. This is just to show you how much you need to complete by the end of the semester. If you think that something is incorrect in your email, immediately contact the sender of the email. They will then check the information and talk to the Student Associate Director to fix the situation.

Honors Facebook and Twitter PagesThe Honors Program has its own Facebook Page and Twitter pages to help you keep up-to-date with everything Honors! Visit our Facebook page to see reminders and updates from ‘The Honors House’ (we have a ‘person page’, the House, who you must friend request), view event pictures, and chat with other Honors Students. Want to Get More Involved? There are many ways to get more involved in the honors program. Whether you are looking for a little extra money while at school, or just want some way to get more involved and volunteer your time to the program, there are many options for you.

Paid PositionsBelow is a list and description of all the paid opportunities within the Global Honors Program.

Student Associate Directors

The Global honors Program has four Student Associate Directors who handle most of the day-to-day running of the program. They work closely with the Program Director, Program Secretary, and students to complete their tasks. These are paid positions and new Student Associate Directors are hired as former Student Associate Directors graduate or must resign for some other reason. All new Student Associate Directors go through one semester of training with their predecessor before taking over the position full time. Below is a description of both positions.

Student Associate Director of Admissions, Recruitment, and RetentionThe SAD of Admissions, Recruitment, and Retention is in charge of most things relating to ‘outside’ of the Global Honors Program. This SAD runs the admissions process for our program; coordinating mailings and the application process, conducting interviews, running open-house presentations, contacting prospective students, overseeing our Admissions Team, acting as the student representative to the Honors Committee, and much more. This SAD is also in charge of planning and running the Freshman Orientation held the weekend before the fall semester begins. They send mailings to incoming honors students throughout the summer and are in constant contact with the students in regards to any concerns they may have. This SAD also helps plan special events and helps the other SADs as needed.

Student Associate Director of Program Development and LeadershipThe Student Associate Director of Program Development and Leadership is in charge of most things relating to ‘inside’ the Global Honors Program. They plan all program-wide events including Public Issues Forums, Speaker Series, Class Meetings, most special events, FDG Wars, etc. This SAD is also in charge of finding and overseeing leaders for all Freshman Development Groups and Activity Groups, including running Freshman Development Group Leadership Training and Activity Group Leadership Training. This SAD sends out weekly program announcements as well as any emergency and last minute announcements. This SAD must be available to help with Freshman Orientation, as they are in charge of placing freshman into their Freshman Development Groups and helping the SAD of Admissions, Recruitment, and Retention with any other tasks needed.

Student Associate Director of Communication and Special EventsThe Student Associate Director of Communication and Special Events is in charge of most things relating to the special opportunities within the Global Honors Program. They plan events such as Honros Olympics, field trips taken by students in the program, and all other special events. This SAD is also in charge of updating the Honors website, writing press releases, sending out weekly Monday Morning Announcements, creating flyers for advertisements both in the Honors House and around campus, updating bulletin boards, creating Graduation certificates for graduating students, and more. This SAD also assists the other SADs with any other tasks necessary.

Non-Paid Positions

Below is a list and description of all non-paid positions within the Global Honors Program.

Records Keeper

The Records Keeper is a vital person in the organization of the Global Honors Program. The Records Keeper’s main duty is to input attendance from all Special Events, Activity Groups, and Freshmen Development Groups into the master spreadsheet. This information goes into whether or not students are retained in the program. The Records Keeper’s duties also include reading all group reports and passing along any important information to the Student Associate Director of Program Development and Leadership and keeping in close contact with the Student Associate Director of Program Development and Leadership. This job requires approximately 2 to 3 hours a week to be spent in the Honors House entering data and communicating with the SAD of PDL. While the position is not paid, the Records Keeper receives community service hours for volunteering their time and is may receive exemption from activity groups. A new Records Keeper is selected when the former volunteer graduates, or must otherwise resign for another reason.

Community Service Liaison

The Community Service Liaison assists the Global Honors Program students with finding opportunities to complete their ten hours of community service. This requires collaboration with the MountainServe Office on campus to determine what events are available on a weekly and monthly basis and any special requirements to participate. On a monthly basis, the liaison notifies the honors program of these opportunities through the Monday Morning Announcements and the community service bulletin board. The liaison is responsible for recording student hours submitted through the online Google form and communicating issues to the Student Associate Director of Program Development and Leadership. The

liaison also meets with the Global Honors Director twice a month to provide updates on student participation and activities. While the position is not paid, the Community Service Liaison receives community service hours for volunteering their time and is may receive exemption from activity groups. A new Community Service Liaison is selected when the former volunteer graduates, or must otherwise resign for another reason.

Occasional Word Newsletter Editor

The Occasional Word (OW) Newsletter Editor is responsible for publishing the special “Freshmen” issue for distribution during orientation week and one to two OW issues per semester. The editor collaborates with the Director and SADs for content ideas and recruits students in the program to write articles on a variety of events that take place each semester. Students who provide articles are part of the “Newsletter Team” and can receive activity group credit for writing an article. Students who study abroad for a semester have the opportunity to write three articles for the OW about their experience. Creative writing pieces are also welcome, such as those submitted to the activity group, Basics in Imaginary Writing (BIW). Pictures from events are also welcome and can be obtained from our Flickr account or the SAD of Communication and Special Events. While the position is not paid, the OW editor receives community service hours for volunteering their time and is may receive exemption from activity groups. A new OW editor is selected when the former volunteer graduates, or must otherwise resign for another reason.

Activity Group Leader

In order to have Activity Groups, we must have Activity Group Leaders. Students are eligible to lead an Activity Group as early as the second semester of their freshman year. Activity Groups can be on just about any appropriate topic you can think of, as long as it actually teaches something or provides some kind of other meaningful benefit to the students of the Global Honors Program. We look for new Activity Group leaders at the end of each semester, and most activity groups are led with a co-leader. If you think you might be interested in leading an activity group, start thinking of an idea now!

Freshmen Development Group Leader

Being a FDG leader is one of the most influential positions within the Global Honors Program. Freshmen Development Group Leading is a chance to enhance relationships with incoming freshmen while developing your own leadership and communication skills. It is a highly respected position among your peers and more importantly, with new students. We encourage everyone, freshmen and upperclassmen alike, to take advantage of this opportunity.

To become an FDG leader, all candidates must go through Freshmen Development Group Leadership Training (FDGLT). FDGLT is a job interview that lasts about two hours per week for 7 weeks. Not only is it a great way for us to judge who will be the best leaders in the future, but it’s one of the greatest learning experiences that you can take part in. I can guarantee you that it will be unlike any leadership training you may have done in the past, so expect the unexpected.

We look for new FDG leaders starting at the end of each fall semester. FDGLT then takes place during the spring semester. Any freshman or sophomore is eligible to apply to be an FDG leader.

Special Teams and Committees

One of the most unique aspects of the Lock Haven University Global Honors Program is that we are almost completely 100% student-led. To accomplish much of this, we have a variety of special teams and committees that work diligently to enhance different aspects of our program. If you are interested in joining any of these special teams, contact their leader for more information.

Admissions TeamA-Team, short for Admissions Team, is in charge with handling all aspects of recruiting for the Global Honors Program. They run open houses, talk to prospective students, give admissions interviews, and prepare mailings to be sent out. A-Team meets once a week to prepare for open houses, train for interviews, and to perform many other tasks. All students may apply to A-Team which is led by Shelby Helwig, the Student Associate Director for Admissions, Recruitment, and Retention.

Public Issues Forum (PIF) Team

The PIF team is in charge of preparing and presenting all material sand information for Public Issues Forums, as well as training moderators for the small group session. They meet weekly to discuss topics, research, make handouts, prepare presentations, and any other tasks that must be completed in order to runt he forum. This team is open to any student who is at least a first-semester sophomore and is led Rachael Metzinger, the Student Associate Director for Program Development and Leadership.

Special Events Committee

Students on the Special Events Committee help plan and execute all of the Special Events run by the Global Honors Program and meets weekly for as long as needed. Students on this committee must be willing to volunteer a lot of time to the planning and execution of events, but will find a lot of fun in doing so! This team is open to sophomore students and above and is filled through an application process – look for this at the end of the spring semester. Thomas Bates, Student Associate Directors for Communication and Special Events, leads this committee.

Newsletter Team

The honors newsletter, titled The Occasional Word, is published two times per semester and contains honors news, student and professor profiles, student works, pictures, and much more. This committee works to help the newsletter editor (and committee leader), Grace Monroe, find and create information for each issue. Work for this committee may also count as Activity Group credit and is often sought online, so make sure to check the Monday Morning Announcements.
