What is Inspiring Technology?• Inspiring Technology is concerned with establishing
a new scientific foundation which integrates humansystem theories with modern technologies todevelop a new generation of products that cansimultaneously inspire human potentials whileachieving their intended functional purposes
• Inspiring Technology is related to, but differentfrom, bio-engineering or bio-technology• It extends western human system theories to include the
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) approaches
• It is an “application-driven” basic research in systemengineering, design methodology, and product development
• Inspiring products are NOT medical treatment devices
• They “inspire” human potentials, not “cure” human diseases
• They are “transparently” embedded in existing products

Some Basic Research Questions
• How do we model the human systems?
• What is the difference between western and oriental models?• What is the scientific foundation of TCM?
• How do we know if, and when, a human is “inspired”?• What is the quantitative definition of “inspiration”?
• How do we quantify different “states” of inspiration?• How do human systems respond to environments?
• What are the basic human/energy interaction mechanisms?
• How do we quantify and measure these interactions?
• How do we design and develop inspiring products?• How to add inspiring functions to existing products
“transparently” and “ubiquitously” ?
• How to “personalize” inspiring functions for different users
and environments?

Some Basics of TCM
• Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)(A)
• An ancient system of medicine and health care that isbased on the concept of balanced qi, or vital energy, that flows throughout the body
• Qi (Chi or chee)
• The Chinese term for vital energy or life force
• Yang• The Chinese concept of positive energy and forces in
the universe and human body
• Yin
• The Chinese concept of negative energy and forces inthe universe and human body
• Only when our “Qi” is clear of distorting emotions canthe "mind/body connection" function effectively toaccelerate recovery from physical problems

Some Basics of Western Medicine
• Duplex communications betweenhuman systems and the environments
• Specialized sense organs receive astimulus which is translated andencoded into our nervous system
• Each of the 5 senses activates aseparate area of the cerebral cortex, the sheet of neurons that makes upouter layer of the brain’s hemispheres
• The stimulus is carried through 3 relaystations that perform primary analysisfor the brain where further processing
and analyzing taken place• Decisions and orders proceed to
nervous pathways which carryinformation to muscles that performand act upon the environments

Inspiring The Human Systems• We take the TCM holistic view toward human systems
• A human is multi-layer “systems within systems”
• Each organ is a system itself, with a map of the whole body
• The most inspired state of a human is achieved when thebody and mind (i.e., whole human system) is fully balancedbetween Yin and Yang
• Affecting the flow of Qi can change the Yin-Yang balance, andhence the states of human inspiration
• Qi flows within human systems is effected by environmentalfactors (e.g., time, date, orientation, location, etc.)
• To inspire human systems is to affect the Qi flows to• keep the human states in balance
• keep the human states from moving away from balance
• Help to return the human states to balance
• Maintain the balance states when environments change

Inspiring The Modern Technologies• Can modern technologies generate and deliver
proper energy sources to inspire human systems?• What types of energy source to emit?
• How do these energies interact with human systems?
• What are resulting effects of interactions in human systems?
• Can modern technologies measure these effects?
• Can modern technology sense environmental changes?
• Can we design these energy emitting and deliveryfunctions into reliable products?• Can these inspiring functions be personalized for individuals?
• Can these functions be adapted to changing environments?
• Can these inspiring functions be made ubiquitous?
• Can these functions be integrated with existing productstransparently?

Existing Products
• Most existing products offer utilities by replacing
specific human functions to achieve conveniences• Functions are performed via fixed human-machine interfaces
• Products become health hazards as functions are repeated
• Human becomes less capable as more functions are replaced
• Matured products need a new paradigm to revive• External, function-specific products have reached their limits
• Products become commodities with rapid price decreases
• Huge investments in production facilities are being wasted
• Future products must simultaneously empower humanpotentials while achieve other functional requirements• Add desired inspiring functions into existing products

TENS
TENS was designed to relieve pain by sending gentle electrical impulses throughthe skin to the nerves. This suppresses pain by blocking the pain signals beforethey reach the brain. TENS sends these gentle impulses through lead wires thatare connected to electrodes. These electrodes are strategically placed atappropriate pain sights on the body.

EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation)
The brain sends a nerve impulseto the "motor point" of muscles. This signal is a message to themuscles to expand and contract.Electrodes are placed over the
motor points of the muscle groupto be exercised. When thestimulation is applied through thepads, the signal finds its way tothese motor points and causes the
muscle to expand and contract. This makes it possible to duplicatea conventional exercise, similar toan isometric exercise.

Galvanic Stimulation
Direct current creates an electrical fieldover the treated area that, theoretically, changes blood flow. Thepositive pad behaves like ice, causing
reduced circulation to the area underthe pad and reduction in swelling. Thenegative pad behaves like heat, causing increased circulation, reportedly speeding healing. The
Galvanic Stimulator (direct current) isthe best modality for iontophoresistreatments.

Sample Products (Electrical)Interferential (INF) Generator
• Interferential current is essentially a deeper form of TENS. It generate higher
frequencies interfere with the transmission of pain messages at the spinal cordlevel. Because of the frequency, the Interferential wave meets low impedancewhen crossing the skin to enter the underlying tissue. This deep tissuepenetration can be adjusted to stimulate parasympathetic nerve fibers forincreased blood flow. Interferential Stimulation differs from TENS because itallows a deeper penetration of the tissue with more comfort (compliance) andincreased circulation.
Microcurrent Electrical Neuromuscular Stimulator (MENS)• Microcurrent, due to its close proximity of our own body’s current, is thought to
work on a more cellular level. It has been theorized that healthy tissue is theresult of the direct flow of electrical current throughout the body. Electricalbalance is disrupted when the body is injured at a particular site, causing theelectrical current to change course. The use of Microcurrent over the injured
site is thought to realign this flow, thus aid in tissue repair. It's been found that ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) in the cell helps to promote protein synthesisand healing. The lack of ATP due to trauma of the tissue results in thedecreased production of sodium and an increase in metabolic wastes, which isperceived as pain. The use of Microcurrent at an injured area helps to realignthe body’s electrical current, increase the production of ATP, resulting inincreased healing and recovery, as well as blocking the pain that is perceived.

Principles of Bio-Magnetic Energy• A cell produces its own energy, called ATP (Adenosine
Triphosphate). This energy is necessary for movement of the
body, building up and breaking down molecules, andtransporting substances across cell membranes. To produceenergy, a cell needs oxygen and about 90 other substances, including enzymes, glucose, and nutrients. Cells also producecarbon dioxide, water, and waste products.
• An electro-magnetic field of correct magnitude and frequencycause reposition of molecular plasma membrane of cells. Thismay influence membrane enzyme system by favorably alteringmolecules in much the same manner as chemical reactions.

Principles of Bio-Thermal Energies
• Heat can expand the section of the vessel andcapillaries which stimulate blood circulation. Thisincreases the bodies energy reserve, transport moreoxygen and accelerates the metabolic exchange
between blood and body tissue.• By using the laser and ultrasound technology, the
microwave can penetrate to the insight tissue andachieve a certain temperature which leads to desired
thermal effect (either coagulation, vaporization, carbonization or melting the tissue).

Acoustic Energies & Human Systems• Acoustic waves cause the eardrum, 3
tiny bones of the middle ear, to vibrate
• The last bone jiggles a flexible layer oftissue at the base of the cochlea
• This pressure sends wave rippling alongthe basilar membrane, stimulatingsome of its hair cells
• These cells then send a rapid-fire codeof electrical signals about frequency, intensity and duration of a sound
• The messages travel through auditorynerve fibers that run from the base of
the hair cells, the center of the cochlea, and from there to the brain
• After several relays within the brain, the messages reach the auditory areasof the cerebral cortex, which processesand interprets these signals as sound

Western Principle of Acoustic Therapy• Acoustic is a kind of vibrated energy
• Response to sound is the physical phenomenon in which
different frequencies of sound stimulate the body to vibrate indifferent areas
• Sound is linked to the physical body by the eighth and tenthcranial nerves, carrying sound impulses through the ear andskull to the brain
• Music can moves through the auditory cortex directly to thecenter of the emotional responses, and can also activatememory flow across the corpus callosum, creating harmonybetween the hemispheres of the brain
• Music can help define our emotions, compose human moods, and evoke imagery. It can be described as a carrier wave forconsciousness.
• Music listening has been demonstrated to help relieve pain andto speed up recovery

TCM Principle of Acoustic Therapy• Music represents the harmonious interaction of
heaven and earth (the Chinese Taoist theory)• It is the resonant of nature, and the basic means of
improving and refining human life
• The harmonious sound is an ideal external supportwhen applying onto human body
• Human body is a holistic unit• Outer part of human body can reflect status of inner organ
• TCM expert can distinguish between 5 sounds of a patient'svoice and 5 musical notes on listening diagnosis
• Illness can arise when inner rhythms are disturbed• Acoustic stimulation can be useful
• Correct the imbalance, harmonize the meridians, uncovermotion and invigorate the body’s energy by offering
acoustic waves with appropriate frequency

Basics of Traditional Chinese Music• Traditional Chinese Music was
composed in the pentatonic scales,
where each mode would span two ormore octaves
• The tones and modes were related tothe Five Elements
• The Five Elements Tonal System
employs concepts from East and West• Today, except for traditional
orchestras, the Chinese play in thediatonic scales
• Pop musicians often use pentatonic
scales in solos with the harmonycontaining chords built from thediatonic scales
• Some chords may even contain tonesoutside the scale

Difference in The Musical Tones
Chinese WestTraditional Chinese Music was composed in the
pentatonic scales, Which are based on the FiveElements; we can call it The Five Elements Tonal
System.
Tone in West is distinguished from A tone to G tone. The
audio tone in west can be calculate based on the law ofoctave, that is, a higher octave’s frequency is twice of the
previous one.

Music Therapy
• It is the enhancement of human capabilities through
planned use of musical influences on brain functions• Music triggers whole brain processes/function which directly
affect cognitive, emotional, and physical functions/abilities
• It is based on the principle of resonance
• The precise harmony contained in this particular musicalstructure resonates inside the organism, from the ears tothe brain and from the brain to the various organs
• The harmony inside the music stimulates the re-setting ofthe biological order to harmonize and regenerate the whole
body, bringing it gradually towards regeneration• It is also an important tool for prevention
• It is considered as harmonic holistic information medicine

Brainwave Entrainment• Our brain produces waves of currents that flow
throughout its neural pathways• Brainwave type is defined by the frequency of pulsing, and
particular rate of pulsation determines the state of mind
• Common brainwave patterns: Delta Alpha, Theta, Beta.
• Brainwave Entrainment uses low frequency waves toentrain brainwave, driving mind to a desired status• When our left ear and right ear hear different, but similar,
frequencies, our brain can distinguish the differencebetween these two coherent frequencies, and generate the
third (low) frequency• This frequency conveys to the neural network, which uses
neurotransmitters to initiate changes in brain-wave activity
• Topographic brainwave maps illustrate the state-changing

The Entrainment Mechanisms
• When two similarly tuned pianos in one room and
and one key is stroked, the stretched chord attachedto the same key on the other piano will vibrate
• Similar to the above phenomena, when the brain's
state (frequency) is stimulated by other closefrequency, it will gradually trend to that frequency
• When sweep from one frequency to another, thestarting frequency should be close to current brain
state. The sweep speed should be gentle enoughthen brain's state can changes steadily with it.

Physiologic Response to Sound
Induction Technology
• Sound frequency stimulation directly into the body isa highly efficient means for the total body stimulation, especially at the cellular level• Human body is over 70% water and sound travels 5 times
more efficiently through water than through air,• Sound frequency pulse waves played directly into the
body also has a profound effect on nervous system• The entire posterior 1/3 of the spinal cord consists of nerve
tract bundles whose sole purpose is the transmission ofvibration sense data to the Brain Stem, Cerebellum, Pons,Medulla, Hypocampus/Limbric System (emotional processingareas) and various areas of the Cerebral Cortex
