Stephen Anderson, of Hobe Sound, earned the 10th seed after posting a 72-74--146 in the stroke play qualifying to advance to match play. In the first round, Anderson defeated Will Peterson, of Orlando, 5 and 3. An-derson then ousted Don Bell, from Port Orange, in the semifinals 3 and 2 to secure his spot in the finals versus Jon Veneziano.

The final match went back and forth many times as Veneziano was 1 up through the first four holes until Anderson birdied the 5th hole to square the match. Veneziano regained the lead after winning the seventh hole, but Anderson won the ninth to square the match heading into the back nine. Anderson then birdied the tenth to go 1 up, with Veneziano winning the eleventh hole to re-square the match. The two would go on to halve holes twelve through eighteen to force extra holes. Anderson would go on to par the nineteenth hole to defeat Veneziano for the Championship. This is Anderson’s second title of the year after winning the Mid-Senior Four-Ball South Championship. It’s cold out, the wind is blowing, your hands are freezing and you need only two putt from twelve feet on the last hole for par to win the club Santa Clause Stroke Play Shoot-Out. Par is OK, but you’d rather go out in style with a birdie.

You’ve had this putt many times before and you’ve made it on several occasions. It’s just outside the right edge and firm up the hill. You carefully replace the ball on the green and line up the trade mark to your intended target. You steady yourself in the wind; a couple of practice strokes finish your routine and you’re ready to go.

The ball starts tracking right on line when suddenly a leaf blown by the gusting wind strikes and deflects your ball slightly left as you watch the ball catch the left edge and lip out. You wanted to finish it up right with a birdie but a par still yields a win.

You go ahead and tap in from a few inches for the par and head to the warmth of the grillroom to return your scorecard, gather up the Santa Clause Stroke Play Shoot-Out trophy and a few congratulatory comments. Maybe even a nip of brandy to warm your insides.

But wait, what really just happened?

Would you believe you just lost the tournament by Disqualification!

Let’s take a closer look. Rule 19 addresses a ball in motion that is accidentally deflected or stopped. Here’s what happened.

1. You made a stroke on the putting green, and 2. Your ball was deflected by a moving outside agency (a leaf that was being moved by the wind (Decision 18-1/6). 3. Rule 19-1b says that in these circumstances, the stroke is cancelled and the ball must be replaced and replayed.

Since you did not replace the ball and instead tapped in from a few inches, you’ve played from a wrong place. The differ-ence of being replaced would have been a repeat putt of twelve feet versus just a few inches. That results in a serious breach of the Rule and the penalty is Disqualification.

Looks like you just got a lump of coal and some sour milk!

Remember, use the definitions, index or the table of contents to find the correct Rule that applies to the situation and follow the Rules of Golf to help yourself to enjoy the game of golf.
