A MEMORABLE 1984 REUNION

The 19B4 Sanborn Family Association Reunion was a resounding success with over 600 descendants of John, William and Stephen Sanborn in attendance. A beautiful, warm and sunny day welcomed the overflow crowd which gathered in Goffstown, NH on Sunday, the 26th of August. Representatives from twenty-six states and two Canadian provinces were there to celebrate the reorganization of our family association, which had been disbanded in the 1940s when wartime gas rationing made travel to the meetings difficult.

Morning arrivals enjoyed donuts and coffee while they signed the guest register and perused the memorabilia and sales tables. Many old family photographs, bibles, silver and interesting artifacts were on display, contributed for the day by family members.

A number of long-lost cousins once again exchanged greetings and memories, while at least one set of brothers met for the first time in decades. Distant relatives compared their family's lines on Sanborn genealogical charts which were offered for sale.

The invocation was given by Sanborn descendant, Rev. Richard S. Appointed positions were: Ellen Sanborn Merriam - Genealogist and Melinde Lutz Sanborn - Newsletter Editor.

During the business meeting, a -Meet Your Cousins- program was led by Arthur B. Sanborn of Candia, RD. state by state, everyone present was asked to stand or wave. Ages and distances were compared and cousins discovered that they were neighbors.

Just before lunch, everyone available adjourned outside to be included in the panoramic picture taken by Aucel stuart'of Manchester, NS. A PAST TO BE PROUD OF

Probably no family is more typical of an early New England colonial family than the sanborns. And similArly, probably no family is more widespread and more a part of the foundation of contemporary North American society than ours. We are all members of a classic colonial family that bas flourished and spread aCross the continent and beyond. The descendants of the three samborne brothers who settled in Hampton, NH in 1638 are found in all walks of life, they have been famous and they have been obscurel they have each in their own way contributed to the social circles in which they moved and to the communities in which they 11 ved. The history of our family is the history of Nortb America and to understand one is to more fully appreciate the other.

What is so special about us? The answer is, nothing. Nothing, that is, unless you think leaving comfortable homes in England, settling in the wilderness of coastal New England and building a community after nearly three months at sea, is an interesting story. Nothing, that is, unless you think the large families, rocky farms, white churches, and picturesque towns of New England ar~ a heritage to be proud of. Nothing, that lS, unless you find our family'S contribution to the westward expansion of settlers across North America and the building of two great nations unequalled in the history of the world a heritage worth appreciating. Nothing. that is, unless you think the part individuals and businesses in our family play in a free SOCiety are worthy of notice and support. And nothing, unless you think that your own family and its future is important and its traditions worthy of telling and retelling. A good understanding of one's family leads to renewed pride in that family's future and the future of one'S community.

PURPOSE OF THE SANBORN FAMILY ASSOCIATION Over the years many individuals have

recognized that a family organization is necessary to not only keep in tOUch with all branches of the family as they grow and spread, but also to systematically research and record our family's past. After two previous attempts, several family members got together in 1983 and lanuched our renewed

family association. The purposes are twofold: 1) to hold annual family reunions to which all sanborn descendants, their families and friends are invited; and, 2) to gather and preserve records of our family, both past and present, for the eventual publication of a revised, complete and up-to-date family genealogy which will preserve the history of our Sanborns in detail for all time.

In conjunction with this, research in England on the origins of Our family is being undertaken to uncover the early history of our people. We urge everyone to COntribute to the fund set up for this English research. We hope that significant new discoveries will be made.

Response to our first reunion, held on August 26, 1984, was very enthusiastic. Over 600 of our interested family members came from allover NOrth America, breaking all records for attendance at a first reunion. Many others sent their best wishes, which is extremely gratifying to those of us who have worked so hard to build this association. With this strong start, we feel confident that our large family will continue to support our effOrts. Please encourage all your relatiVes who are Sanborn descendants to join. Our dues are very low, and all members will receive our newsletter keeping them informed of family doings and progress with our reUnions and research. Ideally, we would like to contact everyone descended from our original Samborne settlers in colonial New Hampshire. He need your involvement.

We are grateful to all who have encouraged us and who have helped. We hope to reach even more of our kin in the future. Please tell your relatives about the association and send us copies of family Bibles, letters and family history information whiCh you /nay have. as well as details about your own family and how you fit into the larger Sanborn family. We will send you forms for that purpose. And plan to come to our 1965 reunion with all your family the weekend before Labor Day. Let us hear from youl George F. Sanborn Jr •• Pres.

The Sanborn Family AssociatiOn, P.O. Box 165, Candia, Nil 0)034

The Sanborn Family Association is a not-forprofit organization composed of persons interested in Sanborns. The family in America begins with the arrival of John, William and Stephen Samborne in Massachusetts circa 1632. six ye"'rs later, the three sambornes went to Hampton, NH in company with their grandfather, the Rev. Stephen Bachiler. John and William remained in Hampton for the rest of their lives, raUing large f",milies of eleven and eight children, respectively. Stephen returned to England with his grandfather Circa 1654 and does not appear to have ever returned to America. It has been proven that he had three daughters and

probably a fourth, but only one of these is known to have married and produced children. Thus, all SanbOrn descendants of these early brothers who bear the name come from John and William. By the third generation there were over 100 Sanborns born in -America. Much later, other Sanborns began to appear. A swedish family with the Same name, as_well as Portuguese, Norwegian and Jewish families arrived in America before the turn of the twentieth century. We also expect that many of our Canadian Sanborns and Sambournes are more recent immigrants. While we suppose that most of our members will be descended from the three English brothers, all Sanborn descendants are welcome.

AN APPEAL FROH TIHSBURY

A very worthwhile cause has been brought to the attention of the Association. We have heard from the Rector of Timsbury in Somersetshire, England, the Reverend Hr. Clifford A. Jones, regarding the vital repairs needed by the parish church. Timsbury was considered by well-known genealogist, V.C. sanborn, to be the English seat of our branch of the sanborn family. The preservation of this church is of great importance to us all.

The following are excerpts from Rev. Jones' letter:

We here in Timsbury have had a long connection with the Sanborn family and it's a great sadness in the village that the beautiful Timsbury Bouse where the family lived has been demolished. It is also regretted that no members of the family now live in the village. The Church, hovever, contains many memorials to the family ... The Sanborne family stained Glass window has been moved to a more central position in the Church .•• it now greets every person who enterS the Church door ... lWeI would be extremely grateful for any support which you as an association could give to the Appeal, or if any of your family would like to give direct personally .... From Timsbury we send greetings to American branch of the Sanborne family and assure any members of your family a warm welcome to our village and ChUrch if you are ever able to visit us.

The Rev. Jones sent a brochure which says in part, "The Samborne family have a long association with the churCh and there are a number of plaques on the walls in commemoration of past members of the family. A Samborne, one Swithunus, appears in the list of incumbents in the porch having served the parish for over 45 years from 1579 to 1625 •••• IThe ChUrch] interior is wellproportioned with slender pillars giving graceful support to an arched roof, and handsome stained-glass windows providing a colourful backcloth to the altar. The tower follows the Norman design and houses a peal of six bells above the ringing

The English Research Fund has been established to elllploy a local researcher to investigate the origins of the Sanborn family in England. Ann Bachiler, daughter of the Rev. Stephen Bachiler, married a Hr. Samborne .... hose first name is not kno .... n. His identity and the connection of this family with the Samborne family of Timsbury will be significant additions to our knowledge about our Sanborn heritage. Ann Bachiler Samborne did not immigrate to America, but remained in England where she married a second time to one Benry Atkinson. Very few additional facts are known about these individuals. lie hope to begin directing a researcher to investigate these problems in late 1985. If you wish to make a contribution to this effort, please send your donation to the Association: Attention: English Research Fund.

, chamber .... (they] were last rung at the beginning of the century.

The old Samborne home in Timsbury had to be demolished. It would be a shame for the parish church to meet the same fate. Repairs are badly needed to the roofs and gutters, the boundary walls, and especially to the non-stained glass windows, which need to be replaced. If the fund drive is successful, not only will the church be preserved, but several small improvements, such as paths and new lighting will be made.

The Restoration Appeal goal is set at the sum of 35,000 pounds and we are very properly being included in this Appeal. To what more worthy cause could we devote a share of our ASSOciation funds? please contribute generously to the Timsbury Fund, which has been set up to help preserve our English heritage. (Checks payable to the Sanborn Family Association.) We would like to make a significant contribution soonl

V. C. SANBORN AND THE OLD SANBORN GENEALOGY

In 1899 the most.complete book yet to appear on the Sanborn' family in North America was privately printed for the author, Victor Channing Sanborn. Thousa~ds upon thousands of Sanborns were included; it was the resul t of at least three serious attempts at publishing the work, each improving on the last, yet it was still sadly incomplete.

There is a long story behind the book which V.C. Sanborn published in 1899. It was begun by a proto-Sanborn group called the ·Sanborn Genealogical Association in 1853. The members had formed their organization for the purpose, among other things, of compiling a family history. The Recording Secretary, Dr. Nathan Sanborn, first published some of the results of this work in 1856 in the NEW ENGLAND BISTORICAL AND GENEALOGICAL REGISTER. It was one of the earliest American genealogies printed, according to V.C. Sanborn, and took up only 19 pages. Bow much simpler the family charts must have been 128 years and 6 or 7 generations agol

Dr. Sanborn died just two years later, in 1858, and his records were placed in the hands of Dyer H. Sanborn, the Association's President. He took on the mammoth work of corresponding with all known Sanborns and learning about each branch of the family. It proved to be too great a task even for this indefatigable worker, who died 13 years later, still with much to be done. The massive store of records was filed away for several decades, until V.C. sanborn resurrected them for the 1899 work.

Both V.C. and his father, Franklin Benjamin Sanborn, were interested in the family history. F.B., a respected author of historical works, published several short pieces on Sanborns before his death. V.C. began his genealogical publishing career at the early age of eighteen, and had numerous works to his credit before his death in 1921. The father of four children, his two sons died in infancy. While be left a sizeable sum of money to the New England Bistoric Genealogical society in his will, he did not bequeath them his records of the family. We do not currently know where these

Sanborn papers are and anyone knowing of their location would be doing the Association a great favor to let tbem know. 'lhese papers are an invaluable record of Sanborn history and deserve to be preserved for use by futUre generations.

V.C. seems to have been more interested in the English Origins of the family tban its American branches, and spent much time combing the British sources for the clue to the three Sanborn brother's heritage. '1'0 this day no one has been able to di8cover the name of John, William and Stephen's father, the first husband of Ann Bachiler. V.C. made the interesting comment that be felt the marriage between Ann Bachiler and __ __ Sanborn had been performed by Ann's father, the Rev. Stephen Bachiler. Be supposed that the record of this marriage might have been destroyed in the fire which took Rev. Bachiler's library in or just following 1645. The record should still have appeared In the register of the church where the marriage was performed, however, and it may be that it sits waiting for us to simply look in the. right place.

V.C. Sanborn had other interesting thoughts about family puzzles, some of which have been proven and others which have had to be set aside. Bis most valuable contribution was in identifying Timabury in Somersetshire as the original seat of our Sanborns. The magnificent manor house there was the home of Sanborns for more than 300 years.

V.C. traced his Sanborn descent from Lt. John Sanborn, the progenitor of more than half the Sanborns who carry the name in this

. country. John's brother, William, had a much smaller family, and the third brother, Stephen, is .!lot known to have had any sons.
