Thursday 28th February 2013 Hadith 23: "...the Quran an argument for you or against you" part 3 Lecture by Sister Eman al Obaid www.alhudasisters.wordpress.com

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah

be upon him) said, “Purity is half of iman (faith).‘Al-

hamdu lillah (praise be to Allah)’ fills the scales, and

‘subhan-Allah (how far is Allah from every

imperfection) and ‘Al-hamdulillah (praise be to

Allah)’ fill that which is between heaven and earth.

And the salah (prayer) is a light, and charity is a

proof, and patience is illumination, and the Qur’an is

a proof either for you or against you. Every person

starts his day as a vendor of his soul, either freeing it

or causing its ruin.” It was related by Muslim.

and the Qur’an is a proof either for you or against you

Allah subhana wa ta'ala sent the Qur’an to guide us in this life. Allah subhana wa ta'ala wants the human being to go back to Paradise. From this life, from this dunya how will the human being go back to Paradise which is above the seventh heaven? They need to follow the divine rules. Rules that are not from their own thinking but rules which are from Allah subhana wa ta'ala, so Allah subhana wa ta'ala sent messengers. Messengers will not remain forever but from the messengers you have something which is ever lasting, your manual – Qur’an al Kareem. You need to base your life on the Qur’an al Kareem and what is in the Qur’an al Kareem. Your salvation is when you follow the Qur’an, your success is when you follow the Qur’an.

You have rights towards the Qur’an. The Quran has rights upon you even though you need to take the Quran with nothing, with no conditions.

When will the rights of the Qur’an be shown to you? On the Day of Judgment the Qur’an will intercede for you or the Qur’an will be against you.

Al Ilm – the Quran will be for you if you know about the Qur’an. The Qur’an will be against you if you don’t know about the Qur’an.

Memorize the Quran in the Heart - the Quran will be for you. The Qur’an will be against you if you reject the Qur’an.

Recite the Quran – the Qur’an will be for you. If you don’t read the Qur’an the Qur’an will be against you.

Read, reflect and understand the Qur’an – when you ponder upon the Qur’an it will be for you. The Qur’an will be against you when you recite without any reflection, without pondering upon the Qur’an.

All of the above and what follows is required, you can’t pick and choose.

The Qur’an will be with you if you

Ponder Upon the Qur’an Pondering is more than understanding. When you read the Qur’an, when understand the Qur’an you need the Qur’an to change you as a person.

Tafsir al Qur’an You know what the ayah means but how does it affect you – Taddabur al Qur’an. How will this ayah change how my heart feels? You see what people did and you know you shouldn’t do as they did – this should increase your faith. When the Qur’an mentions the Day of Judgment you should believe more in the Day of Judgment. You ask yourself questions and you interact with the Qur’an. Everyone’s reflection is different according to how much they understand but the source will be the same. Allah subhana wa ta'ala revealed the Qur’an for you to ponder upon the Qur’an.

Chapter (38) sūrat ṣād 38:29 [This is] a blessed Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that they might reflect upon its verses and that those of understanding would be reminded.

This book. Deal with Qur’an as if it is revealed to you personally. blessed. Don’t you want the blessing? You can get the blessing from this ‘kitaabun mubaarak’. According to how much you include the Qur’an in your life you will get the blessing. The blessing of the Qur’an is not keeping it in a draw or hanging it around your

neck etc.

that they may ponder. Everything which is good is found in the Qur’an. Dabbur means behind, you will go behind the ayah to see what is the consequence.

How will the Qur’an help me? Allah subhana wa ta'ala will respond to you. Don’t rely on yourself, rely on Allah subhana wa ta'ala and the response will come. This can only happen when you repeat and repeat the ayat and ‘ask yourself’. Allah subhana wa ta'ala is the All Knower so the Qur’an reforms you from the inside, not just on the surface. Reforming you when you really go into the Qur’an.

The Qur’an should reform your aqeedah The Qur’an should change your behavior The Qur’an should change your worship

Be Thirsty for the Qur’an When you go over an ayah again don’t think of it as repetition. When you behave like this Allah subhana wa ta'ala will not open for you the secrets of the Qur’an. Each time you read an ayah again with the feeling that ‘I want to learn, I want my faith to increase’ Allah subhana wa ta'ala will open for you more secrets of Qur’an. Don’t deal with the Qur’an as if I know it. With the Qur’an you should feel that you are always in need, thirsty. Give the Qur’an Your Whole Self The Qur’an will not give you it’s core/ sense of the Qur’an until you give the Qur’an your whole self then the Qur’an will give you some of its secrets. Deal with every ayah as if it new, be excited like when you get something new, not just for your spare time, all your thinking should be about the Qur’an. Those of understanding will be reminded. They will deal the Qur’an as if something new.

The Qur’an will be against you if you leave the Tadabbur

The shaytan will tell you ‘the tadabbur is not for you, this is for the scholar, you can’t do taddabur of the Qur’an’.

If you are open and sincere Allah subhana wa ta'ala will make you to reflect and understand – you need tawakkul and istianah billah. If you want and have the will Allah subhana wa ta'ala will make it easy. If you left the Taddabur: Chapter (47) sūrat muḥammad 47:24 Then do they not reflect upon the Qur'an, or are there locks upon [their] hearts? A Lock on Your Heart Someone not making tadabbur of the Qur’an, it is as if there is a lock on their heart, their heart is paralyzed. You need to prepare when you read the Qur’an. When you read the Qur’an you need to open the heart, remove all the distractions. One of the distractions is to think about the dunya. Just like you need khushoo in the salat it is the same for the Qur’an.

The Qur’an will be with you if you Listen to the Qur’an

To benefit from the Qur’an all your limbs need to benefit from the Qur’an;

Your eyes Your ears Your tongue

Your heart should benefit when you recite, when you read, when you listen. When you recite loudly you hear as well. Also when somebody else recites the Qur’an this can have a great effect – you feel it more when someone else recites the Qur’an. Allah subhana wa ta'ala revealed the Qur’an to Prophet Muhammad sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam through Jibril alaihi as-salaam. Prophet Muhammad sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam was the first human to hear the Qur’an but Prophet Muhammad sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam still loved to hear the Qur’an from somebody else. Once Prophet Muhammad sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam heard one of the sahabah reciting the Qur’an. Prophet Muhammad sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam thought it was a very beautiful recitation. Prophet Muhammad sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam stood and continued to listen. In the morning Prophet Muhammad sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam told the sahabah ‘Allah gave you one of the flutes of Dawud’. The sahabah said ‘I did not know you came otherwise I would have made it even more beautiful’. When Prophet Muhammad sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam passed away everyone read an ayah from the Qur’an; Chapter (3) sūrat āl ʿim'rān (The Family of Imrān) 3:144 Muhammad is not but a messenger. [Other] messengers have passed on before him. So if he was to die or be killed, would you turn back on your heels [to unbelief]? This ayah was revealed before the death of Prophet Muhammad sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. Everyone knew this ayah. When Umar radi-Allahu anha heard that Prophet Muhammad sallallahu ‘alayhi wa

sallam had died he couldn’t accept it then Abu Bakr radi-Allahu anha recited this ayah. When you bring the ayat to the sahabah they don’t argue. When you remind them they remember. Ayat ul Qur’an have Value The Kalam has barakah – when you include Ayat ul Qur’an in a lecture you will remember. When you have Ayat ul Qur’an it has value. Without Ayat ul Qur’an there is no value. Kalam al nafs you will forget and has no value. This is the effect when you hear the Qur’an. One ayah can make someone repent. Listen Attentively Don’t play the Qur’an in the background. If there is a Qur’an being recited you need to; Chapter (7) sūrat l-aʿrāf (The Heights) 7:204 So when the Qur'an is recited, then listen to it and pay attention that you may receive mercy. This is Kalamullah so don’t play it in the background, it is better not to play the Qur’an at all. Listen carefully to the Qur’an, attentively and don’t speak. Respect the Kalamullah. There is no effect of the Qur’an when we don’t give the Qur’an it’s rights. Allah subhana wa ta'ala promised you a special mercy when you listen attentively. Allah subhana wa ta'ala will shower you with knowledge, the Qur’an is from Allah subhana wa ta'ala’s hikmah, a provision for the afterlife, Allah subhana wa ta'ala will send you the blessings, Allah subhana wa ta'ala will make it easy for you on the Day of Judgment and Allah subhana wa ta'ala will admit you into Paradise. People go to Paradise because of the rahma. Just listen attentively without saying anything. Imagine, if you ponder, if you listen and understand - don’t say it is not in my language, Allah subhana wa ta'ala will make it easy for you. When you listen you have more of a reaction. Listen first to memorize.

The Qur’an will be against you if you don’t listen to the Qur’an Attentively

Chapter (45) sūrat l-jāthiyah (Crouching) 45:8 Who hears the verses of Allah recited to him, then persists arrogantly as if he had not heard them. So give him tidings of a painful punishment.

He is not listening carefully is as if he is not listening. Listening to the Qur’an means listening attentively.

The Qur’an will be with you if you Act Upon Qur’an

I need to: Listen to the Qur’an Understand the Qur’an Memorize with the heart Ponder upon the Qur’an Act upon the Qur’an Actions – output - the amal.

The output is in the heart, when your heart moves. How should I act when I see:

1:1 [All] praise is [due] to Allah , Lord of the worlds -

Allah subhana wa ta'ala deserves all the praises, why? Huwa Rabbil Alameen. This is the information. The more you reflect, the heart will move towards this ayah. The heart should be full of gratitude, you don’t know how to thank Allah subhana wa ta'ala, you are so grateful to Allah subhana wa ta'ala. When you see the word Paradise – you read and understand and wonder how is Paradise. Action – hope for what Allah subhana wa ta'ala will give you, you want to go there, you don’t want to be deprived from Paradise. What will you do in order to go to Paradise? You will pray etc. do some actions from your reflections. The reaction of the believer; Chapter (17) sūrat l-isrā (The Night Journey) 17:107 Say, "Believe in it or do not believe. Indeed, those who were given knowledge before it - when it is recited to them, they fall upon their faces in prostration, 17:108 And they say, "Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, the promise of our Lord has been fulfilled." Every ayah should:

- Increase you faith - Increase your tawakkul - Increase your istia’nah - Increase your love - Increase your remembrance of Allah subhana wa ta'ala.

All the actions should increase. You are pouring with good deeds. The more you input, the output will be more. The ayat will make you humble and magnify Allah subhana wa ta'ala – as if you are pouring in prostration. Hadith: the Qur’an will be brought in front of you on Yawm ul Qiyamah. Every ayah will be like a picture for you or against you. The people of the Qur’an will also come at this time, the ones acting upon the Qur’an. If you act upon ten ayat, these ten ayat will come with you. If you act on one surah, this one surah comes with you. We need so many witnesses on the Day of Judgment and the Qur’an will intercede for you. Al-HamduliLlah if you act upon the Qur’an the Qur’an will intercede for you.

Page 7: An Nawai Forty Hadith - WordPress.com

An Nawai Forty Hadith

7

Surah al Baqarah & Surah Al Imran Someone who acted upon two sur’ah’s of the Qur’an will be on a platform – they will be honored. Those who acted upon Surah Al Baqarah and Al Imran will be honored and placed higher. One who acted upon these two surah’s – they memorized, they were reading, they were reciting, they were understanding, they were listening, they were pondering. These two surah’s will intercede for the reciter, coming as birds (cloud-like) for the one who recited, memorized, and acted upon them.

The Qur’an will be Against you for not

Acting upon the Qur’an There is a barrier between you and the Qur’an. Don’t use the Qur’an as information to get the grade or get a certificate. Take the Qur’an as something that will save you on the Day of Judgment. You need to act upon the Qur’an and it will intercede for you.

Chapter (62) sūrat l-jumuʿah (Friday) 62:5 The example of those who were entrusted with the Torah and then did not take it on is like that of a donkey who carries volumes [of books]. Wretched is the example of the people who deny the signs of Allah. And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people. Carrying the Qur’an is not just carrying the Qur’an in the heart and the mind without acting upon the Qur’an. A person who memorizes the Qur’an and knows the tafsir but does not act upon the Qur’an it will be a burden. When you act upon the Qur’an you will never forget. May Allah subhana wa ta'ala make us true carriers of the Qur’an.

1. Know about the Qur’an 2. Memorize the Qur’an in the heart 3. Recite the Qur’an 4. Understand the Qur’an 5. Ponder upon the Qur’an 6. Listen to the Qur’an 7. Act upon the Qur’an

The Qur’an will be with you if you Teach the Qur’an

What you learn, don’t keep it only with you, share it. Share it with your children. Don’t rely on somebody else to teach your children except you. If there is somebody else Al HamduliLlah but mainly it will be up to you. Pass on the knowledge. If you have no one to pass on the knowledge to talk to yourself.

Spread the message with a message, by email etc. if we are truthful Allah subhana wa ta'ala will make us to use our knowledge. Chapter (3) sūrat āl ʿim'rān (The Family of Imrān) 3:79 It is not for a human [prophet] that Allah should give him the Scripture and authority and prophethood and then he would say to the people, "Be servants to me rather than Allah," but [instead, he would say], "Be pious scholars of the Lord because of what you have taught of the Scripture and because of what you have studied." Don’t use the knowledge to make people your slave. Don’t be a slave of so and so because they have knowledge. Be a Slave of Allah. Do you teach for your sake or for Allah’s Sake. We will be lost in the dunya when we do two things:

- when you do things for yourself - when you do things for the sake of the people

You should do for the Sake of Allah. Hadith: the best among you is one who has memorized the Qur’an and teaches the Qur’an. When you learn make this a means to teach somebody. If you are sincere Allah subhana wa ta'ala will give you the means. You not only want to save yourself you want to save others.

The Qur’an will be Against you when I have Knowledge but I Don’t Teach the People. Maybe because of some desire you teach others. Especially with the Qur’an we want to pass it on. We need to be afraid that on the Day of Judgment someone close to you will say ‘Why didn’t you teach me? You went to classes, you learnt and you didn’t teach me.’

Page 9: An Nawai Forty Hadith - WordPress.com

Chapter (2) sūrat l-baqarah (The Cow)

2:159 Indeed, those who conceal what We sent down of clear proofs and guidance after We made it clear for the people in the Scripture - those are cursed by Allah and cursed by those who curse, When you teach, it should go to somebody else. Even if you die somebody may carry this advice all their life and it will be hasanat for you. If they pass it on you will also take the hasanat.

The Qur’an will be with you Believe in the Whole Qur’an Believing in the whole Qur’an is not picking and choosing what you like from the Qur’an. This does not mean reading the whole Qur’an before you die. This means without knowing what is next you believe in all of the Qur’an.

I believe all the Qur’an is wisdom I believe all the Qur’an is from Allah There is no contradiction The Qur’an is for the whole of humanity The Qur’an is all for the best The Qur’an is our guidance

Chapter (3) sūrat āl ʿim'rān (The Family of Imrān)

3:119 Here you are loving them but they are not loving you, while you believe in the Scripture - all of it. And when they meet you, they say, "We believe." But when they are alone, they bite their fingertips at you in rage. Say, "Die in your rage. Indeed, Allah is Knowing of that within the breasts."

Page 10: An Nawai Forty Hadith - WordPress.com

An Nawai Forty Hadith

The Qur’an will be Against you if you Reject the Qur’an A person rejecting one ayah of the Qur’an, it is as if they disbelieve in Allah subhana wa ta'ala. One ayah you reject, one ayah you disbelieve in, it is as if they disbelieve in Allah subhana wa ta'ala. Don’t cross the border, if you don’t like an ayah it does not mean it is not correct. Chapter (2) sūrat l-baqarah (The Cow) 2:85 Then, you are those [same ones who are] killing one another and evicting a party of your people from their homes, cooperating against them in sin and aggression. And if they come to you as captives, you ransom them, although their eviction was forbidden to you. So do you believe in part of the Scripture and disbelieve in part? Then what is the recompense for those who do that among you except disgrace in worldly life; and on the Day of Resurrection they will be sent back to the severest of punishment. And Allah is not unaware of what you do.

The Qur’an will be with you when you are Reminded of the Qur’an New information will not increase your faith, repetition will increase your faith. When you are reminded of an ayah, it is Allah subhana wa ta'ala who is reminding you i.e. about Ikhlas. The more you take it seriously you will benefit and Allah subhana wa ta'ala will open for you more and more of the Qur’an. Deal with everything as new. When you come to an ayah again don’t think of it as repetition, you need to be reminded more. You benefit from the Qur’an with reminders, not with new or fresh information. Repetition increases your faith. Chapter (69) sūrat l-ḥāqah (The Inevitable)

69:48 And indeed, the Qur'an is a reminder for the righteous.

The Mutaqeen, if they will be reminded of the Qur’an, the Qur’an will be a reminder for them. If someone is reminded and they are not taking this reminder then they are not among the Mutaqeen. If you want to be among the Mutaqeen take a reminder from each and every verse even if it comes from different people.

Page 11: An Nawai Forty Hadith - WordPress.com

An Nawai Forty Hadith

11

The Mutaqeen, if a small child came to them with an ayah which they had heard before they were born, they will take it as a reminder. This is Kalamullah, you are repeating the Kalam. Allah subhana wa ta'ala sent that person to tell you which means there is a wisdom. One scholar said that when a new student comes to them they will be very excited about the knowledge they will acquire. The student will tell the scholar about a hadith and the scholar said he would listen as if it was the first time he was listening to this hadith. The scholar knows that this is a reminder from Allah subhana wa ta'ala to him. The scholar said he knew this hadith before he was born. Never underestimate any advice from anybody, especially the Qur’an. Now the opposite.

The Qur’an wil be Against you if Someone reminds you of an ayat and you did not take it seriously. Chapter (17) sūrat l-isrā (The Night Journey)

17:41 And We have certainly diversified [the contents] in this Qur'an that mankind may be reminded, but it does not increase the disbelievers except in aversion. If you listen to the Qur’an happily Allah subhana wa ta'ala will show you, Allah subhana wa ta'ala will accommodate you with His mercy. But if you take it as repetition or as if you don’t need it, Allah is Self Sufficient, Allah is the Most Rich.
