An International Forum for the Littoral Sciences The JCR comprehensive indexes on CD are useful research tools as they facilitate rapid retrieval of information such as author names, geographic locations, scientific names, and specific subject matter. Each volume of the JCR is indexed by contributing authors, geographic place names, and subject. Systematic indexes are sometimes provided separately if the papers in a volume- year contain numerous scientific names, otherwise the systematic index is incorporated into the subject index. Access to most special issues can be achieved by using the CD. In some cases, papers in entire special issues are included on the CD as, for example, SI 26 Part II.Some issues are now out of print and they are included in their entirety on the CD for ease of reference. Save time conducting literature searches. It is sometimes convenient, for example, to list all papers appearing in the JCR by one author or to find all references to specific queries such as beach erosion, beach nourishment, or shoreline. An example of how data can be summarized using the JCR comprehensive index may be found in Finkl, C.W., 2002. Long-term trends in shore protection based on papers appearing in the Journal of Coastal Research, 1984-2000. JCR, 18(2),211-224. CharlesW.Finkl,Editor-in-Chief Journal of Coastal Research The Journal of Coastal Research compiled index is still available in CD format. We plan to have CD updates every quarter as the Journals are published. Beautifully crafted in Red and Blue with Gold lettering.

Fergus J. Wood has left a legacy as a world famous expert on tides and tidal dynamics. He liked to describe

himself as an "astra-geophysicist", linking the lunar tide cycles with the Sun and planetary periodicities as

done by Otto Petterson some ninety years ago.You will want to have both of these wonderful informative

volumes in your library.

The Coastal Education and Research Foundation jeERFj is anonprofit corporation dedicated to the advancement of the coastalsciences. The Foundation is devoted to the mu lt.i-d isr-ipl i na rystudy of the complex problo ms of the coastal zone. The purposeof CERF is to help translate and interpret coastal issues for thepublic and to assist professional research and public informationprogrum s. The Foundation specifically supports and ccouragcsfield and laboratory studies on a local, national, and international basis. Through the med i u m of scientific publications. television. and radio CIERF brings accurate infonnation to the publicand coastal specialists on all aspects of coastal issues in an effortto m a i nt.a i n or i m p rov e the quality of shoreline r esnu rces.

Because CERF is concerned with broad envi ronm cutat issues, our efforts concentrate on significant problems such as m a in ten ance of good quality (potable) water with adequate supply, andhazards associated wi th potential beach erosion, flooding. andsusceptibility of developed shorelines to storrn surge and waveattack. By focusing at te nt.io n on these pot.cnt.ia l man-made andnatural hazards, it is hoped that our research efforts w i l l helpothers improve the quality of life in diverse coastal areas. CERFthus aims to st imu lat.e awareness of coastal (lnarine and freshwater shorelines) land and water problems: initiate and fosterresearch and innovation to promote long-term coastal productivity: establish an educational fo ru m for the debate of contentiouscoastal issues: and develop new principles and approaches forenlightened coast.al rua nageuie nt., and encourage their adoptionand use.

CERF is associated with the Depart ment of Geography andGeology at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida~)3431. This association provides a basis for cooperative invest.igabon of biophysical resources found in open and naturallyprotected coastal regions. estuaries, large inland bodies ofwater bounded by shorelines. w et.Iands. and other coastal environ me n ts. Joint investigative efforts by faculty, students. andstaff at various institutions span a wide and diversified range ofinterrelated topics that are relevant to solutions of t odav's dyn amic p roblem s. It is hoped that these combi n ed attempts tobetter understand the nat u re of coastal processes wi ll helpforestall what rnav become contentious issues of t0l1l01TO\V.
