Sir Robert Dowling welcomes you to St George’s School, Edgbaston

A good education lays the foundation for a successful life. Because St George’s is small andcaring, staff and students are close; we know each other well and we understand how toensure every student is secure enough to walk a step or two with genius.

Co-educational from 3 to 18 years, we unite mixed abilities and cultural diversity whilst recognisingthe importance of individuality on the journey towards adult life. We also believe childhood should beenjoyed, as the confidence gained at this time and the memories of friendships forged, will lastforever.

We are proud of our informal yet hard-working atmosphere which is intrinsic to our school.

Our aim is that students will leave our school fully prepared for the busy, modern and challengingworld that awaits them. We will strive to ensure they take with them the necessary skills to help themon their journey through life.

Do come and visit. You will meet many contented students who feel relaxed in our family atmospherewhich allows them to be the best they can be. A warm welcome is guaranteed.

A zest for life bursts out of the Lower Schoolwhere our smaller pupils thrive in theatmosphere of praise and sensitive guidance.

Dedicated to the education of children up toYear 6, we recognise the vital importance of

learning for children in these formative years.Small classes and a family atmosphere create an

environment where children feel comfortable and takepride in their achievements. The emphasis on developing literacy andnumeracy skills permeates all learning.

We encourage a wide range of artistic, theatrical and musical studies.

The Upper School

Our aim is the very best GCSE and A-Level grades possible for each pupil. All lessons aretaught in specialist teaching facilities and according to need, academically and socially.A faculty structure ensures cohesion between departments.

In the Upper School we provide specialist teaching facilities in all subject disciplines, fromYears 7 to 11. Whilst broadly following the national Curriculum, most academic, creative andexpressive subjects are taught in groups according to need.

A second language is introduced in Year 8, for some students. In Years 8 and 9 students benefit from an option programmeto help them make informed choices on which subjects at GCSE to study in Years 10 and 11.

Work experience is organised for Year 10 to provide students with a flavour of the world ofbusiness and commerce.

“There’s always something different and interesting going on at school.” James, Year 7

“I came up from the Lower School and really feel part of the family at St George’s. It’s a lovely, friendly atmosphere.” Elena, Year 10

Life in the Sixth Form

Our Sixth Formers are allowed to be ‘big fish in a small pool’ andare expected to take on responsibilities, becoming leaders inupholding our school ethos. It is no accident that our Sixth Formbuilding is at the centre of our campus.

Sixth Formers lead Assemblies, help entertain at Parents’ Eveningsand other public functions, assist in the running of our tuck shop andprovide an ear for younger pupils.

Academically and vocationally a wide range of subjects is offered atAS and A-Level, the options being regularly reviewed to provide theflexibility that meets our students’ needs.

Tackling challenges is central to our pursuit of new ideas andexperiences, aiding preparation for university and work. Manystudents gain their Prue Leith Cookery Diploma and their Duke ofEdinburgh Award, while fund raising and voluntary work flourishes.

Recently one of our Sixth Formers was awarded the Knights of St Columba trophy for the Best Individual Performance in a Birmingham School’s production – her involvement in our school play was her first endeavour at ‘treading the boards’.

“It’s hard work but fun and enjoyable in the Sixth Form. We’re taught by teachers whoreally care about their subjects.” Bridgit, Upper Sixth

St George’s offers students the chance to take part in a widerange of sports, including football, basketball, cricket, tennis, athletics, netball and swimming.

Education for Life

At St George’s we believe it important to offer an extensive range of activities and interests to tempt pupils toinvestigate their wider world. A fevered collection of over 1500 plastic pop bottles has led to the creation of a new-worldgreenhouse and a Bronze Award in the International Eco Schools scheme – more importantly we may have producedenvironmentalists or architects of the future.

A host of activities are on offer including ballet, chess, dance, Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, E-news, instrumentallessons, plays, science club, singing and speech and drama to name but a few. It is not unusual to find a

school show stage- managed or costumed by pupils with parents providing further willing expertise.

Thought for others in need of help is embraced. Our Big Birthday Book Bash saw children at theschool read all 7,000 books in the school library, which helped raise almost £3,000 for AcornsChildren’s Hospice.

Other charities such as Comic Relief, LEPRA, the British Legion poppy appeal and MacmillanCancer Support are equally well supported through ingenious fund raising expected of all our

pupils.

Life at St George’s is never dull and students are continually inspiredby what they learn inside and outside the classroom.

It was formed from the merger of Edgbaston Churchof England College for Girls and Edgbaston College - both schools had enjoyed over 100 years of education intheir own right.

The school is situated on the Calthorpe Estate and is set within extensive landscaped grounds, with the originalGeorgian building housing the Upper School.

The school enjoys the convenience of close proximity to Birmingham city centre, whilst nestling within the rurallocation of leafy Edgbaston.
