Background Fresenius Kabi Nursing Service provides community nursing support for patients receiving enteral, parenteral nutrition and other intravenous therapies nationally. Fresenius Kabi employs over 300 nurses divided into 5 geographical Clinical Directorates and is supported through a defined management, training and Clinical Governance structure. Aims and Introduction The Nursing Service recognised that there was a need to support the Clinical Governance (CG) strategy and to raise the profile out in the field. This was to demonstrate quality improvement by enhancing both patient and nurse safety, alongside nursing practice. As the nursing team expanded there was a need to aid the communication of key Clinical Governance topics and disseminate key learnings. Methodology Clinical Governance (CG) Champions were identified nationally, seven in total, with all directorates represented. This was a development opportunity for nurses within the team, with dedicated time of one day per month. The team were selected following an email application process asking them to summarise: Discussion and Conclusion Impact on practice : Improved strategic focus of CG Profile of CG raised within the service Lessons Learned document embedded within the nurse team Individual development/promotions for nurse champions As a result of the success of this model, a specific Champion Role Criteria was developed providing a foundation to develop a significant number of other champion roles. Role Profile Clinical Governance Champions Results A requirement for a tool to ensure learnings from clinical incidents was identified. “Lessons Learned” was developed as a monthly document by the Champions and is distributed to the nurse team.
