    LARGE PLAQUE.

    Persian siliceous glazed pottery. Paste fine-textured, witha soft semi-translucent white ground. The decoration includescobalt-blue and manganese (lilac tint) painting under a perfect glazing.

    The panel displays a floral motif, together with a crane,and is framed by an inner border of narrow fret and foliage forming an octagon.

    The outer border shows arabesque foliage and stemsin blue, together with large ftowering blo880ms in a manganese (lilac) tone. It a reverse side is glazed in pale clairde lume, a monochlome colour of even quality.This interesting example may be ascribed to the

    LO W J A R. Globular shape.Persian silict:Ous glazed pottery. Paste massive, close-tex

    tured and well baked; showing a pale white ground of semitranslucency, decorated in dark cobalt blue, with dark brownoutlines under the mellowed siliceous glaze.

    The painting comprises a series of foliated and verticalpanels, invested with scaled diaper forms and flower motifsalternately. The shoulders and neck display separate bor-

    ders in diapered leafage designs. .The glazed surface and body have darkened from great

    age and usage ; or probably was caused by being underground for a considerable period. . Attributed to the

    WAT E R VASE (Narghil i). Low, globular shape,with raised nozzle, and chased metal neck mounting.Persian siliceous glazed pottery. Paste hard-textured and

    well baked; presenting a soft, semi-translucent white surfacewhich has turned to a mellow brownish tone from age and usage.

    The dark cobalt -blue decoration shows green-tingedoutlines under the heavy vitreous glazing, and includes ascrolled and flowered motif over the main surface. Th eshoulder carries a floral-brocaded border, together with a

    LARGE BOWL. Deep shape.Persian siliceous glazed pottery. Paste fine and thin, with

    translucent white body; sustaining a brilliant cobalt blue decoration under a perfect glazing.

    The exterior presents a series of six panels, with treesand rocks, which are vigorously rendered in deep shades ofpellucid cobalt. The narrow vertical sections between thesepanels are simply finished with dots and squares.

    The interior shows a similar bordering of panels, withrocks and trees, and the centre medallion includes a bird.The outer edge is in small alternating ogee.

    The painting presents an octagonal-shaped inner border, with ftoral and fretted detail, enclosing a series offree ftowering blossoms with rurved stems, surrounding thecentral foliated rosette. Th e outer border is composed torepresent some ideal garden spot, ftowering plants and longstreaked cloud forms finish the symbol motive. Its reverse side is simply decorated with ftoral sprays in blue.A notable example of the XVIIth century.

    LARGE JAR. Ovoid shape.Persian siliceous glazed pot tery. Massive paste of dense

    quality an d dark colour, covered with a deep semi-translucentand mellowed white body glazing, that shows a brownish unetuous texture from age and usage.

    A vigorously freely rendered landscape, with templesand bridges in cobalt blue, is presented, under the heavyvitreous glazing, ending near the base, which is in browntoned biscuit (unglazed), as is the foot.

    This interesting example has some evidence _of a formeruse for oils, and probably also was under the earth fo r along period. Ascribable to the XVIth century.

    Persian siliceous glazed pottery. Paste dense and massive,showing a semi-translucent white ground colour and crackleglaze.

    Th e quasi-archaic decoration is outlined in (grilaille)dark gray, and filled in with cobalt blue O t U cou:oerte.

    The design consists in the main of bordering, includingthe lower section, which depicts lions, deer and smaller animals. Th e neck sustains a curious and more archaic ren-

    ing. Th e base, being but partly covered by the runningsiliceous glaz ing, shows the biscuit body darkened from age.

    Th e painting comprehends blue bordering, with petaland leaf age brocading in lighter blue, including also awhite reserved " zigzagged " ribbon motif (o r chevronedbelting), bearing old Persian (Pahlavic) inscriptions insoft-toned black outline. Th e bulbous bordering at neckis decorated with simple floral buds, and the lower sectionshows a blended white glaze running into masses at thefoot in vitreous celadon quality.Rare old Persian form, ascribable to the

    The panel is centred by a flowered rosette and freelydispersed foliage. Th e border shows floral arabesques in informal rendering; outlined in soft-toned black and touchedover with cobalt blue.

    The reverse border is decorated with simple floral andpetal forms in blue, and the foot bears a mark in the samecolour. Ascribable to the

    The main surface of body and neck shows a delicatelyrendered cobalt blue r i n c e ~motif, interspersed with smallblossoms in rich sapphire blue. The shoulder is bordered bya conventional foliated leafage in light turquoise against thedeep sapphire ground, and two similar borders finish thelower section and 6ange of base.

    LARGE PLAQUE.Persian siliceous g1azed pottery. Paste soft-textured and

    bufF-toned. This massive example of Oriental faience is coatedwith a thin stratum of white composition ( plumbeous and argillaceous), upon which the coloured decoration is applied, andshown brilliantly under the (siliceous) glazing.

    The exceptional colour motif is dominated by trans

    parent sapphire-blue and emerald-green pigments, relievedand in combination with light manganese purple.In detail the design comprehends a central medallion

    enclosing a star-petalled blossom or rosette with spiral(haianthe) foliations, and in blue outline on a greenhatched ground.

    An inner border is formed by a circle of ornamentalleafage, picked out in deep blue and outlined in manganese purple against the scalloped white reserve and greenarched 6lling. A band of scrolling tendrils forms the sec-ond border in white reserve and against a blue ground.The outer border is finished with green interlacing involvin g small white reserved blossoms and other motifs.

    The intervening section shows a series of eight ovalpanels, with geometrical diapering and fret work alternately in green and light purple or blue.

    It s reverse side is in monochrome turquoise glazing ofvitreous texture.

    A felicitous model of technical perfection and rarecombination of coloured glazes. Ascribable to the

    VASE. Ovoid shape.Persian siliceous glazed pottery. Pas te massive and red-

    coloured, thinly coated with a silico-plumbeous substance,showing both a transparent and lustrous quality in the vitreous blue-green glazing, an iridescence due in part to the second and final coating of the siliceous glaze, slightly colouredby an admixture of metallic oxides ( oopper, etc.) .

    Th e felicitous embellishment which is under the finalcoat of glazing presents beautiful scrolled foliage andarabesque motifs, including borders, in the most delicatewhite " slip " enamel painting, the efFect heightened bythe (so pro azzuro) touches of brilliant sapphire-blue orrehau11emmt bleu.An exceptional example, combining delicacy and brilliancy

    with technical skill.A unique and rare type, and ascribable to an early period.

    Th e decoration is typical and uniformly covers theentire surface, showing palmette and floral fonns, togetherwith spiral interlacing and foliation outlined in soft black,and filled in with various enamel colours under the siliceous

    A typical motif, which covers the entire surface uni-formly, shows an interlacing of foliated and spiral forms,together with palmette panels involving " fish-scale " andother diapering, alternately painted in green or blue, withthe tracery of' design in soft black l o t U cooloerte.

    The upper rim and base are equally finished w i ~ habordering. Th e foot shows dark-brown bisque from !logeand usage.This characteristic example is ascribable to the

    Th e painting comprehends a series of narrow verticaldivisions, enclosing floral stripes and feathered forms alternately, together with a small rim bordering, all executedin coloured pigments IOtU cou:oerte, analogues with the oldware of Lindus.

    Th e painting consists of a series of small vertical divisions outlined in black and green, enclosing alternately 1loralplants and simple dashes in black and green.

    The rim shows a chevroned band, and the glazed footbears a small (crossed black) mark. Attr ibuted to the

    The painting comprehends a soft black tracery of thedesign, with touches of light manganese purple and turquoise, the latter pigment predominating, and fills in theornamental diaper work of the spout. Th e handle is miss-

    with polychrome decoration under the brilliant silico-glass glazing.The painting presents clustered floral plants, in the

    characteristic pigments known as achtrmg in Persia, andwhich are analogues to the enamels of old Lindus or Rhodianpottery. Presumably made at Nantes, and ascribable tothe XVIIth or XVIIIth century.

    with geometric relief work, and sustaining a supplementarydecoration in polychrome colours under the brilliant silicaglass glaze.

    The design shows a series of borders in scrolled, flow-ered and fret ted detail. The thickly applied red pigment,usually attributed to the pottery of Lindus (Rhodian ), istypical and strongly marked in the painting.

    The exterior shows various waved borden in violetand blended blue flowers, with a form of thatching thatfills the middle section. The interior is finished with asmall border and a flowered rosette posed against thecreamy-white body colour. XVUith century.

    separately picked out in cobalt and turquoise colours; posed against the blue-painted background, involvingwhite fioral reserves, and fl'f:LDled by ornamental and archedoutlines in blue.

    The narrow sides present a turquoise-coloured ground,with hanging fioral motifs in white reserve delicately outlined in cobalt blue, and under a thin coating of siliceousglaze.

    The neck and base show small fiangea in green, with afioral bordering in white reserve. The foot underneath iscovered in vitreous turquoise glaze.This interesting and rare example may be attributed to the
