Budget Project -Summer 2020 Entering Grades 7 & 8 th
Welcome to Bishop McHugh’s summer math project. The entering 7th and 8th graders will work
on adding and subtracting with the possibility of negative numbers. It also includes work with
percentages in a fun kind of - realistic setting. This project can extend to the end of summer recess if
you want, but you must have at least 2 weeks for 6th graders and (4 weeks for 7th) of project materials
completed by the beginning of school. Keep your work and all papers in a file folder. On the front of the
file folder, include your job title, perhaps a picture, be creative, be neat and follow the rules for
Language Arts skills.
First, you will pick a profession from the list at the bottom of this page, sign your name next to the
profession and your salary will be on a weekly basis. (One Name per profession)
Second, you will pick from 5 houses to rent; prices will include utilities, and phone with your living
arrangement. Reminder - you are paid weekly, so put $$$ away each week for rent.
Thirdly, you will pick 1 activity to participate in each day. You must pay for your activities but not for
optional if you choose not to do that part.
Fourth, you will make a grocery list from the food groups given for each day, and repeat pages as
needed. Groceries are purchased every day for each meal and snack.
You must keep track of all expenses and income on your budget sheets. Every week you get paid and
once a month you pay rent. At the beginning of each day, you will get an “uh no” which is an unexpected
expense - it will be one of the Oh… No’s… below the professions and at the end of the day you receive
an income tax assessment, 10% (day 1), 5% (day 2), 2.5% (day 3) and 3% consecutively for each day. You
are to hand your sheets into Google Classwork each day; if it is not in by 8:00PM you will be assessed a
$50.00 deduction in pay. You could do an extra day as a bonus.
Lastly, on the last day of your budget planning you have questions to answer about the project.
Have fun, be creative, and remember you can’t eat the same meals each day, nor do the same activity.
