On the occasion of the end of the year celebrations, Galerie desGaleries opens a new series of exhibitions dedicated to the genre of tale. Artists, designers, architects, creators and storytellers will succeed each other to create new stories to awaken everyone’s imagination.

For this first occurrence taking place from November 8, 2018 toJanuary 27, 2019, the designers Gaëlle Gabillet and Stéphane Villard from GGSV studio present «Demain, le vaisseau chimère» (Tomorrow, the chimera ship): the story of a world transforming under the influence of weird entities. Natural elements –things and phenomena– have organized to alter the world’s aspect. They gave birth to a secret place, a metaphorical spaceship on which Man could be boarding tomorrow. Yet the path to go and visit this strange allegory has to be found. Only one door leads to it.

You are inaugurating a series of exhibitions about tales: what kind of universe do you want to create for this occasion?

We like the idea of proposing a sort of immersion in a world which would have different kind of material realities. As designers, we are constantly called out by the shape and the materiality of objects. From the point of view of a child, things are a certain way but could also be otherwise. They always challenge that dimension of objects. And that is where we join them. We have imagined a world in which some kind of entities would produce weird shapes.

Stones would have moved to make objects. The wind would have started to blow in cracks to inflate other objects. Plants would have plunged their roots into painting, thus creating strange, extravagant patterns. Going through the tunnel that extract you from the department store, one finds oneself in the vestibule of a weird palace, with four doors, each leading to a mysterious room implying the existence of entities inhabiting each of these peculiar universes. Some of them leading to a secret place…

The tale takes an important place in this project. What place has narration occupied in its creation?

The narration has been articulated around the production of things, objects, chimeras… We do not know of what these things are made. Entities started to create these elements, that is it. It could be about renewing the things that evolve around us, without the need of identifying the whys and wherefores. In that perspective one cannot say that the tale was well-structured to be then illustrated and presented in the space. What we rather see is a proposition of materialities. We could also consider

presenting these potentialities to our children, to hear what they identify and what they question. The staging was somehow articulated around an enigma: the several rooms which are juxtaposed do not seem to have much in common. The starting point of the tale is well known and it repeats itself in children’s stories: it is the home in which begins unexpected adventures. According to Gaston Bachelard: “the house is sometimes our box of souvenirs, sometimes a state of mind. It means that even before becoming a dream figure or an imagined place of our past-future, the house all at once holds and makes possible the process of memory. And because the house reveals intimacy, either to exterior elements or to interior details, it always is an actor of the present. While enclosing a personal and familiar universe, it exhibits at the same time procedures of opening: the house draws a line from itself to the others, between the group and the multitude. With its walls, its windows and its doors, the house opens to dialogue.” 1

What are the links between the different worlds that you have imagined?

There is no direct link. Each room is a universe on its own. The only thing that they share is the fact that they coexist within the same palace, which somehow stands for a dreamlike figuration of the house. This staging looks like a dream the meaning of which resists to full understanding, while retaining its own reason. Yet, this house secretly opens onto a secret garden accommodating a fountain. This later is modelled after the hybridization of the parallel worlds. We have invited writer Laetitia Paviani to imagine a contemporary tale. We have entrusted her with some elements from the narrative of this installation from which she built a story…

Who is this story for?

It is for everyone who has the spirit of a dreamer.

In which way has the department store inspired you in the conception of the scenography?

When the team of Galerie des Galeries mentioned the history of La Maîtrise – period of time in which Galeries Lafayette handled the complete process of manufacturing household items and the setting both of the windows and of the areas dedicated to the sale – appeared in our mind the image of an underground factory from which emerged both realities and a kind of fairyland. This scenography resonates with the representation of a big house which shelters unknown rooms and their creative entities….

GGsv sTudioGGSV studio was created in 2011 by Paris-based designers Gaëlle Gabillet and Stéphane Villard, who both graduated from ENSCI / Les Ateliers (national school of industrial creation). Their association produces a unique expertise vouching for their multidisciplinary. Ranging from curatorial projects and scenography, to product design and interior design, their practice is plural, and regularly puts the space in place of the site for the experimentation of design.

Having had their work presented, among others, at the International Biennial of Saint-Etienne, at the MUDAC in Lausanne or at Centre Pompidou in Paris, GGSV’s projects are characterized by the setting of a dreamlike universe which is built in volume and yet addresses grounding issues regarding the culture of objects. The deployed objects, built from scratches, often navigate a fine line between the real and the unreal, between, what is generally accessible and understandable and what is not. For Galerie des Galeries, GGSV studio invites visitors of any age to come and have an experience embedded in the unreality of the tale.

Laureates of the VIA carte blanche in 2011, of the Paris Shop & Design prize in 2014 and of the city of Paris award FAIRE Paris in 2018, they also won the 2016 call for projects to reorganize the interior of the Museum of modern art in Paris in collaboration with H20 architects. The object they create are produced by Petite Friture (France), Gufram (Italy), Ege Carpets (Danemark). Since September 2018, they are fellows of Villa Medicis – the French Academy in Roma, to lead their research on illusion and ecology through the medium of painting. © François Roelants

Galerie party, Centre pompidou, 2017

On the occasion of the celebration of the Centre Pompidou 40th anniversary, GGSV studio was invited to design a special event. That is how Gallery Party, - a fictitious travel in the midst of the National museum of modern art – was initiated. The inflatable structure on display would have been erected by two small beings who have been living hidden in the windings of the Centre Pompidou for years. They built their own world, by diverting the artworks from their original use….

Zones de Confort, Galerie poirel, 2016

In collaboration with CNAP, studio GGSV has de-signed the interior of an extravagant hoarder’s house. As co-curators and scenographers of this ex-hibition, they brought together a wide, weird array of objects aiming at questioning the various mea-nings of the notion of comfort, both from historical and contemporary perspectives.
