Hope Swancy Haslem – Panelist. An executive with 20 years of experience creating results-oriented sales, marketing, and partner alliance initiatives in the analytics/search software, electronic discovery, and legal media industries, Hope has demonstrated an ability to turn struggling groups into successful endeavors by focusing on efforts that emphasize collaboration and inspire innovation. Hope is considered an industry thought leader and speaks frequently on search technology, Big Data technologies, and cloud hosting issues. She graduated from Baylor University and Mississippi College School of Law and lives with her family in Lucas, Texas.Helen Broughton, CISM, CISA – Panelist. Helen Broughton is the Senior IT Security Analyst for DynCorp International. As one of the few people in the country to hold both certifications in Information Security Management (CISM) and Information Systems Auditing (CISA) Helen is a Senior IT Security Analyst with the responsibility of reviewing IT Security, Risk, Compliance, Information Governance and eDiscovery. Prior to assuming her duties at DynCorp International she was Senior eDiscovery Project Manager at 1stlegal. Helen holds a Bachelors of Business Administration from Texas A&M and a law degree from SMUDavid Schorpp – Panelist. David serves as an eDiscovery Specialist for Parkland Hospital in Dallas where he responsible for day-to-day eDiscovery activities of the hospital. This involves designing sand implementing the tools and processes necessary to manage the growing data management requirements. Previously David was with American Airlines with a background of airport operations/management and Information Technology. In 2006 He joined American’s eDiscovery efforts where he implemented tools and processes to meet the AA Legal Department’s requirements. David attended SMU’s School of Engineering and Applied Science.Roy Plattel – Moderator. Roy Plattel is the Senior Consultant and Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Flex Discovery. Roy has over 25 years of eDIscovery and data management experience. He has had the privilege or working in some of the country’s largest and most renown cases – from OJ Simpson to Texas Tobacco to Securitized Mortgage Fraud matters, big data and complex information management has been his career.

Privacy Issues in Information Governance – one of the greatest challenges of the management of information are the privacy issues. Increasingly documents and data are subject regulation that forbids or limits disclosure or destruction of data and documents. Examples are:

Information Governance – Foreign DataNon-U.S. based privacy data is a major area of concern for corporations and individuals.
1. Adherence to respective country laws when accessing, collecting, processing employee data (e.g., email, file shares, pc, mobile device(s)), even if located on company owned systems.
2. Operational requirements (e.g., global company centralizing computer systems in one location/data center, such as USA, to lower costs and improve support/performance and also provide disaster recovery/business continuity.
3. It is one thing to cross international borders with data to allow for corporate / IT operational requirements, however it is another to actively review and / or process data by collecting, and ingesting data into systems to perform analytics or search for individual content.
4. The definitions of review, disclosure and “processing” are broadly construed.5. Need employee consent to do many tasks that involve employee data.

Governing Archived Data (tape and other inaccessible data) Information Governance also extends to media that is not live and used for archival purposes.1. Using tape for archival of data - stockpiling of tapes with no tape
rotation.2. Lesser duty when using tape for disaster recovery vs archiving (data
maintained in systems/archive)3. Accepting the risk of - over years of not being able to identify what is
on tape (data type, dates, systems, etc).4. If you cannot identify the data because of legal requirements to
preserving these tapes it becoming virtually impossible to get rid of tapes.
5. Process over technology, it becomes very expensive to restore data, especially if technology has been outdated (software and / or hardware) This process could require specialty services to identify, restore, de-dupe and search large volumes

Retention policies should be created to keep what is required and purge what is not needed.Data classification- All data is not created equal.
