I have found some information about the Matthews family. Jane was baptised inSteeple Barton 31 Jan 1830, daughterof John and Mary Matthews. John, born Steeple Barton 1800, married Mary Simons from Kiddington (a nearby parish)on 26 Oct 1824 at Steeple Barton. Witnesses were Thomas Hollis, Elizabeth Matthews. Their children were: Ann,baptised 26 Mar 1826 at Steeple Barton. Eliza, baptised 31 Dec 1827 at SB, Then Jane. Then Eleanor, baptised 16 Oct1831 at SB. Then Thomas, 15 April 1832, died in 1835. Then James, baptised 28 Mar 1834, died 1836. Ann went on tomarry John Fenemore, full age (over 21) at Steeple Barton in 1852. The witnesses were Francis Burrowes and AnnMatthews. He was a gamekeeper from Middle Aston (nearby parish). An Eliza married in 1846, but there are so manyJohns, Elizas, Anns, James etc cannot be sure about this. Iknow I cannot trace Jane as you inform us she emigrated. Icannot trace Eleanor at all. No marriage, no burial at SB or nearby Westcote Barton. Could she possibly haveemigrated with Jane? John, Jane's father, seems to have been the son of Thomas Matthews and Mary Renn who weremarried at Steeple Barton on 16 Oct 1798. Witnesses Ann Preedy and Sophie Curtis. Do have a look at our websitewww.bartonshistorygroup.org - you will find all transcripts of the registers, plus nearly all our photographs and lots ofother information. Inthe family folder under Matthews (not yet on the web), I do have an output of Matthews from thecensus returns 1841-1891. Also is a compilation of all Matthews baptisms, burials and marriages for Steeple andWestcote Bartons. I could send these on if you think they would be useful. As for your Jane going out to Australia tomarry, the only explanation I have (I am not a professional) is that there was a shortage of men in England at that time, and there was definitely a shortage of women inAustralia. I think men advertised for wives who undertook that veryhazardous journey for whatever reason. I am searching for a local professional historian and when I come up with one, will send on their details and hopefully they will have a better explanation for you. In the meantime, you could look atthis source your end. I am sure .. these women emigrated. I wonderif Jane knew Dr. John before she went?

Jane Matthew of Steeple Barton Born 1830From: "pamela ferriman"To: .. @ .==~======~~~~==Received : 20/03/2012 11:14
Hello Barton History Group,
I am hoping that you may be able to give me some information about mygreat great grandmother Jane Matthew who was born in Steeple Barton in 1830.
Jane emigrated to Melbourne, Australia in the early 1850s where she marriedDr. John Hamilton Lowry, formerly of Raphoe Ireland and they had 13 children.
Jane Matthew's father was John Matthew, also born in Steeple Barton in 1800and he died there in 1874. His wife was Mary Symons.
Hoping you can help me find out more about my ancestors, and why a youngwoman would have come halfway around the word in 1850 on her own.
Best wishes, 1.- /~I1.-C\v, / 5(U> (C/

Dear Audrey
Elsie Matthews Deceased
e to trace t endents of all Elsie Matthews' first cousins, andfrom the details you have given me, it looks as though there may be thirteenfirst cousins who survived infancy, and may be alive still, or may havedecendents who are alive.
On the Parsons side I will need to trace James, Ellen, Albert and Walter, orif they have died already, their children or remoter issue.
On the Matthews side, I will need to trace John, Ann, Martha, Thomas, Mary,Arthur, James, Emily and Harry.
I know that John had two daughters, one of whom married a Benfield, and onewho married a Eaglestone. Both those names seem to be familiar Barton names, and I wonder whether you can let me know the present addresses of Joan, Jackand Roy Eaglestone, and "?" , Robin and Georgina Benfield?
I do know that James Matthews was the father of Charis, and that Charis marriedher first cousin, who was Arthur William Stevens. I know that Charis livesin Sandford, and of course I know their son James Stevens because he is the onewho has taken out a Grant of Letters of Administration.
One further point; I see that Elsie's brother William ma~ed FlorenceJefferies. I had been under the impression that William never married. Are your~latively certain that William and Florence had no children? Any nephew ornalce of Elsie would inherit her estate in preference to her first cousin
Any names and address or firstwould be ve hel ful indeed.
•COUSlns, or the children of deceased first cousins
Mrs A Martin
Dear Mrs Martin
I have now discovered that there is a relative of Miss Matthews who isdescended from the Parsons side of the family. I have spoken to him bytelephone, and i~I understood him correctly then he is descended from MissMatthews' ~ William (although I note that William appears on your familytree as having had no children). I propose to give this man (whose surname isPartridge) your address, and suggest that he contacts you. He has himselfbeen doing much research into the family history, and so I suspect that youmay both find it interesting to share information. I also hope that, betweenyou, you will be able to sort out even further the details of the family onboth sides.
