Terms And Conditions Of Sale

1. All persons attending the sale under the conduct of the Auctioneers shall be deemed to be on the land and premises entirely at their own risk and shall have no claim against the Auctioneers in respect of cancellation/postponement of a sale or any loss, accident or injury, however occasioned.

2. All bids made should be treated as offers made upon these conditions of sale and all persons present are admitted to attend a sale on the basis that they have notice of these conditions. All persons intending to bid must register at the registration desk before the sale starts.

3. The buyer shall be the person making the highest bid which is acceptable to the Auctioneers as signified by the fall of the hammer. In the case of a dispute, it shall be settled by the Auctioneers, whose decision shall be final.

4. The Auctioneers have sole discretion (a) to refuse any bid, (b) to advance the bidding as they may decide, (c) to withdraw or divide any Lot or combine one Lot with another, (d) to exclude any person from the auction room.

5. Lots put up for sale are subject (a) to any reserve imposed by the seller, and (b) the right of the Auctioneers to bid on behalf of the seller up to the amount of the reserve, but the seller shall not bid personally on any of his own Lots.

6. The Buyer shall during or at the end of the sale, pay the full purchase price plus 10% Buyers Premium either in cash or by cheque (in all cases by a valid cheque card, unless prior arrangement has been made). Cheques in excess of recognised limits will not be accepted from Buyers unknown to the Auctioneers, unless prior arrangements have been made with them, or Bank or other suitable references have been supplied. Non-compliance with this condition may delay the release of lots pending the clearance of cheques.

7. The Auctioneers will at the request of the Buyer store larger items at their premises at the Buyer’s risk. Items can be collected by prior arrangement.

8. The Auctioneers will execute commission bids, written or telephoned, free of charge. Postal bidders should use the form at the back of this catalogue. Commission bids will be executed as cheaply as possible having regard to any reserve and other postal bids or bids in the room. The auctioneers shall not, however, be responsible for any neglect or default in executing or failing to execute any commission bid.

9. Subject to condition 12, (a) Lots are sold with all faults and imperfections and neither the Seller nor the Auctioneer is responsible for any defects whatsoever; (b) no warranty is given or authorised to be given by the Seller or the Auctioneer with regard to any Lot other than that the Seller had the right to sell it; (c) any express or implied conditions or warranties, whether relating to description or quality, are hereby excluded.

10. Ample opportunity is given for viewing and the Buyer by making a bid, acknowledges that he has satisfied himself fully before bidding, by inspection or otherwise, as to its condition. This includes the physical and the description including, but not restricted to, whether the Lot is damaged or has been repaired.

11. The Auctioneers undertake that care has been taken to see that the catalogue descriptions, including rarity, origin and condition, are accurate and reliable, taking into account all the information available when the catalogue was prepared, but these are necessarily matters of opinion only and shall not be taken to be statements of fact.

12. Notwithstanding Conditions 9, 10 and 11, if the Auctioneers receive notice in writing from the Buyer within 7 days of the sale that in his opinion a Lot is a forgery, and on giving such notification the Lot in question is returned to the Auctioneers at their premises, in the same condition as when bought, then if on considering such evidence as the Buyer supplies to prove his assertion, the Auctioneers decide that the Lot is a forgery the sale of the Lot will be rescinded and the purchase price repaid to the Buyer.

13. The Buyer shall not become the owner of any Lot, and the Auctioneers shall have a lien thereon, until the Buyer has discharged the purchase price, plus the 10% Buyers Premium charge.

14. If the Buyer fails to pay for or remove any Lot bought by him or in any other material respect fails to comply with these Conditions, the Auctioneers shall have the right (a) to resell the Lot by public auction or otherwise without notice to the Buyer, and if any deficiency arises on such resale after deducting the full costs and expenses of the Auctioneers, the Buyer shall be responsible to the Seller and Auctioneers (but any surplus to be the Seller’s) or alternatively, (b) to store the Lot at the premises of the Auctioneers or elsewhere and to release the Lot to the Buyer only after payment in full of all reasonable storage and removal expenses incurred (in addition to the purchase price).

15. Persons handling Lots do so at their own risk and shall make good all loss or damage however sustained, such estimate of cost to be assessed by the Auctioneers whose decision shall be final.

MAIN AUCTION The main Auction will be in the Exhibition Hall and viewing will be from 7.30 a.m. The sale will start at 10.30 a.m. There will be a lunch break at Lot 300 for 30 minutes. Car parking on the site is restricted but there are a number of car parks within a short walking distance of the Centre. Please note not all items listed in the catalogue are photographed.

ALPHA LOTS There will be a large Alpha lot section on the day. This will be held in the Viewing Room at the Crewe North Signal Box. Viewing for this sale will be from 12noon until 12:30. Bids to be in by 12:30.

Lots will be sold to the highest bidder as determined by the Auctioneers on receipt of the special “Alpha Lot Bidding Slips” handed in by 12:30 on the day. The results of this Auction will be available at approx 2.30 p.m. and an announcement will be made in the Main Hall. All lots must be removed by 3.30 p.m. unless prior arrangements are made. We regret that Alpha lots are not available to poster bidders.

BUYERS PREMIUM Please note there is a 10% Buyers Premium to be added to the Hammer Price in the main auction and the highest bid price in the Alpha Lot Auction.

PAYMENTPayment is accepted by Cash/Cheque/Bank Transfer. Please make Cheques payable to: Crewe Railway Auction.

FREE BUS There will be a Free Vintage Routemaster Bus running to and from Crewe Railway Station and the Heritage Centre starting from 7.40am approx every 20 minutes for the duration of the day. The bus will break for lunch approx 40 mins at 12.40 to 1.10.

REFRESHMENTS There will be Homemade refreshments available all day in the North Signal Box.

CAR PARKING The parking at the Heritage Centre will be for staff, Disabled Badge Holders and Trade Stands only on the day. There is parking within 5 minutes walk of the event site at the following Car Parks:

•All Day Undercover Car Park near to the police Station (Between the old Christ Church Sites which are now closed for re-development) Fee: £2.90 all day.•Hope Street: 2 Car Parks opposite each other, 2 mins from Railway Station £2.90 one all day,£2.80 3-12 Hours on the other.•New Railway Station Car Park off the roundabout behind the Railway Station opposite B&Qentrance £2.50 all day (this is the best Car Park as you can walk round to the front of the Stationand catch our free vintage Bus)•Crewe Alex Football Car Park: £3.50 all day (Crewe are playing away on this day).

2 A chromed brass Locomotive Worksplate “BUILT BY THE BIRMINGHAM RAILWAY CARRIAGE & WAGON Co. LTD SMETHWICK ENGLAND 1961 SERIAL No. DEL 172” D 6568/33050 to traffic September 1961 at Hither Green then Stewarts Lane, it was named Isle Of Grain in May 1988 and was withdrawn in May 1993 & cut up by Philips’s of Llanelly at Selhurst Depot in January 1997. In Superb ex loco condition.

3 A cast iron Shedplate 3E Monument Lane 1948 to June 1960. The plate is in totally unrestored condition.

4 An LMS enamel Station Lamp Tablet “BRADLEY FOLD” a former LYR station between Bury & Bolton, the station closed in October 1970 and is now a housing estate. This sign has some face & edge chipping/rusting, size 20” x 4 ½”.

5 A BR(Sc) enamel Station Door plate “TICKETS” f/f in very good condition. Size 18” x 3 ½”.

6 A brass Locomotive Worksplate “LMS BUILT 1928 CREWE” in very good face restored only condition.

7 A framed & glazed Carriage Print “Knutsford, Cheshire” from the LMR series issued 1952. This depicts colourful street view with timbered houses and the Angel Hotel. In original frame.

8 A brass Locomotive Worksplate LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY No.60969 DARLINGTON WORKS 1943” ex Class V2 90969 sheds include Dundee & St. Margarets, it was cut up in August 1964 at Cowlairs Works. The plate is in face restored only condition. Size 9” x 5”

10 An early cast iron Road sign “TO RAILWAY STATION”, double sided with fixing bracket & bolt etc. In very good unrestored condition.

11 A pictorial enamel Advertising sign “NECTAR TEA” in Cup & Saucer shape, green on white with some minor face & edge chipping otherwise in good condition. Size 21” x 12 ½”.

12 A wooden One Engine Staff with brass plates “ABENBURY SIDINGS” & “WREXHAM CENTRAL”. In good ex service condition.

13 A cast iron Shedplate 2J Aston September 1963 to October 1963. The plate is in ex loco condition.

14 A North British Railway solid copper Station Wall Lamp with name tablet “BROUGHTY FERRY”. The lamp has a couple of cracks to the opaque glass otherwise it is in good ex station condition. This is complete with reservoir, burner & glass chimney and the top is clearly stamped “NBR”. A Scarce location to find anything from!

15 A brass engraved Locomotive Worksplate “1051 GORTON 1952” ex 26044 new Gorton in June 1952 to Reddish Depot for the Woodhead Line and was withdrawn in July 1981. It was cut up by Coopers Metals, Brightside Sheffield in February 1984. The plate is in excellent condition.

16 A London & North Western Railway Block Instrument, ivorine plated “FAST LINES RHYL No.1” a North Wales Coast location. In very good ex box condition.

17 A London & North Western Railway cast iron Tender plate “L&NWR No. 551” in ex loco condition.

18 A Great Northern Railway brass Vacuum Gauge, the face clearly marked “GNR” & “VACUUM GAUGE” and makers name “SALTER 0 – 30 INCHES”. In unrestored condition.

19 A (Highland Railway) cast iron Footbridge Makers plate “ROSE STREET FOUNDRY INVERNESS 1898”. The plate is in unrestored condition.

20 An enamel Advertising sign “RINSO SOAK THE CLOTHES-THAT’S ALL SAVES COAL EVERY WASH-DAY” white on blue/red with a couple of small face chips & some screw hole & edge chipping rusting otherwise good colour & shine.

21 A BR(M) enamel Station sign “PASSENGERS MUST CROSS THE LINE BY THE BRIDGE” f/f with very minor edge chipping otherwise in very good condition. Size 24” x 18”.

22 A BR(M) Locomotive Headlamp complete and in very good condition.

23 A Locomotive Smokebox plate “44046” ex LMS Fowler 4F 0-6-0 new Derby Works March 1925 as LMS 4046, it was renumbered to 44046 in May 1950. Allocations include Coalville, Burton & Rowsley, it was withdrawn in September 1963 & cut up in October 1963 at Derby Works. The plate is in face restored only condition.

24 An enamel Station sign “MIDLAND RAILWAY THESE BUCKETS MUST BE KEPT FULL OF CLEAN WATER AND USED ONLY IN CAE OF A FIRE” etc dated Jan 1909. There is some edge rusting otherwise it is a very good example of one of these signs.

25 A China Teapot side marked “CAMBRIAN RAILWAYS” and “TEA FOR ONE”. A Very rare Teapot in good condition.

26 A brass Locomotive Worksplate “ANDREW BARCLAY SONS & Co. LIMITED CALEDONIA WORKS KILMARNOCK No. 2119 – 1941” ex 0-4-0 ST ex Works 25/7/41 with “14 x 22” outside cylinders, 3,5 wheels ex Ministry of Supply, Linwood, Renfrewshire, to Raisly Quarries Ltd, Co. Durham in 1957, scrapped June 1970. The plate is in good face restored only condition.

27 A (Midland Railway) wooden Station Finger Board “BRIMINGHAM, DERBY, SHEFFIELD & YORK” with Pointing Hand, double sided and in very good condition. A Rare Survivor!

28 A large cast iron Kettle clearly embossed “BR(W)” in very good restored condition.

29 A cast iron Signalbox Door Notice “GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY NO UNAUTHORIZED PERSON ALLOWED IN THIS BOX BY ORDER”. In very good unrestored condition.

41 A BR(M) enamel Station sign “YOUR CYCLE IS STORED AT YOUR OWN RISK – PLEASE USE PADLOCK” f/f with a couple of minor chips otherwise in very good condition. Size 24” x 12”.

42 A London & North Western Railway Hand Lamp clearly stamped “LNWR CLAYDON COACHING No.1” & “A12892” to one side, and “LNWR CARR DEPT WOLVERTON” to the other side with LMS pattern reservoir. In good restored condition.

43 A cast iron Shedplate 17C Coalville 1948 to April 1958 then Rowsley 1958 to September 1963. In face restored only condition.

44 A Great Western Railway Drivers Tin Lunchbox brass plated with makers name “J DUKE LTD IRONMONGERS GRIMSBY” and also brass plated “GWR” & name “W.N.EVANS”. It is complete with padlock & key and in very good restored condition.

45 A BR(M) enamel Station Door plate “STATION MASTER” f/f in excellent condition. Size 18” x 3 ½”.

46 A brass 9” x 5” Locomotive Worksplate “LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY (No.) 69786 DARLINGTON WORKS 1911” from an NER Class Y design, designed by Vincent Raven with 20 built. Sheds include Hull Dairy Coates & Hull Spring Head, it was withdrawn on the 31st December 1957 & cut up in April 1958. The plate is in totally ex loco condition.

47 A Great Western Railway 1947 Thompson Tapper Block Bell in very good ex box condition.

48 A Great Western Railway brass cased Lower Quadrant Distant Signal Repeater in good ex box condition.

50 A Great Western Railway cast iron Cabside “4292” ex GWR 2-8-0 Tank new Swindon Works October 1921 to Swansea East Dock, later Duffryn Yard, Llanelly & Neath. It was withdrawn in October 1964 & cut up in December 1964 at the Steel Supply Co. Jersey Marine. The plate is in totally ex loco condition.

50A An LMS large silver plated Teapot with full company title & Coat of Arms to centre. In very good condition.

51 A BR(E) enamel Station Frontage Board “BRITISH RAILWAYS KNEBWORTH” with some minor chipping & edge rusting. This would benefit from a good clean. Size 96” x 24”.

52 A Great Central Railway saucer top Lamp Lighters Handlamp brass plated “GCR 13706 Connahs Quay” also stamped “GCR” & “13706” complete with conical spill holder and flame location hole. This lamp would have been used on the quayside lines of the former Wrexham Mold & Connahs Quay Railway. Non original reservoir/burner. Nicely restored. A Rare Lamp!

56 A London & North Western Railway metal cased Shelf Mounted Fletchers Signal Repeater with miniature signal and “IN – OUT” etc, the front is marked “FLETCHER’S L&NWR TELE _ DEPT”. In very good ex box condition.

57 A BR(S) enamel Poster Board Heading “BRITISH RAILWAYS” with minor edge rusting otherwise in very good condition. Size 27” x 5 ¾”.

58 A pair of (London & North Western Railway) cast iron Lever Backboard plates “TO LEICESTER” & “FROM LEICESTER”. Both in restored condition.

59 A cast iron sign “MIDLAND & GT NORTHERN JOINT RAILWAY TRESPASSERS WILL BE PROSECUTED BY ORDER” in the Midland short trespass style. This sign is in restored some time ago condition.

60 A Locomotive Smokebox plate “48251” ex LMS Stanier 2-8-0 8F new North British Hyde Park Works No. 24632 in September 1940 as WD 332 later WD 70332 to LMS 825 and later BR 48251. Allocations were Crewe South, Nuneaton, Speake Junction & Sutton Oak, it was withdrawn in October 1966 & cut up in February 1967 at Cashmores, Great Bridge. The plate is in unrestored condition.

61 An enamel Advertising sign “GILBEY’S WINES & SPIRITS” white on green with one chip to the right hand side & some minor edge chipping otherwise good deep colour & shine. Size 16 ½” x 8”.

62 A Great Western Railway pre-grouping copper top Handlamp complete with GWR copper topped reservoir. In unrestored condition.

63 A cast iron Shedplate 65A with large ‘A’, Eastfield Shed, 1948 Eastfield (Glasgow) 1950 to November 1966. The plate is in ex loco condition.

64 A Barry Railway 12” fuse Wall Clock, the face marked with makers name “BARRY & SONS CARDIFF” and “BARRY COY”, it also retains its ivorine plate “GWR No.661” and is complete with its pendulum & key. In full working order.

65 A BR(M) enamel Station Doorplate “WAITING ROOM” f/f with slight edge & screw hole chipping otherwise in very good condition. Size 18” x 6”.

65A A London & North Eastern Railway silver plated Coronation Coffee Pot with the High Speed logo to the side. In very good used condition.

66 A London & South Western Railway Signalbox Telephone with separate ear piece & complete with all its enamel plates. In very good ex box condition.

67 A Cambrian Railways metal Letter Rack brass plated “CAM-RYS” & clearly stamped “TOWYN” a location on the Cambrian Coast line. In very good ex station condition

68 A London Midland & Scottish Railway 1930s enamel sign “LMS CAR PARK” in Art Deco style, black on yellow with some minor restoration but still a good example of one of these signs.

75A A London & North Eastern Railway silver plated Hot Water Jug with Coronation High Speed Logo to the side. In very good condition.

76 A Great Central Railway Tyers Permissive Block Instrument in very good ex box condition.

77 A brass Locomotive Worksplate “BUILT BY THE BIRMINGHAM RAILWAY CARRIAGE & WAGON Co. LTD SMETHWICK ENGLAND 1961 SERIAL No. DEL 150” ex D6558/33040 new to Hither Green June 1961, it was withdrawn 14th May 1993 & cut up by Philips’s at Stewarts Lane Depot. This is the small Cab type plate and is in good ex loco condition.

90 A Great Western Railway cast iron Cabside “5673” ex GWR Collett 0-6-2 Tank new Swindon Works August 1926 new to Ebbw Junction later Shrewsbury, Llandore, Neath, Cathays & Radyr. It was withdrawn in March 1965 & cut up May 1965 at Birds Bynea. The plate is in totally unrestored condition.

100C An alloy Diesel Nameplate “CASTLE DONNINGTON POWER STATION” as carried by class 56 Locomotive 56091. The locomotive was built by BREL Doncaster in June 1981 and withdrawn in December 2006 having spent time in France. Sold to BAR in December 2011. It was named in June 1988 and the plates were removed in December 1998. In ex- loco condition. Size approx 65 ½” x 17 ¼”.

In 1940 it was acquired by Sheppard & Son, dealers of Brigend and reconditioned before being sold to S Williams & Sons Ltd at Dagenham Dock as their No.17 and named Dunraven. It was scrapped in 1949. This is engraved brass, size 11” x 6” and in ex loco condition.

199 A cast iron Bridge Notice “METROPOLITAN DISTRICT RAILWAY” with eleven lines of text, the bottom signed “55 BROADWAY S.W.1”. This sign is in unrestored condition with the bottom right hand corner missing. This is a Very Rare sign Indeed!

200 A Locomotive Nameplate “The Territorial Army 1908 – 1958” as carried by British Railways Britannia Class Pacific (No.) 70048 built Crewe Works in July 1954, it was named to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the T.A. The nameplates on this loco were unique in that they were the only double liners fitted to the Class and were unusually made of Aluminium. The loco was allocated to Holyhead from new and later Carlisle, Kingmoor and it was withdrawn there in May 1967. The front has been restored although the red background can still be seen, the back is in ex loco condition and it is marked with a large ‘R’ to indicate that this is the right hand side plate. Size 69 ½” x 11”. This is a Very Rare sign Indeed!

The locomotive was built by English Electric Vulcan Foundry as works number 3326/D825 in July 1963 and is still in service with DRS.. It was named in May 1997 and the plates were removed in January 2004. In ex loco condition.

250B An alloy Diesel Nameplate “DOLLANDS MOOR INTERNATIONAL” as carried by class 47 Locomotive 47 053. The locomotive was built by BR Crewe in November 1964 and withdrawn in November 1998. It was named in May 1994 and the plates were removed in February 1999. In ex- loco condition.

250C An alloy Diesel Nameplate “NORDIC TERMINAL” as carried by Class 60 Locomotive 60 053. The locomotive was built by Brush Loughborough as works number 955 in June 1991 and withdrawn in August 2008, currently for sale. It was named in February 1997 and the plates were removed in August 2008. In ex- loco condition. Size approx 50 ¼” x 17 ¾”.

250D An alloy Diesel Nameplate “THE BOBBY” as carried by class 47 Locomotive 47 746. The locomotive was built by Brush Traction as works number 482 in August 1964 and withdrawn in December 2003. Originally purchased by the Brush Type 4 fund is now owned by DRS It was named in November 1995 and the plates were removed in January 2004. In ex- loco condition. Size approx 59” x 9 ¾”.

250E An alloy Diesel Nameplate “SIR DE MORGANNWG COUNTY OF South GLAMORGAN” as carried by class 56 Locomotive 56 032. The locomotive was built by BREL Doncaster in July 1977 and withdrawn in November 2006 having spent time in France. Now active with COLAS Rail. It was named in October 1993 and the plates were removed in June 1997. In ex- loco condition. Size approx 96 ¾” x 17 ¾”

370 A Ruston & Hornsby type 30 DL Locomotive No. 339209 built 1952, 2FT Gauge, weight approx three tons. It was new to Mitchell Bros Tunneling Contractors, later at British Gypsum Bell Rock Quarry, Staunton In The Vale Nottinghamshire, it went into preservation at the Great Bush Railway where it was named ‘Bear’ then to Gwynne Slate Museum, Glynceiriog via Alan Keef. It was then bought back by Keefs and sold to the vendor in 2003. A good starter with good tyres & running gear, the bodywork is in good condition & the paintwork is in fair order. This comes complete with manufacturer’s literature, driver’s manual & spare parts list etc & the original Builders plate. A short video is available on our website. The Loco being is sold in situ at Telford and must be removed at the purchasers own expense within 6 weeks from sale date. This can be viewed prior to the auction by appointment.
