Award for St Edward s Primary Academy Congratulations to St Edward s on achieving School Games Gold Mark Award for the 2018/19 Academic Year. This is a Government led award scheme facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community. The sporting achievements of St Edward s included entering more events than ever before including B team and Special Educational Needs events. 100% of the Key Stage 2 pupils have attended at least one active internal school club during the year. There were many events and activities that led to the award and there will be a full report in the September Parish Magazine. For now, suffice to say that the school is delighted that the hard work of everyone has been From the Choir Stalls What a treat the One Achord Ladies Close Harmony Chorus provided for all who enjoyed the summer evening concert in St Edward s on Friday. The harmonious, unaccompanied foot-tapping singing had everyone smiling and humming along as familiar songs came thick and fast. Those brought up on the melodies of the Beatles, the Everly Brothers, the Beach Boys and Boyzone were in their element. Equally enjoyable were the renditions of Amazing Grace, Lead Kindly Light and Alleluia and the audience participation with The Grand Old Duke of York was great fun. The Choir s enthusiasm was infectious and it s unlikely that this will be the last time they come to Eggbuckland. Helpers with Refreshments Sought From Sunday, 28th July, there will be a new rota of volunteers to help with the refreshments after the morning services in St Edward s. If you are willing for your name to be included, please sign up on the list which is at the back of the church. An Attractive Site The work that was undertaken earlier this year by Community Life & Wildlife assisted by the City Council and Austin Farm Primary Academy on the patch of land at the junction of Carradale Road and Delamere Road is now proving its worth. The poppies in particular are putting on a beautiful display and the wildlife must surely benefit. Sea Sunday In addition to today being the 4th Sunday after Trinity, it is also known as Sea Sunday, hence the nautically themed decorations for which we have Brenda, Jen, Lin and Pauline to thank. Aspects of the Service will reflect the maritime topic and a retiring collection will be in aid of the invaluable work and support that is provided by Aggies – the Royal Sailors Rests Charity for which so many servicemen have had cause to be grateful over the years.

Only Joking! The following Freudian slip is recounted by a Reverend gentleman by the name of Peter Lawrence: In a wedding season there may be many names to be read out in the Sunday services, asking if anyone objects. It is easy to become a little absent-minded in such circumstances. A friend of mine found this happening to him and inadvertently said: “If any of you know cause, or just impediment, why these two persons should not be joyfully loined together, ye are to declare it.” There were some present who felt the new wording was an improvement.

Food Bank Plea The North Plymouth Food Bank is needing the following to cover the school summer holidays: Long-life milk, jam, sugar, snacks and ladies’ toiletries. Please place donated items in the box at the back of the church.

Open Day Walter C Parson, the Funeral Directors, advise us that they have an open day for the local community on Saturday, 20th July at their Crownhill office which is at The Firs, 702 Budshead Road. They say this is an opportunity to pop along, meet their friendly team and ask any questions you may have regarding funeral arrangements, options or planning for the future. Visitors will also be welcome to look around the newly refurbished premises and refreshments will be available. It is an open event for anyone to attend.

New Youth Club at Leigham Leigham Rock Solid is a youth club aimed at young people in school years 5-8. The club is designed as a safe place for young people to attend with their friends and burn off some steam towards the end of a long week at school. It is run by Plymouth Vineyard with other local churches. Club activities include a load of crazy games which usually involve a lot of running around or mess, as well as spending time eating free cake and ‘hanging-out’. Most weeks there will be discussion about God and other topics relevant to the young people. The Club meets at Leigham Hall in term times on Thursday evenings from 6-7.30pm and the cost is £1 per night.

Heavy Traffic On Friday morning, residents of Church Hill had a taste of what life might be like next year when a section of the Forder Valley is closed to traf-fic with diversion in place. On this occasion, due to an inci-dent on the Parkway at Mana-don, traffic was diverted, much of it finding its way up and down Church Hill to such an extent that pedestrians had great difficulty in crossing the road. If 17 months of such vol-ume is to be experienced, then

some form of traffic control must be consid-ered.

Slime Party On Thursday, 1st August, there is to be a Slime Party in Leigham Hall from 6-7.30pm which is free and this will involve making, stretching and throwing slime. All youngsters in school years 5-8 are invited. The organisers ask that we pray for the success of the party, safe interaction between leaders and young people and that they will return in September.
