At Knowsley Safari a lot of planning goes into designing new enclosures.
We need to make sure all of our animals are happy and have everything they need to live a
comfortable life.
Here is a list of things you MUST think about when designing a new enclosure!
Behaviour of the animal– does it climb, swim or burrow?
Habitat of the animal in the wild– Desert, Savannah, Rainforest
Diet of the animal– Herbivore, Carnivore or Omnivore
Size of the animal
Safety of the keepers
Fun experience for the guests
You will also need to make the enclosure interesting
for the animal
In the table on the next page there is an example of the sorts of things we would look at for an Amur
Tiger. For the rest of the animals think about which habitat they live in and what type of behaviours
they would be doing in the wild. Fill in the table.

Design a brand new enclosure for one of the animals above. You can either draw the new enclosure in the
space below or use different materials in your classroom.
Think about the animals’ needs, the keepers’ needs and the guests’ needs.
There is no budget so try to think of new ideas which will get guests to visit your enclosure.
