empowered me during the journey on working this study until the very end of
it. Many thanks, I lift to Him, the One who helps and gives me strength so that
finally I can overcome any difficulties and finish the study well.
Secondly, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all the
lecturers and the staffs in Faculty of Language and Arts, especially for my
beloved Major and Co-Major Sponsor, Dr. Heny Hartono S.S., M.Pd and
Emilia Ninik Aydawati, SP., M.Hum who always help me with their never-

study would not have been done.
I also want to thank my family who is always being there and always
support me in any situation not to forget to finish this thesis. Thanks to my

ABSTRACT
This research focuses on the motivation of the santris of Pondok Pesantren Askhabul
Kahfi Gunungpati in learning English. The writer was interested to do the research
because most people only know that pesantren only teach their students with Arabic.
In fact, the pesantren also teaches English. This research used quantitative research
intended to find out the degrees of motivations that santris have to learn English and
also to figure out the dominant factors that motivate santris to learn English . This
research emphasizes two kinds of motivations that the santris of Pondok Pesantren
Askhabul Kahfi Gunungpati have. They are the integrative and instrumental
motivation. The writer obtained the data from the questionnaire given to 42
respondents at Pondok Pesantren Askhabul Kahfi Gunungpati who take English class as their extracurricular. It was found that the santris have a higher degree of
integrative and moderate degree of instrumental motivation. They had more interest
to learn English because they wanted to be a part of the cultural societies rather than
to get the financial gain in time. There are also some factors which are believed to
motivate the santris in learning English, they are the classroom situations, the
teachers‟ way of teaching, the characteristics of teachers, and also the material
difficulty. The result of the research showed that the santris were motivated because
of the understandable teachers‟ way of teaching and also the characteristic of the
teachers which is supportive to the students.

ABSTRAK
Penelitian ini difokuskan pada motivasi yang dimiliki oleh para santri dari Pondok
Pesantren Askhabul Kahfi Gunungpati dalam belajar Bahasa Inggris. Penulis merasa
tertarik untuk melakukan penelitian ini karena banyak orang mengira bahwa di pondok-
pondok pesantren hanya mengajarkan murid mereka (santri) dengan Bahasa Arab saja.
Pada kenyataannya, di beberapa pondok pesantren juga mengajarkan Bahasa Inggris.
Penelitian menggunakan metode kualitatif yang bertujuan untuk mencari tahu tingkatan
dari motivasi yang dimiliki oleh santri untuk belajar Bahasa inggris, dan juga untuk
mencari tahu factor yang dominant yang memotivasi santri untuk belajar Bahasa inggris
menekankan dua jenis motivasi yang dimiliki oleh para santri dari Pondok Pesantren
Askhabul Kahfi Gunungpati yaitu motivasi integrative dan juga motivasi instrumental.
Penulis mendapatkan dara menggunakan kuisioner yang diberikan pada 42 responden di
Pondok Pesantren Askhabul Kahfi Gunungpati yang mengambil kelas ekstrakurikuler
Bahasa Inggris. Hasilnya, para santri mempunyai tingkat motivasi integrative yang jauh
lebih tinggi daripada tingkat motivasi instrumental. Mereka punya ketertarikan untuk
belajar Bahasa Inggris karena mereka ingin tergabung ke dalam kelompok budaya
tertentu daripada mendapatkan keuntungan secara finansial di masa depan. Ada juga
beberapa faktor yang memotivasi para santri dalam belajar Bahasa Inggris. Beberapa
faktor itu adalah situasi ruang kelas, cara guru mengajar, karakter guru yang suportif dan
juga tingkat kesulitan dari materi yang diajarkan. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan
bahwa para santri termotivasi dengan cara guru mengajar yang mudah dipahami dan juga
karakter guru yang suportif terhadap murid-muridnya.
