Old Business The 2020 Warbird Event was postponed due to

inclement weather on the scheduled date of Saturday, June 27. During the July meeting, the club members decided to reschedule the 2020 Warbird Event for Saturday, October 17. More details regarding the event will be discussed during future meetings.

The Club will hold a July 4th event, with picnic dinner and fireworks (bring your own fireworks). The club will provide the hotdogs and hamburgers, and soft-drinks. Please do not bring a covered dish or desert to share due to concerns over COVID-19. If you don’t think you want to partake of the club’s food, please feel free to bring your own. Please be aware that the Indianapolis July 4th

fireworks display has been cancelled. At this time, Danville’s July 4th fireworks display at Ellis Park has not been cancelled. If the Danville fireworks display takes place, there could be a great deal more traffic heading to Danville from the west side of Indianapolis during the late afternoon and evening of July 4th, as folks from the near westside of Indianapolis head to Danville to see their fireworks. Please be aware of this as you make your way to our flying field on July 4th.

The Club decided our NAMD Event will be held on Saturday, August 8th. The event will be mainly for club members and families. We will not advertise the event to the public over concerns about COVID-19. There will be no food served during the event. We will have some raffles, and we will be accepting donations for HVAF during the event.

We will discuss scheduling a highway clean-up event during the August or September meetings. Waste Management has been picking up trash along the highway between the Danville Kroger and the Avon Wendy’s.

Scott Black reported that Avon has approved a rescheduled date for the Spring Fling. That date will be Saturday, September 27.

Bryan Baumer agreed to become our Facebook page administrator. Rege and Parker Hall will also be administrator of the Facebook page.

Agenda items from the March meeting: Rege proposed holding a “strange shape” aircraft

contest. Must be electric/foam and can demonstrate them at the NMAD. This event was not discussed during the July

meeting. There was some field maintenance discussed

during the March meeting…fence posts are coming

out of the ground, and we also need to consider putting insulation up in the ceiling of the clubhouse. This work was not discussed during the July

meeting. We are still considering a small geotex runway

cover, but we need to wait to see what is going to happen with the runway drainage repairs. This work was not discussed during the July

meeting.

New Business

Jon Dieringer will host an introduction to Pattern Flying on Tuesday evening, July 7th. The introduction will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be held at the Club’s flying field. Jon will go over the AMA Pattern Flying competition rules and will show you how learning and practicing pattern flying can make you a better every- day flyer.

Please be reminded that if you fly on a 72 MHz frequency to be sure to post a pin on the frequency board by the clubhouse.

Indianapolis RC Club is hosting an all plane Fly-In on Saturday, July 11th, in Morristown, IN. They have just recently re-installed geotex on their runway, using a more durable product, so if you are interested in seeing how it feels to fly from a geotex runway, check out their Fly-In on July 11th. There was a discussion about contacting the Town of Danville regarding accessing water from the fire hydrant by the flying field. Bryan Baumer agreed to contact the Town regarding getting a meter and tap for the hydrant and report back to the Board of Directors. Ron Thompson said we could construct a sprinkler system from PVC relatively inexpensively.

With no further club business, the meeting was adjourned.

The August club meeting will be held on Wednesday, August 5th. The meeting will be held at the Flying Field Clubhouse and will begin at 7:30 PM.

One last reminder, please support your local hobby stores. Special thanks go out to HobbyTown USA in Castleton for extending a discount to our club for our monthly and year end raffle prizes.

Field reminders: - If you should ever have to call 911 (or order pizza), our address is 178 E. Twin Bridges Rd - If you are the last one at the field, be sure the clubhouse door is locked and the front gate is locked. - Fly safe, the AMA safety rules are posted by the door of the clubhouse. - If flying on 72 mhz, be sure to use the frequency board. - There are fire extinguishers located just inside the clubhouse door. - If you see trash or cans lying around, please pick it up. Let’s all keep our field beautiful. - Try not to overflow gas, glow fuel or smoke fluid on the grass, causes bare sports. - Be cognizant of others. - Watch for full scale planes. Avoid any interaction. - Please put aluminum cans in the bins that are located in the clubhouse and by the trash cans, we are recycling the cans to help pay for gas for the mowers. A Note from Tom Carlyle,

Fellow Blacksheep:

About a week ago, Rege received a communique from AMA regarding COVID-19 best practices and recommendations to clubs planning NMAD events. AMA strongly recommended that clubs NOT serve food during their events. They also recommended following CDC and local guidance on social distancing. The Blacksheep Board of Directors has discussed AMA’s message and recommendations. The Board thought it best to severely

scale back our NAMD event this summer. This change to the NMAD event will be discussed in more detail during the July club meeting.

Therefore, the following WILL take place:

We WILL hold the celebration of NMAD, but the event will not be advertised to the public.

We WILL be accepting monetary donations for HVAF during, or before, the event.

The following will NOT take place this year:

We will NOT be serving a lunch during the NMAD event. Bring your own picnic lunch if you desire.

We will NOT be holding a raffle during the NMAD event.

We will NOT be soliciting prizes for a raffle.

We will NOT encourage the public to attend the NMAD event.

Please remember that COVID-19 is still a risk. Recently, states that have begun to reopen businesses and have reduced restrictions on travel have seen a spike in the number of reported cases. The virus is still out there and it is still dangerous to older folks (like many of us in the club!). When you are at the flying field, please observe the social distancing guidelines from the CDC and local authorities. Please consider wearing a mask to not only protect yourself, but others, as well. And take hand sanitizer with you to the field, as we have limited hand washing facilities at the flying field.

Tom Carlyle

An Email from Rege Hall 2020 NMAD R/C Airshow. - Due to the Covid and economic impact it is having, the Board of Directors have put forth a plan to host the event on Saturday the 8th of August with several changes as to what we have done for past events. These changes include, but may not be limited to:

-No public advertising of the event, if spectators want to watch, they are welcome. They are also welcome to contribute to HVAF.

-We will not have a catered lunch as in the past, plan to cook hamburgers and hot dogs and pilots can bring their own lunch if they wish. A donation to HVAF can be offered for the lunch.

Page 4: An AMA Gold Club · An AMA Gold Club Newsletter Editor. Hello everyone, I’m John Lawyer and I am going to be taking over as the newsletter editor. I will admit I am terrible with

-We will not be out soliciting donations from local business and individuals as most have been hit hard.

-We plan to raffle a couple RC airplanes, but not all the items we have in the past.

-We will still raise the flag and play the national anthem in honor of our military and former military members.

-We are going to fly a Pony Express fun fly event. We will draw for teams, each team member will take off from a large circle on the runway with an envelope attached to his plane. Fly past an upwind and downwind pylon, land, get the airplane back in the circle to transfer the mail to the next team member. When the last team member completes the task, the mail (envelope) has to be removed from the plane and returned to the timing judge. This is a lot of fun and designed for all skill levels and all airplanes, nitro, gas or electric. Works better and more fun if you have landing gear.

Flash from the Past! Remember when we all built Fire Fly foamies as the new fad? They didn’t fly very well, but were inexpensive and left a lot of options for artistic flavor. This photo was a winter night in the gym at Danville North Elementary Grade School. The walls still have some colorful marks on them.

Funnies for the Month

Joe Millers B-36 I meant to get these pictures into last month’s newsletter and lost track of the email. Looks nice Joe.

2020 Soaring Nats. Scott Black and I were over at Muncie this last weekend to compete in the final weekend of the Soaring Nationals. I had gone a day early and was able to watch the Unlimited guys fly on Friday. It was amazing to watch these guys fly. They would take off one right after another from a wench launch. These Carbon fiber and composite gliders were amazingly strong. They would wench up to 350 or 400 feet then dip their nose to gain speed then pull up. At times they would zoom straight up for at least another 100 feet before they leveled off. Then they would find lift and most were doing the 10-minute flights that they were shooting for.

Page 6: An AMA Gold Club · An AMA Gold Club Newsletter Editor. Hello everyone, I’m John Lawyer and I am going to be taking over as the newsletter editor. I will admit I am terrible with

They would then do a spot landing inside a 100-inch target that was beyond belief. A lot were coming down like a lawn dart within a couple of inches of the target. Scott and I were there for RES (Rudder, Elevator and Spoiler), NOS (Nostalgia) and Two meter on Saturday and Sunday. We waited in the Rain for a couple hours Saturday before it was decided it was a lost cause and decided to cancel for the day and to try again on Sunday. Sunday wasn’t much better but a hardy 7 or 8 contestants waited till almost noon when the sky finally cleared and we got 6 rounds of RES and NOS and four of Two Meter. I found it humbling to struggle to get four to five-minute flights while watching others do the ten minute flight with no trouble. Some of the contestants would range a lot farther down wind than I thought was possible, but pretty soon here they came back to land back at the spot. If you ever get a chance to watch the soaring at the Nationals I think you will be amazed. First Two pictures are from the Unlimited Friday, the Rest are from Sunday when Scott and I were there.

One of the few wood planes that flew in unlimited. Sky Bird.
