PASTOR’S PARAGRAPHS 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

November 7, 2021

“Come away by yourselves and rest a while” (Mk. 6:31). Our Lord was fully human, and so He recognized the importance of rest, daily rest, retreat experiences, and what we call “vacation rest.” He spent time alone, as well as quiet time with His Apostles. Together they shared life experiences and deepened their relationship. It is a fact that people who take time off are healthier physically, emotionally, and spiritually. We need rest as much as we need food, water, clothing, and shelter.

I was blessed to take some time last week for rest. My parents, my sister and brother-in-law, nieces, and nephews traveled to St. Germaine in northern Wisconsin for a weekend vacation in the woods. They spent time cooking, playing outside, horseback riding, and laughing together. It is a rare opportunity for this part of my family to enjoy time together.

Last Sunday, they brought mother to join me for an extended vacation. We met in Madison, and traveled from there to Milwaukee. It was nice to have a traveling companion for the journey. We stayed at some nice hotels, ate fine meals, and visiting some great places.

One of my favorite stops on any trip is the local zoo. Milwaukee has a fine zoo. A trip to the zoo is a wonderful opportunity to learn and get exercise. We walked for four hours (don’t know how many miles, but mom said it was a lot!). I learned some interesting facts about animals. For example, the Humboldt penguin lives off the coast of Chile and Peru, weighs 8 to 10 pounds, and lives up to twenty years; the name rhinoceros comes from two Greek words, “rhino” meaning nose, and “ceros” meaning horn, so a rhinoceros is named for the horn on its nose; this horn is made of the same material as our fingernails; zebras look the same, but no two zebra’s stripes are the same; giraffes in the wild take care of each other by watching out for predators while their mates drink from streams or watering holes. As I walked with mother through the zoo, I marveled at the amazing variety of God’s creation (I can only imagine what Noah’s ark was like!). The zoo is a fun and fascinating place to explore and grow in knowledge.

The other highlight was a trip to a national monument called “Ten Chimneys.” Actually I didn’t know anything about it until I saw a sign on the highway and suggested to mother that we visit the place. And what a place it is! Ten Chimneys is the estate of Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, great stage actors from the 20s through the 60s. “Ten Chimneys resides in a wonderful, bucolic environment formed by the glaciers and enhanced by the Lunts. Everything here has been guided and directed by Alfred Lunt himself,” according to a booklet on the monument. We met the president, Mr. Randy Bryant, a wonderful gentlemen who explained the significance of the place. It is where many actors and actresses visit, including Phylicia Rashad and Alan Alda. Ten Chimneys is named for the ten chimneys of homes on the property. I was interested in staying longer, but time did not permit it. Maybe next year I’ll take mother for a champagne and canape tour (canape is a decorative food such as bread). We enjoyed our short stay at this beautiful place.

Daily Mass and prayers were part of our trip (our guardian angels were watching over us!). I thank Fr. Paul and Deacon Jim for assisting in my absence, and spending time with you as they provided the holy sacraments. I hope you take an occasional vacation with loved ones. It is part of the abundant life. God bless you. Fr. Ray Atwood [email protected] 319-283-9577
