Going into Hospital? If you or one of your

family is going into hospital please ensure

that the Catholic Chaplaincy at the hospital is informed so that the inpatient can

receive appropriate care. At the moment, access to patients in hospital is restrict-

ed and the chaplain may be the only person outside the strictly medical staff who

can be in contact and who can supply the consolation of sacramental and pastoral

care to relieve busy ward staff. Your relative will then receive regular visits from

Fr Daniel, Fr Rob or Fr Phil during their stay. You can also keep in touch with the

occasional phone call to the ward but please be conscious of the workload of staff

at this hectic period for front line health personnel. To contact the chaplain’s

office call 02392 286408 (or through the main switchboard 02392 286000). You

can also email at [email protected]

7th July 2020— Bishop Philip writes...

Last Sunday (5th July 2020) at 2 pm in the Cathedral, keeping within the various health and safety proto-cols, I ordained Rev. Matthew King to the priesthood and Anthony Fyk as a deacon. At the same time, Ambrose Chou and Edward Hauschild were instituted to the ministry of lector and acolyte respectively. Later, during Evening Prayer, Paul Nwune and James Lewis were accepted as candidates and three new students, Tom Hiney, Francis Ezeani and Yipeng John Ni, received a special blessing as they begin their

formation. Here is the homily I preached at the Mass: I will praise your name for ever, O God my King. This day, as the Psalm acclaims, is a day of great joy, as

the Lord bestows upon our Diocese a new priest, Fr. Matthew King. We’re sorry your parents cannot be here but it’s great to have with us your brother Nathan. It’s also a great joy that today the Lord grants us a new deacon, Anthony Fyk. I know your parents and brother are watching over the internet and we send them our greetings. Both of you come from afar, South Africa and Canada, but now you have a home as members of our Diocesan family. For both of you it’s been a long and winding journey, but now what God planned from all eternity comes to fruition. We must also congratulate today Ambrose Chou on becoming a Lector and Edward Hauschild on becoming an Acolyte. Later at Vespers we will pray for our two candi-

dates, James Lewis and Paul Nwune and we’ll ask God’s blessing upon our new students Tom Hiney, Fran-cis Ezeani and Yipeng John Ni.

Bear with me, for today’s Gospel is crucial: I bless you Father, Lord of heaven and earth! Here Jesus lets us see into his Sacred Heart, into His inner joy, into the relationships within the Blessed Trinity. Tenderly He adds: Come to me all you who labour and are overburdened, inviting us to find in Him an answer to all our needs. Shoulder my yoke and learn from me for I am gentle and humble of heart. Jesus is our model: if we follow Him, we’ll find the way to TGLHH&F. Sometimes people present Christianity as a moral code of do’s and don’ts: Old Testament religion. Yet what’s core, unlike any other world religion, is a personal friendship with Jesus Christ and the love, joy and energy that comes from Him. It’s from spirituality that morality and doctrine derive. This is why in a moment Anthony and then Matthew will make a dramatic and moving gesture: they will lie prostrate on the floor before the altar. Yes, a gesture of prayer. Yes, a

gesture of service. But more, it’s a gesture expressing total self-offering and consecration to the Person of Jesus Christ. They are giving their lives away. They are giving their lives to God. They are giving their

lives to Him in order to receive their lives back from Him transformed and enhanced. To our 21C, today’s liturgies of ordination and institution, of candidacy and entrustment, speak a thrilling truth. They proclaim that God does exist, that He is a loving Father actively caring for us, that His Son is One for Whom a man will give up everything, even his life, to follow Him, and that the Holy Spirit is all-

powerful, able even now to give a man a vocation and the grace to respond to it. What’s more, these ordi-nations demonstrate that the Catholic Church, despite it all, despite the opposition, despite 2000 years of

its own turbulent history, not only survives: it’s thriving. It’s wonderful to belong to the Church Christ founded, and to serve it. In our secular culture, there are now vast numbers of people spiritually adrift,

with no faith, no religion, no God. There are vast numbers of people in need, poor, unhappy, without hope There are also vast numbers of Catholics who do not practice, who do not know Jesus, who carry on with-out the Sacraments and a community to belong to. This is why the Church is calling us to the work of mis-

sion, outreach and evangelisation, and why we thank God today for enriching our Diocese with new re-sources. Let us pray that these new ministers will be passionate evangelisers, humble and holy, orthodox,

creative and courageous, so that the Gospel of Christ will reach every single person living in our place.

Anthony and Matthew, in a few moments you will receive the Sacrament of Holy Order. By this Sacra-ment, you’ll be set apart within the Christian community, respectively as a deacon and as a priest. Onto-logically configured to Jesus Christ, you will share in His three-fold mission as Priest, Teacher and Shep-herd. Make no mistake: this is going to cost you **everything.** This is why before anything else I urge you: be men of prayer. Offer the Mass every day; be faithful to the Liturgy of the Hours; say the Rosary; go regularly to Confession. Study the lives of the saints and the Church’s teaching, and keep up to date. Do your duties completely for Christ, for that’s the spirituality of the diocesan priest: to do well what we have to do; the reward is in the doing. Love people; love even the arkward ones, the sourpusses, the

moaning minnies, although don’t neglect the 99 sheep for the demands of one. And be resilient; don’t set your comfort-zone too high; put others before yourself and besides an SD have a mentor or supervisor to monitor and advise you. This is why you’ll need to spend an hour every day with Jesus in the Blessed Sac-rament, to draw from Him the strength you need. In this way, those words of Jesus in today’s Gospel will

become real for you: Yes, my yoke is easy and my burden light. May God Who has begun the good work in you bring it to fulfilment. Today, that prayer of the Liturgy is our prayer for all of you: for Tom, Francis and John as they begin their formation, for Paul and James as

they become candidates, for Ambrose and Edward as they receive the lay ministries, and for Anthony and Matthew as they are ordained. Ordination is the end of a journey. Yet it’s really the start of a great adven-

ture. God will never let you down. He will lead you on. He will confirm that you’ve chosen the best, the greatest, the most fulfilling way of life a man could ever choose. So in this Mass today, let us call on She Who is our Mother for Her support. Let’s invoke St. John Vianney, the good Curé. Let’s ask the prayers of our diocesan patrons St. Edmund and Blessed Pier Giorgio and all our own friends in heaven that the Lord will bless us all with His love. May the Lord fill us with happiness today. May He grant us many more vo-cations to the sacred priesthood. May He reward those in our Diocese who work so hard to promote and foster vocations: I’m thinking especially of Canon Gerard and Fr. John. May you persevere in your voca-

tion. And may you one day be found worthy to hear the Lord Jesus say to you: Well done, good and faith-ful servant; come and enter the happiness of your Lord.
