WELC MEWELCOME TO ONE GOOD TURN BY UNA MCKEVIT T. IF YOU ARE JOINING US IN PERSON, YOU ARE THE FIRST PHYSICAL AUDIENCES TO AT TEND A LIVE ENSEMBLE PRODUCTION PERFORMED ON THE ABBE Y STAGE SINCE MARCH 2020. WE ARE SO GL AD TO HAVE YOU BACK IN THE BUILDING WITH US. WE ALSO E X TEND A VERY WARM WELCOME TO OUR AUDIENCES TUNING IN FROM THEIR OWN HOMES, AS WE CONTINUE TO MAKE OUR PRODUCTIONS AVAIL ABLE ONLINE.

One Good Turn will mark a turning point in the Irish theatre landscape. After a year of creating primarily digital projects, that helped us to safely employ over 600 artists, the Government’s recent announcement that theatres can re-open, allows the re-emergence of live theatre and the return of audiences to our theatre seats.

The last 15 months have had a profound impact on the theatre industry and, in particular, its artists. We want to extend our sincere thanks to Minister Catherine Martin T.D. and her colleagues for the admirable work they have done in advocating for the theatre community.

Re-opening is a journey, one that will be travelled slowly and safely. We are opening at about 10% capacity with strict COVID-19 protocols in place for both our artists and audiences. To ensure we are still doing our best to serve all of Ireland’s audiences we have developed a hybrid format that allows us to have a limited live audience in the auditorium, while it is being filmed and live-streamed to people at home at the same time. This flexibility will ensure our work continues to be widely available.

We are really proud to bring audiences this wonderful new play from Una McKevitt, which also marks her Abbey stage debut. We would like to welcome Director Emma Jordan, the brilliant cast of Pom Boyd, Catherine Byrne, Liz FitzGibbon, Bosco Hogan, Aoibhéann McCann and Shane O’Reilly as well as the design teams back to the theatre, and to thank all the Abbey staff for bringing this production to life.

We hope you enjoy the show and thank you, so much, for coming.

TURN IT OFF AND ON AGAIN.

A few years ago, I wrote down a conversation between myself and my Dad where he was asking me to fix the reception on the TV and I was trying and failing to do that. I couldn’t see where that conversation could go, so I put it away and only came back to it when I started working on One Good Turn in Spring 2020.

With One Good Turn I wanted to try and capture something of the dynamics of caring for someone and being cared for by someone in the family home, the two sides of the experience. It can be a complicated time for a family and it’s not something that skates off in your memory never to be seen again; it makes an impression.

I wanted as much as I could to reflect that shared experience back to an audience in a warm but honest way. But I didn’t know where to start. Sitting in the shed staring into space that scene with the TV came back to me, so I dug it up and started there.

Una McKevitt
