AMYS RETREATFOR KIDS WITH CANCER THE SHEFFIELD-BASED CHILDRENS CANCER CHARITY

z

A Grand Day Out

SCHOOL TRENDS COMMITS TO AMYS RETREATWaterthorpe school uniform company School Trends has made a long-term commitment to Amys Retreat for Kids with Cancer. So far their workforce has raised several thousand pounds doing everything from plant sales to sponsored bungee jumps, and a company day out in the Lake District (see photo) which included a sponsored walk. All of the money they have raised has gone to help families who have children receiving treatment for cancer. Families are nominated for holidays by the CLIC Sargent social work team, and Amys Retreat is proud to be able to say that, with the help of School Trends and people like you making donations and taking part in sponsored events, we have never turned a family down for a holiday. Help us to continue to meet this demand by making a donation today (see page 4 for contact details).

2006 and 2007 have seen amazing performances from teams representing Amys Retreat in the Ramshackle Rally, a 1,500-mile race around Europe for cars costing less than 100. Nursing their old banger through Calais, Annecy, San Remo and Monte Carlo 2007s brave lads brave lads nally made it to La Tomatina, the infamous tomato-throwing festival, in Valencia. Their fantastic fundraising effort followed in the footsteps of the 2006 team who actually won the rally!

How can I help?

Thurcroft Cancer FundThe Thurcroft Cancer Fund gave a tremendous boost to our ability to meet the demand for holidays and respite breaks by making a second donation of 5,000 to Amys Retreat for Kids with Cancer in February 2008. Thurcroft Cancer Fund handed out an incredible 65,000 to various cancer charities at the Gordon Bennett Memorial Hall, Thurcroft, on Friday 29th February. Most of the money was raised through their charity shop from selling items in the 50p to 2 range!! The money will help enormously with Amy's Retreat's work this year, and in straight nancial terms will pay for ve families who have a child with cancer to take a holiday/respite break. However, as with all donations to Amy's Retreat, the Thurcroft Cancer Fund donation will help many more people as those families and their friends tell others about the charitys work.

Steve Phillips - Hero! This article is dedicated to all the runners, from the Santa 5K to the Great Union Canal Race, who have endured all sorts of hardships to raise money for Amys Retreat for Kids with Cancer. The note below comes from Steve Phillips fundraising website, and sums up the experiences of all our runners: On Sat May 24th 2008 I was on thestart line of the Grand Union Canal Race. (GUCR) Britain's longest, toughest, non-stop running race. TheGUCR is run from the centre of Birmingham to the centre of London along the Grand Union Canal. I was required to complete the 145 mile distance within the time limit of 45 hours with no stops longer than 40mins. Putting it simply: It's ve and a half marathons in just under two days with no sleep, easy !!!! Unfortunately I failed to nish, reaching 95.55 miles before having to pull out through general fatigue, blisters like you've never seen and a torn calf. In the words of a famous actor "Ill be back". Thanks to all that have donated and for your words of encouragement. Donating through my sponsorship page (http://www.justgiving.com/ grandunioncanalrace) is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efcient way toget money toAmy's Retreat For Kids With Cancer. Don't be put off by lling things out on the computer, the main thing is that the donation can be changed to as little or as much as you want. Think of the price of a takeaway, a pint of lager or a packet of cigs, please dig deep. Take care, and thankyou, Steve Phillips. Stop press: Tuesday 27th May Ive just spoken to Steve, and hes a bit sore, but otherwise ne, and he really means it when he says hell be back next year. Hes raised about 1,500 so far, which is absolutely brilliant. If you want to start with something a bit less ambitious, but still an enjoyable challenge, why not try the Great Yorkshire Run in Shefeld on 7th September. Sponsorship forms are available from info@amysretreat.org.uk and entry details are at http://entry.greatrun.org/EventInformation.aspx? StreamId=19 . Last years inaugural event saw 5,000 runners take part, and was a great experience, with lots of people taking the time to cheer the runners on their way
