Please help the SB Beta Club and
the DFD as we team up to race
up to the TALLEST building in
Dallas to raise awareness and
money for the Cystic Fibrosis
Foundation! The Bank of Amer-
ica Plaza, also know as “The
Green Building,” has generously
donated their building, staircases,
and lobby area for this fantastic
event taking place on Saturday,
October 19, 2013. All elementary students received coin boxes to help raise donations for CF research. Please return all donations
to the school by Thursday, October 17th. The grade that raises the most money will WIN an ICE CREAM PARTY! For more in-
formation, you may contact any Beta member or sponsor, Mrs. South, at [email protected]. Thank you for your support
as they “lead by serving others.” Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a life-shortening, genetic disease affecting approximately 30,000 children
and young adults in the US. A defective gene causes the body to produce an abnormally thick, sticky substance in the lungs and di-
gestive system that hinders the body’s ability to breathe and absorb nutrients. Currently, there is no cure. The Cystic Fibrosis Foun-
dation is aggressively pursuing a cure for CF by efficiently investing in cutting-edge, lifesaving science.

Hailey Waid—takes care of an in-
fant baby, a doll version that has
many of the same qualities of a real
baby, including having to be taken
care of around the clock. Students
cannot play volleyball unless they
have a babysitter. They must make
sure that it sleeps throughout the
night or must listen to its cries. One
student said that she could see how
parents could get so frustrated that
they would want to shake their
baby. Of course, one must have
reached the maturity level where
restraint and self-control are a part
of you. Yes, you will have over-
whelming love for your child, but a
baby can also be very trying. Your
freedom is definitely impacted
when a baby is in the picture.
Hailey is a student in Mrs. Vandi-
ver’s Child Guidance class.

Character Education
The elementary students enjoyed reading Have You Filled a Bucket Today by Carol McCloud with Mrs. Mahan. This was the first of what will be a monthly character education lesson in each elementary classroom. The students learned about bucket fillers and bucket dippers, and all students came up with ways they can be bucket fillers at home and school. If you visit campus, you can’t miss all the colorful buckets on the bulletin board as you enter the main hall-way with the students’ ideas for making our school and community a kinder and happier place to be.
Caught Being Good
We have a new program on campus to recognize and reward positive behavior in grades PK through 6th. The purpose is to encourage and promote desirable behav-iors rather than simply punishing negative behaviors. Stu-dents that go above and beyond the established behavior expectations are rewarded with tokens that can be traded for items from the “Caught Being Good” cart each Friday afternoon. For example, a student that helps a classmate without being asked to do so may receive a token from his or her teacher. The students are also learning about cost, spending, and saving through this program. The items on
the cart have different token values, and the students have to decide whether they want to save their tokens to get a more valuable item or spend them at the end of each week. If you or your business would like to donate items to the “Caught Being Good” cart, please contact Mrs. Mahan.

Chick Hatches in Science
Class—In preparation for
their science project in the
spring, Landon Dorner (not
available for picture) and
Tyler Raine (pictured left,
with science teacher Mrs.
Fischer) brought eggs from
home from their chickens
that they raise. A total of 9
eggs total were placed in
the incubator. Three were
infertile. Five were still-
births. One hatched. Tyler
is cradling him in his
hands.”Landon and I are
really excited we got to
start our breeding operation
early. We are thinking of
including turkey and quail
in our experiments also.”
