We’ve kicked 2019 off on a high note with two incredible signature events and a bunch of successful programs. Our first event this year was our annual Venture Conference hosted at NJIT. This event allows us to celebrate the region’s entrepreneurial spirit. We had 48 startups that took the stage and pitched the next unicorn to a room full of investors and business leaders! In addition, we had Fanduel’s David VanEgmond sit down with Richard Gearhart to talk about what makes Fanduel stand out

from all of its competitors. The energy from this flowed right into our next signature event, the Future Forum. We spent the day at Bell Works where we discussed the latest in HealthTech with Joseph Scott from RWJBarnabas. We also discussed AI Innovation with Chris White from Nokia Bell Labs. The evening concluded with 42 rising stars in STEM honored in our fun Game of Thrones inspired reception!

With another amazing spring under our belt, we are ready for the rest of 2019. We’ll

kick off the summer with our CFO + Investor Awards on June 7th in Princeton and we also have our Leadership Summit lined up for June 26th in Teaneck! Make sure you join us for both. See you soon!

Spotlight Profile: Rachel Lyubovitzky, Everything BenefitsNew Jersey Local Leads Us Into New Era Of Workplace Benefits

Over the past decade, we’ve seen just about every part of the business world overhauled by technology and innovation. One of the last departments to see drastic changes and improvements is benefits. The technology company leading the charge in this space is located right here in New Jersey.

EverythingBenefits recently celebrated its fourth year of “Making Life Simpler.” The company offers unique solutions that enable companies to focus on what they do best and accomplish more with EverythingBenefits taking care of helping to manage their employee benefits. The employers clearly resonated to this value offering as EverythingBenefits is proud to announce share that its solutions impact over 3,000 corporate clients, more than 200 channel partners, and over a Million users.

The team has led the benefits space since 2015, driving the much needed technological overhaul of what was previously a highly fragmented sector plagued with manual, paper-based processes. Recent company accomplishments include:

• Increased customer and user base: In the past year, EverythingBenefits doubled its customer base to over 3,000 clients while crossing the one million user mark.

• New Solutions: Since inception, EverythingBenefits has continued building out its products to provide customers with the most complete solution set. Most recently, the company expanded its suite of benefits administration solutions with the Consolidated Billing + Payments product, which gives employers the ability to generate, manage, and process consolidated carrier invoices.

• Expanded Partnerships: EverythingBenefits has realized year-over-year growth of over 37 percent within its distribution and technology partner base. Recent additions include Transamerica, Benetech and Ban-Koe Companies.

• More Platform Integrations: A partner of choice for some of the industry’s largest platforms, EverythingBenefits most recently added integrations with ADP and PrismHR to help expand the breadth of solution offering and close experience and feature gaps for the joint customers.

With the goal of expanding its world-class technology, EverythingBenefits now partners with hundreds of payroll/HCM platforms and resellers; its reach spans over 600 insurance carriers, third-party administrators, and brokerage agencies. The technology they’ve created allows companies to focus on what they do best, instead of having to face the distractions of administrative hurdles often associated with employee benefits.

It’s not just great for employers, EverythingBenefits also helps employees. The

company eliminates frustration and confusion when employees select workplace benefits. The platform’s key features include:

Carrier Connectivity:

EverythingBenefits ensures data and any relevant updates get to insurance carriers quickly, accurately and without manual or redundant processes. Employee enrollment data is securely communicated from clients’ solution to insurance carriers using digitized enrollment forms or electronic data interchange (EDI). The best part is Carrier Connectivity is easy to integrate and lives on top of clients’ existing technology.

Carrier Connectivity Benefits:

• It’s Paperless: EverythingBenefits solutions allows clients to completely eliminate paper and manual benefits processes. Clients benefit from total automation including delivering enrollment and benefits data to insurance carriers for open enrollment, life change events, new enrollments, address changes, and terminations.

• No Overpayments: Clients can rest assured that they won’t be overpaying for employees terminated from coverage. On average, one month of overpaid premiums cost $520 for a single employee plan and $1,462 for an employee family plan. That doesn’t even include overpayments for coverage beyond health insurance.

Types of Connectivity Provided:

• Insurance: The data is securely and automatically communicated to insurance carriers for health, dental, life, short-term disability, long-term disability and other supplemental insurance.

• 401K: The necessary data and ongoing contributions are securely delivered to 401(k) providers.

• Savings Accounts: Administrators and banks receive enrollment and contribution data for HSA’s, FSA’s, HRA’s, PRA’s.

EverythingBenefits COBRA Administration

EverythingBenefits COBRA Administration handles the entire COBRA implementation process from distributing notices to maintaining communication with beneficiaries, monitoring coverage periods to managing premium payments. Implementing COBRA Administration allows organizations to save time and resources eliminating time-consuming, manual, and paper-based processes. The best part is that this and all other EverythingBenefits solutions are simple to integrate and live on top of clients existing technology.

Product Features:

• Automated Notifications: EverythingBenefits can automatically track for qualifying events and eligibility, and stakeholders are immediately notified of these events.

• Two-Click Approval: In as little as two clicks, stakeholders can review and approve (or reject) beneficiary’s qualifying events.

• Compliance Reporting: Stakeholders can track notifications through the USPS, review initial and qualifying events, and see virtually everything audited within the system through the standard reports.

EverythingBenefits Automated New Hire Reporting

EverythingBenefits’ Automated New Hire Reporting solution allows companies to automatically and securely deliver notices of their recent hires to the local state authorities as laid out by the requirements of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996. EverythingBenefits proactively monitors for new hire events in payroll/HR systems and generates new hire reports to be sent to the respective reporting authority, helping companies maintain compliance

standards.

Product Features:

• Flexible Integrations: Using a standard Application Programming Interface (API), EverythingBenefits connects with any HR/Payroll platform and pulls data to generate a new hire report.

• Proactive Monitoring: The solution proactively monitors for new hires and notifies clients when their report is generated in the system.

• Auditing Capabilities: Keeps track of sent notices and forms.• Consolidated View: See the data in a single report that includes all new

hires and which actions to take.

EverythingBenefits Benefits Reconciliation

Benefits Reconciliation from EverythingBenefits is an automated reconciliation platform that combines relevant invoice data from benefit service providers with internal information on the company payroll and enrollment systems. The result is a fully reconciled benefits premium report that highlights discrepancies and tells users exactly where to find them; the automated process takes mere seconds. Benefits Reconciliation helps to effectively manage benefits costs and reduce liability issues by addressing some of the following common benefits billing concerns:

• Overpayment – even after an employee leaves the company or drops coverage, carriers continue to charge their monthly premium.

• Underpayment – an employee enrolls in benefits, but this information doesn’t get reflected in carrier billing.

• Under-deductions – an employee increases coverage, but deductions don’t change, leaving the company to cover the cost.

• Incorrect enrollments – during open enrollment or following a qualifying life event, an employee’s enrollment conflicts with carrier invoices.

• Historical Trends – companies already know their current monthly premium, but need to see the analysis of historical benefits spending that will help with planning for future costs.

• Link with accounting & ERP platforms – companies often need to export billing data and incorporate it more fully into their enterprise financial management systems.

Following key business wins and technology product improvement, EverythingBenefits recently opened a 17,000 sq-ft headquarters in New Providence, New Jersey.

Furthermore, the company has taken a thought leadership position in the industry, releasing its latest eBook, “Get Your Escalating Benefits Costs Under Control,” to help business better understand, measure and manage their benefits and associated costs.

“Four years ago, Dan, Dmitry, Bill and I were united by our passion to build great benefits tech that would help people lead more meaningful lives,” said Rachel Lyubovitzky, Chief Executive Officer at EverythingBenefits. “As we celebrate our fourth anniversary, we reflect on our growth and the successes we have experienced since our founding days, and remain committed to continue our mission, to better the lives of our customers and their employees.”

Rachel is no stranger to successful technology companies in New Jersey. She is an accomplished serial entrepreneur with leadership experience that spans the full spectrum of strategic and tactical activities in the software technology industry. She’s an investor in TechStars, 2048 Ventures and several other tech innovation ventures. She also holds a Wharton Executive MBA and a Brandeis Computer Science degree.

The team isn’t done leaving its mark on the industry either. EverythingBenefits is close to accouncing a major addition to their suite which will transform the playing field for the entire industry. Stay tuned! I’m sure we’ll see continued changes to the benefit space over time and I’m confident we’ll see the team at EverythingBenefits continue to lead the way.

Spotlight Profile: Forefront Telecare Inc. Forefront Telecare, Behavioral Health Solution for Rural Americans, Completes $15 Million Growth Equity Funding Round. Company adds new investors, clients, and headquarters as part of growth plans.

Forefront Telecare, Inc. (Forefront), the leader in behavioral telehealth solutions for vulnerable seniors in rural communities across the United States, today announced that it added two new investors to a growth equity funding round. The investors, Tech Council Ventures and Boston Millennia Partners, join lead investor Spring Lake Equity Partners and the Ziegler Link●Age Fund in the round totaling $15 million. In addition, the company opened an office in Hamilton, New Jersey, to complement its California offices as it attracts leaders in healthcare, technology, data and analytics, and other functions.

“Serious problems including the shortage of psychiatrists nationwide, the lack of access to high- quality behavioral health options in rural communities, and the mental health crisis among older Americans point to the burning need for Forefront as a critical part of the healthcare ecosystem,” said Rob Rebak, Chief Executive Officer. “As we continue to expand, Forefront is pleased to add new client facilities for several of the nation’s largest healthcare services companies that offer

our technology- enabled solutions to rural hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, and other partners across 26 states.”

Rural America, Seniors Facing Behavioral Health CrisisAmerica’s psychiatrist shortage is well-documented and points to serious issues

for people living in low-access areas. For example, a recent study by Merritt Hawkins concluded that “the shortage of psychiatrists is an escalating crisis of more severity than shortages faced in virtually any other specialty.” Research published by the New American Economy found more than 60 percent of all counties in the United States, including 80 percent of all rural counties, do not have a single psychiatrist. The study also found that in rural counties just 590 psychiatrists serve more than 27 million Americans. Lastly, a troubling recent CDC report titled “The State of Mental Health and Aging in America” found that at least 20% of Americans over 55-years-old experience a mental health problem every year.

Investment in Scaling OperationsForefront plans to use this investment to grow its nationwide network of

The company’s new office in Hamilton, New Jersey will house senior management team members across several functional areas. Mr. Rebak has been a leader of multiple high growth,

health tech businesses and will attract proven and passionate talent who share in Forefront’s mission.

“Forefront’s ability to leverage technology and services to improve the capacity of psychiatrists to serve their patients will help bridge the gap between behavioral health provider supply and patient demand. We are encouraged to work with this talented team to solve a complex problem that affects millions of Americans,” said Frank Silva, Principal at Boston Millennia Partners.

About Forefront Telecare, Inc.Forefront is a pioneer and U.S. leader in the delivery of behavioral health services

Hu-manity.co Set to Transform Healthcare byBringing “Dark Data” into the Light with Patient Consent

It is rare that a simple announcement should have such a transformative impact on an industry, but that is exactly what happened on April 30th when Princeton, NJ based Hu-manity.co announced it is acquiring Brooklyn, NY based Betterpath Health.

Why Better Data Matters

Healthcare data sets are at best limited and at worse vague and inaccurate. The data works pretty well for marketing but when it comes to research and/or establishing a clinical trial… there is a lot to be desired. The data lacks depth as well as any meaningful connection between the patient (the human) and those doing the research.

A solution to this challenge would be transformational for the healthcare industry. It would mean a more streamlined research process with potential benefits ranging from higher cure rates to a reduction in the cost of medicine, while simultaneously increasing profits for pharmaceutical companies.

This is exactly what the pharmaceutical industry gains from Hu-manity.co’s acquisition of Betterpath. And, it can all happen with the patient in the center of this new data economy.

The History of ‘Dark Data’

What has eluded the healthcare system are the deep clinical datasets from hospitals, clinics, and laboratories which are often still on paper, behind fax machines, unstructured and referred to by Andreessen Horowitz’s general partner Vijay Pande, as healthcare’s “Dark Data.” This data would provide the context for a patient’s symptoms and help to give perspective for eventual diagnosis, treatments and prognosis.

Right now, up to 80% of all healthcare data remains shrouded in this darkness, inaccessible to patients, providers, and researchers. When an organization’s ability to collect data overwhelms its ability to analyze that data, it becomes hugely detrimental to the core essentials of the practice of medicine – innovating new treatment modalities and more effective drugs and diagnosing, treating and

Page 10: Amy Liao Richie Etwaru - EverythingBenefits

SPRING 2019 10 WWW.NJTC.ORG

curing patients. Researchers, pharmaceutical companies or doctors trying to draw conclusions from the limited amount of clinical data available is like trying to write a cogent book review after only reading 20% of the book. Turning dark data into ‘smart data’ would enable healthcare professionals to provide the meaningful context that is required in order to learn what work best, for whom, when and why.

For the past seven years, Betterpath has relentlessly focused on helping healthcare consumers coordinate their personal data by providing the tools to look at everyone’s healthcare data as an asset. The goal is to take on the enormous challenge of helping patients find a way to own their data and in the process increase the speed of research, diagnostics and treatment.

A Personal Story

This has been a personal mission for Matt Sinderbrand, CEO and co-founder of Betterpath. He experienced first-hand his sister’s struggle with accessing her own healthcare data while she battled Crohn’s disease, and as a result prioritized the training of Betterpath’s Lumos medical natural language understanding to learn more than 100,000 biomedical-terms, synonyms, relationships, and structured codes. In honor of his sister’s condition, the first disease vocabulary programmed was Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

An Acquisition where 1+1=3

By combining Betterpath’s innovative technologies with Hu-manity.co’s consent and authorization capabilities, not only will the dark data come into the light. but now the patient will be personally involved in the supply chain.

“The trust, track and trace of consent and authorization model that Hu-manity.co has brought to market has been what is missing in healthcare data from the inception,” says Sinderbrand. “The simple idea that we should put the consumer (the patient) into the center of the healthcare data supply chain with ownership rights literally at their fingertips is both powerful, and timely.”

As part of the acquisition, Sinderbrand will join Hu-manity.co as Senior Vice President, Chief Product Officer as well as a member of the Hu-manity.co board of directors.

“I’ve seen and evaluated technology for two decades. The Betterpath architecture, stack, and scalability is one of the best I have seen to date in healthcare data retrieval,” says Richie Etwaru, CEO of Hu-manity.co. “Matt is a first class citizen in the new cohort of healthcare data experts, he has learned more over the past four years while getting the technology ready than most of the healthcare venture community combined.”

The Betterpath technology core includes Amazon Web Services, React, Datomic, Docker, Cassandra, and Scala wrapped by fax automation, real time APIs, trained Optical Character Recognition, the NPI database, the Unified Medical Language System and a patented process of medical natural language training and understanding.

With this acquisition, Hu-manity.co adds two patents to its intellectual property portfolio and now operates an IRB approved observational research cohort that enables healthcare’s dark data to be used for FDA regulated clinical trials powering the discovery of transformational medicine.

Thriving Innovation Ecosystem & Networking Opportunities Attract Startups to Coworking Space at Bell Works

In 2017, TrueConnect founder Michael Glaicar was deciding whether to start his company in New York City or New Jersey. After touring Colab, Bell Work’s coworking space in Holmdel, he immediately knew that it would be a natural fit for his cloud-based software startup.

Among the things that impressed Glaicar was the magnitude of the innovation ecosystem forming at Bell Works. He noticed technology companies like iCIMS and WorkWave were flourishing at Bell Works and saw the potential for a fast-growing tech company to thrive in Monmouth County. The decision to locate at Bell Works was also based on his feeling that the impressive building and its resources would be valuable for recruiting talent, and the opportunity to network with entrepreneurs from a broad range of industries would be beneficial to his company’s growth.

Glaicar’s sentiments are echoed by many of the more than 170 entrepreneurs currently calling Colab home.

“We’ve experienced exponential growth in the past year as more people realize the value of the

‘metroburb’ work-shop-play environment taking shape at Bell Works,” said Colab Managing Director Sean Donohue. “We attribute this growth to word-of-mouth referrals and are optimistic that the New Jersey Economic Development Authority’s (NJEDA’s) NJ Ignite Program will help attract even more tenants to the coworking space.”

NJ Ignite supports technology and life sciences startups moving to collaborative workspaces by offering rent support, making lab and office space more affordable, and providing eligible startups with greater access to environments where they can work alongside other growing technology and life sciences companies. For incubators, accelerators, and coworking spaces, the program serves as a tool to help attract young businesses to their facilities, while encouraging the creation of new collaborative workspaces throughout the state. Colab is one of 14 collaborative workspaces currently approved by NJEDA to participate in NJ Ignite.

“Governor Murphy often talks about how forming technology hubs where entrepreneurs can gather and

collaborate is essential to reclaiming New Jersey’s role as a leader in innovation,” NJEDA CEO Tim Sullivan said. “The community of innovators at Bell Works is a representation of this model in action. Through NJ Ignite, we aim to make collaborative workspaces more accessible to New Jersey technology and life sciences companies in their earliest stages.”

TrueConnect was one of 22 companies that participated in New Jersey Founders & Funders this past November. New Jersey Founders & Funders enables early-stage businesses to meet with potential investors in 10-minute, one-on-one “speed dating” sessions to discuss strategy, business models, and funding opportunities. Each participating entrepreneur meets an average of six investors in curated one-on-one meetings during the event.

30 N.J. kids Co-Found an After School Company: Building the First-Ever Robotic Lemonade Stand

All great entrepreneurs start somewhere, but these 30 New Jersey kids, aged between 9 - 14 years old, of Rocket Club are getting an early start in start-ups. Giving the old lemonade stand a 21st-century squeeze, the babyfaced co-founders unveiled their new company, Robotic Lemonade Stand Co.,during the NJ Tech Council’s Venture Conference 2019. The stand is a first-of-its-kind self-autonomous lemonade mixer and dispenser that offers refreshing drinks at the click of a switch, both machine and company are built and operated by the kids.

The Hoboken headquartered Rocket Club, guided its members on all the aspects of entrepreneurism through its proprietary curriculum on how to conceptualize, build, operate, and scale a real successful business. The kids first conducted extensive market research on competitor brands, developed a financial model on profit per cup, created their ideal mix of the Robotic Lemonade, and built their very own robotic lemonade stand -- that comprises of a mixer and dispenser.

The stand is designed with a self-autonomous robotic arm that continuously stirs the lemonade mix when prompted via switch, then self-pours into a cup that manually self-rotates on a conveyor belt-styled contraption. The robot was built entirely using pieces of Lego MINDSTORM EV3 kits and other mechanical parts.

The young developers showcased their invention at this year’s NJ Tech Council’s Venture Conference, where they sold lemonade to VCs, investment bankers, and angel investors. The members accepted digital Point Of Sale transactions, where customers bought a cup for $1, with an option to donate any amount they wish. All profits were donated to St. Jude’s Research Hospital and Kode with Klossy.

“People think lemonade stands are a kid’s game. Well, that’s awesome, because drinks have a high-profit margin,” said Kayden Jones, who just turned 11 and is a Robotic Lemonade Co. Co-Founder and Rocket Club Member. The next step in the Robotic Lemonade business plan is to pinpoint potential locations for future expansion and explore merchandising opportunities.

The Robotic Lemonade Stand Company has already piqued the interest of Shark Tank’s Kevin O’Leary, Barbara Corcoran, and Daymond John. The trio congratulated the members on making history by filming personalized videos. “I think it is fantastic for kids to get involved in business as early as possible, and that’s why I want to give a huge shoutout for the Rocket Club members.” said Kevin O’Leary aka Mr. Wonderful.

“Entrepreneurs are crucial to a successful future

society because young people will have so many different careers. Their entrepreneurial skill sets will come in very handy as the digital economy changes everything. We are so impressed by Rocket Club and I look forward to getting my daughters involved as well!,” said James Barrood, President & CEO, NJ Tech Council.

“We knew our members would enjoy developing and coding the robotic lemonade stand, but we had no idea how excited they would be to do market research, design their own product, and discuss their company’s financials.” said Rocket Club’s Owner Alex Hodara. “We are blown away by what our members have done so far with Robotic Lemonade and we want to do whatever we can to connect them with industry leaders and push them to continue to hone these rare STEM & entrepreneurship skills.”

“We want Rocket Club members to graduate from our club with a network that is stronger than 99% of college graduates,” said Paulo Nunes, Director & President of Rocket Club. “Our members are proving to have very few limiting beliefs on what they can accomplish, leading to them to develop innovations beyond most people’s comprehension, all while networking with industry leaders. Today they are building the world’s first robotic lemonade stand, but who knows what they will accomplish by the time they reach high school.”
