RETHINK CHURCH. “RE” mean- ing to do again. “THINK” mean- ing to consider or ponder. So, to RETHINK CHURCH is to give the idea of Church a second (or third or fourth) thought. The United Methodist Church has issued a call to all member congregations to RETHINK CHURCH. It is a good call. It is a pragmatic prayer. It is to learn to work with God not be with God. You can check out more at RETHINKCHURCH.org. We at Pittsboro UMC want to heed the call. We do not want to miss out on the opportunity to join in refreshing our calling. God has chosen to make the Church His display of love, mercy, jus- tice, hope, and help. Wherever a church finds itself, there it is to be the presence of God. If we were to think of the community of Pittsboro as a living, breathing person it would have much the same needs as us – physical, social, emotional, & spiritual. God in all of His-tory has been concerned with the total wellness of persons. As such, the body of Christ, the Church is to be concerned with the total wellness of the commu- nity in which it finds itself. We have chosen May 16th as the date that we will join the move- ment of Methodists to RETHINK our calling in Pittsboro. Please note that we will NOT BE HOLDING normal worship services on that day. In the place of our normal worship we will be “Takin it to the Streets.” Many of us will go into the town and clean the place up making it beautiful. Others will be going to the homes of persons with care packages to let them know we care. Childcare will be provided. Please see the fol- lowing time frame and we hope you will join in the RETHINKing of CHURCH. We will be needing leaders for the work teams. Youth NewsA Note from Marianne…Goodbye is never easy. God joins us in community, brings us along side each other in life’s journey when our paths cross. The path I am on is once again leading me away from Indiana. My time here at Pittsboro United Methodist Church will come to an end on May 26. The last day of school will be my last day at PUMC.

Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your lives for these last few years. I will never forget you. I am thankful for my time here and all the experiences I have had with you. I will miss laughing, crying, discuss-ing, learning and praying with you. I will miss going to all your school activities, band, and sports. I will miss all the trips with crazy happen-ings (asthma attacks, strange odors, sleep talkers, the sound a rock makes on ice) and the games I tortured you with. Most of all I will miss you.

Shalom, Marianne

Volunteering...

There are many ways to be involved in the lives of youth...youth group, Sunday School, special events and service projects. Will you consider being a volunteer? You do not have to be a parent or have special skills to be a volunteer. Come with an open heart and open mind.

It all started in 2004, when a small group of women decided to travel to Bloomington, Illinois for a Conference called Hearts at Home. None of us really had any idea what to expect, but we were

excited to just get away and we hoped to learn something about God and get help in this profes-sion we call Motherhood. What we found was that we not only loved the Conference, we loved the time together, and so, we return again and again, not always with the same women, but always seeking to know what God has in store for us. We hope you will enjoy our reflections on the Hearts at Home Conference and that we might inspire you to join us for the next Conference on March 11-12, 2011!

Music for the Soul, by Christy Williams:

This was my 6th year attending Hearts at Home. Every year some-thing draws me in and speaks to me. This year the music of Christy Nockels was particularly powerful for me. Her music and singing is bold, passionate and worshipful.

Being a mom is so difficult and wears you down. Coming to this conference brings much needed renewal and refreshment from our busy and often mundane lives. This is why I’ve come year after year! Christy Nockels is a mother of three children herself and knows how much we as mothers need encouragement and refreshing of our souls. She did something that I have never before experienced – she asked us to all sit down and let her sing a song “Healing is in His Hands” as a blessing and prayer over us. Wow, was that powerful! It ministered to my empty, worn out places. Wouldn’t you, as a mom, like to be strengthened and encour-aged like that? It does take some plan-ning and effort to get away for a cou-ple of days, but it is SO worth it! I encourage you - no matter if you’re just starting out on this journey of motherhood or if you’ve been in the “trenches” for awhile – to check out Hearts at Home in 2011. And check out www.christynockels.com to learn more about this wonderful musi-cian!

We Are Not Alone, by Jennifer Mills

Have you ever looked at your friends, neighbors or relatives, amazed at how they seemed to keep it all together? Then you look at your own life and conclude that you must be the only one who loses your patience, has kids who don’t obey, or just can’t seem to keep up with the many family obligations. I know I have many times. The women at Hearts at Home share their many failures and weaknesses openly with us all. As I sat in room of other moms who laugh or cry at the same moments I did, I was comforted by the fact that I was not the only one. What a gift it is to learn from some-one who has already been down my road and can share things that helped her. We are called into fel-lowship for a reason—we need each other. When we share our doubts, wisdom, struggles and successes with others, we encourage and are encouraged ourselves.

Many times during our group ses-sions at Hearts at Home this year, I glanced over my shoulder at the nearly 5,000 women surrounding me. I could only imagine God’s smile at the site of us gathered to sing praise to Him, to encourage one another, and to strive to be the mothers God knows we can be.

It's all about the Bag, by Cathy Dickson.

This was my 7th year attending the Hearts at Home Conference. My first year at the Hearts Conference I learned that with registration comes a tote bag that matches the color

scheme/theme of the brochure and decorations for that year. Inside the bag you will find the Conference program, a pen, a package of Kleenex (which I assure you will come in handy) and some choco-late. My favorite bag is the bag we got our first year, brightly colored, sturdy with a zipper to keep all of our belongings safely inside. On

the side it says "Mom's Impacting Lives 24/7." So true, everything we do and say impacts the lives of our children. Looking at that bag when I use it reminds me of that reality.

There was once a transparent bag with colored circles on it. I didn't much like that bag, probably because I didn't want to carry a bag that allowed people to see what was inside, kind of the way we try to hide our true selves from others sometimes, a lot of times. I no lon-ger have this bag, but I remember it clearly, and the reason I decided to give it away. Maybe I should have kept that one to help me remember that we need to be more transparent and authentic.

I wasn't too impressed with the bag we received this year, flimsy nylon with no way to keep your belongings from tumbling out.

(Continued)*5

I found myself checking and dou-ble-checking to make sure I hadn't lost anything. The bag seemed vul-nerable, not safe like the sturdy zip-per bag I love so much. The theme this year was "Mom's the Word." The main sessions and Mom's Night Out focused on our words and how they can build up or tear down…sometimes tumbling out of our mouths when we speak with-out thinking only to hurt someone we love so very much. As I have continued to think about this year's bag and looked at it over the weeks since the Conference, I know if I put away my distaste with the style of this bag, that using it will help me remember to think about the words I use, checking and double-checking what I say before I say it so that nothing comes tumbling out.

While I don't really need all these bags, there are only 2 of the 7 I no longer have, the clear bag and another that I didn't much care for, but a friend who was unable to attend really liked, so I passed it along to her. I know it sounds strange to say that this Conference is "all about the bag" for me, but as much as the Conference speaks to me every year, the bags help remind me of lessons learned, fel-lowship with others and my need for God's grace each and every day.

SAVE THE DATE Family Game NightOn Friday, June 18th from 7-9 p.m., the Children’s Discipleship Team will offer children in Preschool through 5th Grade the opportunity to play games and share in fellowship with other families.
