Philosophy of TeachingYour future is your present
Your present is your past.
Your world shapes you
Your world judges you.
Your past changes you
Your past shapes you.
Your future will judge you
Your world judges your past.
The inside is the key
The outside is a result.
The surroundings are a mystery.
Propaganda, Proposition
With the right catalyst you grow
With the right growth you ignite.
You become the catalyst
And your present is your past
Their future is your present.

Bio Poems, Stomp and Mardi Gras Masks
When my time began with the students, I wanted to get to know them better. I also wanted them to know me better. We all created a bio poem which showed facts and pictures
about ourselves. They were very creative with theirs!! It really helped to build a respect between all of us.
During my time in fifth grade the students also were able to join a Stomp group after school. I have since heard many of my musicians when I am working late, but they sound great!
On Fat Tuesday the fifth grade learned about Mardi Gras in Language class. We talked about its history, how it has changed and how it was affected by Hurricane Katrina. We then
created and wrote about a Mardi Gras celebration of our own in Mountaintop. The students finished the lesson by making these wonderful masks to go with their writing!!
The Walden Project
The students learned about Robert Frost, Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Walt Whitman.
They were exposed to the biography of each author and several of their works. These works were used to help explain various themes in Language that help produce better writing.
The different groups explored books of the authors' writing and created a work of poetry or prose of their own with an illustration to present to the class.
The projects turned out wonderful!!
During the Spring of the 2007 and 2008 school years, I was co-director of the 5th and 6th grade play. I also specialized in working with the students to develop the scenery. Both “A Stone in the Road” and “Monster in the Closet” were a big success!
There are also some memories
from subbing that I never would have
expected but will surely never forget! The Red Hat Society and the Hoops for Hope are two
examples.
In the Spring of 2008, the food bank was running low on donations. I helped to arrange and carry out a can drive at Rice Elementary. The classroom with the largest amount of cans donated got to cut my hair for Locks of Love. Mrs. Geisler’s first grade
class did an amazing job and won the prize of being able to cut two donations from my hair, each more
than a foot long!
One of my favorite things to do outside of the classroom is coach field hockey. There is something special in each athlete that you may not get to see in a classroom. Athletics help a lot of students come out of their shell and find
themselves. In the summer of 2007, I left my job as the varsity assistant coach at Wilkes University to join Mrs. Gemski as an assistant for Crestwood. It has been an honor and privelege to work with her the past two seasons and I look forward
to learning as much as I can from her.
Final ThoughtsMore than to give information, a teacher needs to help guide a
student’s mind to think, and even beyond that, to help him shape his character. Giving information is easy. Forming a thinking mind is hard. And shaping a strong character is hardest of all, partly because it must be shapes mostly from within. Giving information is only the beginning of a teacher’s responsibility; the end is to stimulate, excite, motivate, life, challenge, inspire. -Irv Furman
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” -Marianne Williamson
