NOTES■■ Each block is made up of two

differently colored solids. Make your cutting choices accordingly.

■■ All seam allowances are 1/4". Press seam allowances to one side, alternating sides where seams intersect.

CUT THE FABRIC

1. From the Main fabrics, cut:

■— 120 Template (A) (2 of each color per block)

■— 120 Template (B) (2 of each color per block)

■— 240 31/8" × 31/8" squares (4 of each color per block)

2. From the Binding fabric, cut:

■— 6 strips 2" × WOF

MAKE THE BLOCKS

Each block is assembled from pieces of two different colors. Refer to the diagrams and photos for how the colors should be arranged within the blocks.

3. Fold one Template (A) and one Template (B) piece of a different color in half and press to mark the center point of the arc. Notch the center point. (figure 1)

4. Pin pieces right sides together starting with the pin in the center and at the ends and easing pieces together while adding more pins. (figure 2)

5. Stitch together along the pinned edge. (figure 3)

6. Press the seam allowances to one side. Trim block to measure 31/8" × 31/8". (figure 4)

7. Repeat Steps 3–6 to make a total of 4 sewn Template (A) and (B) units, two of each color combination for the block.

8. Pin one sewn unit and one 31/8" × 31/8" square the same color as the quarter-circles, right sides together, along the common edge. Stitch together. Pin a second sewn Template (A) and (B) unit (same color combination) to the opposite edge of the square, right sides together, and sew. Press seam allowances to one side.

9. Repeat Step 8 with the second set of sewn (A) and (B) sections and a 31/8" × 31/8" square the same color as the quarter-circles. (figure 5)

10. Referring to figure 6, pin and sew the remaining six 31/8" × 31/8" squares into 2 columns of 3, alternating colors. Press the seam allowances to opposite sides.

11. Pin and stitch rows of sewn sections together, one at a time, along common long edges. Press seams. (figure 7)

12. Repeat Steps 3–11 to make a total of 30 blocks.

I ’ve often thought that a pillow top pattern would make an interesting quilt, and

it turns out, it does, and the construction is quite simple. I created this version out

of solids in a variety of saturated hues, but it could work equally well and read as even

more graphic sewn in just two contrasting colors.

MATERIALSFinished Size 481/2" × 53"

■■ Main: Fat eighths or fat quarters of 20 different colored solids

■■ Backing: 3 yd coordinating quilting cotton

■■ Binding: 1/2 yd coordinating quilting cotton

OTHER SUPPLIES■■ Templates, downloadable:

■— Template (A)

■— Template (B)

■■ Batting, about 60" × 60"

■■ Handsewing needle

■■ Coordinating thread

■■ Rotary cutter, acrylic ruler, and self-healing matfigure 1

STITCH BLOCKS TOGETHER

13. Arrange the blocks in 5 rows of 6 blocks each as shown in the project photo.

14. Pin two adjacent blocks from one row right sides together along their common short edge. Stitch together. Press the seam allowances.

15. Pin the row’s third block to the sewn pair, right sides together, along the common short edge. Stitch together. Press seam allowances.

16. Continue pinning, sewing, and pressing blocks, one at a time, to create a row of 6 sewn blocks.

17. Repeat Steps 13–16 to sew a total of 5 rows.

18. Pin two rows, right sides together, along the common long edge, matching seams. Stitch together. Press seam allowances.

19. Pin a third row to the sewn rows, right sides together, along the common long edge, matching seams. Stitch together. Press seam allowances.

20. Continue pinning, stitching, and pressing rows to sewn section, one at a time, to create the finished quilt top.

FINISH THE QUILT

21. Cut the backing fabric into two 11/2-yd pieces and sew together to make a backing at least 54" × 59".

22. Working on a flat surface, layer the backing wrong side up, the batting, and the quilt top right side up. Baste the layers together.

23. Machine quilt as desired. The sample was machine quilted in concentric ovals starting in the center of each oval.

24. Trim the layers even.

25. Using diagonal seams, sew binding strips together. Bind as desired. (See Sewing Basics.)stitchindye.com
