Commander’s Corner Our goal to get this month’s Newsletter out before Mother’s Day and the Bal-loon Stampede. First off, I would like to thank Life member Roger McGee for submitting the photo of General Wainwright that appeared in last month’s AMVETS news. A great piece of history . As mentioned last month we will be voting on officers and installing them on the meeting of May 15th . We will also start the Honour Project on the week-end of the 18th. Please have your veteran friends, who wish to enjoy a flight around the valley, submit their names to me or Don Schack ASAP. Some of your Officers and one delegate from your post will be in Yakima that same weekend at the State Convention. If I'm thinking right it’s time to start planning of our Post Picnic. Last year we held it at Fort Walla Walla Park, section E, which worked out well for parking and restrooms. This year we look forward to not having the strong winds and rain that came up and called it to a quick halt last year, however it made pickup and clean up very fast. Hope to see you on the 15th. pot luck at 6 and post meeting at 7 p.m. Larry Cunnington, Post Commander Phone 525-1964 or 520-5372 [email protected]

Recently Peter Wainwright, a nephew of General Wainwright and the Wain-wright Family Historian, was invited to be the keynote speaker of the 71st An-niversary of the Fall of Bataan and Corregidor to be held on April 6, 2013 at the Filipino Community Center in Seattle. Peter glacially accepted the invitation and apparently his speech was well re-ceived by the association. His letter to the Association commander follows: Larry G. Cambroneron, BCSA&TF Commander Finally got around to opening my FedEx box of pictures, talk etc. and found a few added unexpected goodies: a lovely "thank you" plaque and two books by "Dolly". Thank you for the former, which I will hang with pride on the wall of my office alongside a somewhat similar one from my talk at the 100th. anniversary cele-bration of their organization by the Philippine Scouts. I'd love to be there to celebrate the 100th of your 'Survivors Association'. (116 isn't too much to ex-pect is it in this day and age?) What an honor and inspiration it was to visit with your three 90+ vets and their wives. Also please pass on my thanks to Ms. Castillo for her memories of the times there before, during and after WWII. The pre and post-war stories particu-larly will help me construct the framework within which the horrors of war tran-spired in the Philippines. I feel very touched by all the kindness you and your friends have shown me. Peter Wainwright Mr. Wainwright is a Life Member of Post #1111
