1 Important Safety Notes &Warnings

Equipment operation depends on properhandling, installation, and maintenance.Neglecting fundamental requirements maylead to injury of personnel, failure of theequipment and property damage.Safety as described in this instruction bookinvolves two conditions:

· Personal injury.

· Product or property damage.

1.1 Safety Notations Safety notations alert personnel topossible death, injury or property damagesituations. The safety notations appearbefore the step in which the conditionapplies. The one safety notice and threehazard levels notations are:

Personnel installing, operating, ormaintaining this equipment must havethorough knowledge of all applicable local,regional, industry, government, and OSHAsafety procedures as well as commonlyaccepted safe working practices. Personnelworking in or around this equipment mustalso exhibit common sense and goodjudgment regarding the potential hazards forthemselves and other personnel in the area.These instructions are intended for use byfully qualified personnel and are not asubstitute for adequate training, experienceand supervision.

Should clarification or additional informationbe required, refer the matter to your nearestABB Sales office.

2 Introduction

2.1 General InstructionsRead these instructions carefully beforeinstallation and use as a guide duringinstallation and initial operation. Use ofthese instructions will facilitate properreceiving of the equipment and prolong itsuseful life.

WARNING“Warning” indicates a hazardoussituation that has some probability ofsevere injury and substantial propertydamage.

DANGER“Danger” indicates a hazardoussituation that has a high probability ofdeath, severe injury, and substantialproperty damage.

CAUTION“Caution” indicates a hazardoussituation that may result in minor ormoderate injury and/or propertydamage.

“NOTICE” indicates astatement of company policyas it relates to the safety ofpersonnel or protection ofproperty

2.2 Scope of InstructionsThe instructions are general in nature.They cover requirements for receiving,installation, and functional checks asapplied to ADVAC and AMVAC mediumvoltage circuit breakers. These instruc-tions do not attempt to cover all possibleissues that may arise during receiving tocommissioning of breakers.

Information on particular installationsappears in the following:

· Bills of Materials that list electricaldevices and equipment.

· Single line drawings showing powerconnections.

· Elementary and schematicdiagrams.

· Connection diagrams

3 Inspection, Handling andStorage

3.1 InspectionBefore shipment, the equipment isinspected and marked with its rating.Breakers are shipped in the open anddischarged condition in separate crates.Upon receipt of the equipment, use thebreaker commissioning check list in theback of this document to examine theshipment for damage or missingcomponents. Follow the proceduresoutlined in the next section.

3.2 HandlingTransport breakers upright using properlifting equipment. Take the high center ofgravity into account. Carry out loadingoperations only when it has been ensuredthat all precautionary measures to protectpersonnel and materials have been takeninto consideration.

3.3 StorageFor circuit breakers, store upright in theiroriginal shipping carton oriented asindicated on the shipping crates. Seebreaker installation and operation manualfor details on breaker storage.

4 Procedures

4.1 Receiving inspectionInspect shipping crate for damages, andnote condition of tip & tell if equipped. Checkthe contents against the packing list beforediscarding any packing material. Check theconsignment for completeness and lack ofany damage (e.g. moisture and itsdetrimental effects). In case of doubt, thepacking must be opened and then properlyresealed, when intermediate storage isnecessary. If any quantities are short, ordefects or transport damage is noted, thesemust be documented on the respectiveshipping document. Notify ABB and thecarrier at once of any discrepancies. If thereis damage from improper handling, file aclaim for damages at once with the carrierand notify ABB.

Remove crate by lifting box off of shippingpallet (Figure 4.2). Remove plastic bag frombreaker if covered. Remove both clampscrews from pallet (Figure 4.3). Insure thatbreaker is in the open and discharged stateby verifying the indictor position on the frontof breaker. Inspect the breaker according tothe breaker check list for damage. It isrecommended that the breaker isphotographed from all sides with the ratinglabel ledge able.

4.2 Truck mounting

WARNING· Always follow safe work practices

when lifting the circuit breakers toprotect the safety of personnel andequipment.

· Always inspect lifting hook for signs ofwear or damage before use.

· Do not use a lifting hook that isdamaged or worn.

· The lifting device should be suitablyrated for lifting the circuit breakerload.

· The lifting hook IS NOT to be used forinsertion of drawout circuit breakersinto switchgear compartments.

· The lifting hook IS NOT to be used asthe sole means of support whenservicing the circuit breaker.

Always insure floor is clear ofdebris before lowering breakeronto floor.Always be careful of breakersecondary plugs while movingbreaker on the floor.Never roll drawout breakeracross uneven surfaces.

1. Remove breaker from shippingpallet using lifting angles providedon the back of the module (Figure 4.4).

2. Lower the breaker on to the floor.With the lift truck platform at groundlevel and the foot brake engaged(Figure 4.7).

3. Push the interlock release handles(Figure 4.10) on the breaker inwardand roll the breaker onto the lift truckfacing toward the truck (Figure 4.12). Itmay be necessary to use the rackinghandle to rotate the racking screwslightly left or right to free up the truckhandles (Figure 4.8).

Lifting hook: Attach one lifting hook toeach side of the circuit breaker’s liftingangles.

4. Roll completely onto the platformuntil the breaker locking tabs (Figure4.9) engage the breaker interlock slot.(Figure 4.11)

4.3 Functional TestFor operation, component identification andlocations refer to the breaker IB providedwith the breaker. ADVAC breakers refer toIB 1VAL050503-MB, AMVAC breakers referto IB 1VAL050601-MB.

With the circuit breaker either on the flooror on a suitable work surface. Use thebreaker IB and the commissioningchecklist in the back of this document torecord any deficiencies.

Check breaker truck:

a. Truck handles move inwardwith little resistance andspring back outward (Figure

4.10).b. Racking screw release lever

moves down with littleresistance and returns upwhen released (Figure 4.8).

c. Wheels are parallel with truck

and rotate freely.

Check breaker manual operation:

a. Perform a manual chargeinsuring that charge indicatorchanges state.

b. Perform a manual closeoperation. (ADVAC only) Andinsure closed indicator isshown.

c. Perform a manual openoperation. (ADVAC only) Noteif there are any deficienciesduring the operations.

Check the breaker’s secondary powerrequirements listed on the front label andinsure that the breaker is of the correctcontrol power of the supplying equipmentfor the following tests (Figure 4.1).

Apply power to the breaker using a breakertest cabinet (Figure 4.14) or a Switchgearumbilical cable.

Note: Plug P1 (Figure 4.6) is toward thecenter of breaker.

a. Breaker charges andindicates “Charged” or“Ready” in less than 8seconds.

b. Perform a local Close byusing the Close push buttonon breaker.

c. Perform a local Open by usingthe Open push button onbreaker.

d. Perform a remote Close byusing the Close push buttonon the test cabinet or gear.

e. Perform a remote Open byusing the Open push buttonon the test cabinet or gear.

f. If breaker is supplied with UVclose the breaker and insurethat the breaker opens whenpower is removed.

4.4 Primary Circuit Test

The primary circuit of the breaker has beentested prior to shipment. Retesting prior toenergization will insure no internaltransportation damages have occurred.Verification of vacuum can be performed bya low-frequency AC withstand test.Additional a contact resistance testl byperforming a contact resistance test isrecommended.

To verify the integrity of the vacuuminterrupters perform the following low-frequency withstand voltage test:

1. Open the breaker (no control powersupplied to breaker)

a. Connect the high potential lead toone terminal.

b. Ground the remaining 5 terminalsand breaker frame.

2. Start machine with output potential at 0(zero) VAC

3. Increase the potential to the requiredvoltage (Figure 4.15)

4. Hold for one minute

5. Decrease potential to 0 (zero) and turnoff machine

6. Repeat for the remaining 5 terminals

A successful withstand indicatessatisfactory vacuum integrity. Removepower from the breaker.

Contact resistance is measure at the factoryaccording to the ANSI 37.09 using a 200Aµohm meter. This DC resistance test shouldbe performed after each fault the primarycircuit, from terminal to terminal of eachpole unit, in the close position shall bemeasured with at least 100 A of dc currentflowing in the circuit and shall not exceedthe limit set for the rating of the circuitbreaker by the manufacturer.

Remove lifting angles from breaker.

Note: Breaker will not fully rack in with liftingangles installed.

CAUTIONHigh voltage applied acrossan open gap in a vacuum canproduce X-radiation. Whenthe breaker is fully open thecontact spacing is such thatwhen tested with the voltagesspecified, X-radiation at onemeter is below the level ofconcern. A danger couldexist at voltages above thedielectric test voltage orreduced contact spacingcaused by a major internalmechanical failure of thebreaker.

Cell Inspection

Before inserting a breaker intoa module, remove foreignobjects, tools and debris, orobstructions from inside themodule.

Prior to first insertion of breaker into cell, itis important to inspect the breaker celloperating components listed in (Figure 4.16).

All circuit breakers of like rating areinterchangeable

Circuit breakers have three positions in thehousing.

1. The DISCONNECT position disengagesthe main disconnecting devices, and thecontrol contacts on the breaker. Theyare a safe distance from the stationarypart of the device located on thehousings.

2. The TEST position disengages the maindisconnecting devices, and engages thecontrol contacts. This position allowsoperation of the circuit breaker fortesting.

3. The CONNECTED position engages themain and control disconnecting deviceson the breaker.

Mechanical interlocks prevent moving acircuit breaker from one position to anotherunless the circuit breaker is open. Theinterlocks also prevent closing of thebreaker between positions.

DANGERInsure that all power to the cell has beenremoved and proper lock-out tag-outprocedures have been performed priorto cell inspection.

4.5 Cell Insertion

1. With the breaker on the lift truck (Figure

4.12).

2. Open the breaker cell door completely(Figure 4.16).

3. Raise the lift truck platform by pumpingthe foot pedal (Figure 4.17). Release thefoot brake and push the lift truck towardsthe breaker cell.

4. Align the locking tabs (Figure 4.11) of thelift-truck with the lift truck holding slots(Figure 4.18) in the front of the frame.Adjust the lift-truck to the frame toengage the locking tabs with the slots.Adjust the truck platform either bymoving up using lift truck foot pedals orlowering the platform with the lift truckcontrol valve (Figure 4.19) to lock thelocking tabs in the lift truck holding slot.The truck platform should be horizontaland aligned with the rails in the module.Try pulling the lift truck away from theframe. The locking tabs should be setfirmly in place. Set the foot brake.

5. Release the circuit breaker from the lifttruck by pulling both module interlockrelease handles toward the center of theunit simultaneously (Figure 4.10).

6. Push the circuit breaker straight into themodule. Keep the unit level as possible.Do not raise or lift the circuit breaker.

7. Align the breaker locking tabs (Figure

4.11) with the module interlock slots(Figure 4.18).

8. Engage the breaker locking tabs byreturning the handles to their outwardposition.

9. Verify that the handles are fully outwardand the breaker locking tabs haveengaged fully into the module interlockslots.Note: The unit will not rack into the TESTposition if the Module Interlock Tabs are notproperly engaged with the frame.

10. Disengage the lift-truck by raising theplatform via the foot pedal, release thefoot brake, and move it away from theframe. The circuit breaker is now in theDISCONNECTED position ( Figure 4.21).

11. Close and secure the breakercompartment door.

4.6 Racking, DISCONNECT to TESTTo rack from the DISCONNECTED positionto the TEST Position: Press down on theracking release handle on the breakercompartment door (Figure 4.22).

1. Engage the racking screw on thebreaker with the racking tool and rotateclockwise (CW).

2. Release the handle and continue to rackthe unit by rotating the racking toolclockwise until the racking screw stops,approximately 4 turns. The breaker isnow in the TEST position and will beginto charge.

3. Verification can be made by confirmingthe position indicator on the right sidebreaker rail shows TEST (Figure 4.23).

Note: On some ABB Switchgear, the Breaker“Open” indicating light serves both as thebreaker is “Open” and that the breaker hasreached either the “Test” or “Connect” positionduring racking. This is due to the breaker’s TOC“pin monitor” contact being in series with thebreaker “Open” indicating light circuit. The pinmonitor is only closed when the breaker is inone of the three racking positions “Disconnect”,“Test” and “Connect” and the racking pin hasfully seated into position.

4.7 In Cell Testing

Functional testing of the breaker should beperformed in the test position prior toracking breaker into the CONNECTEDposition.

1. Insure breaker is charged by the visualcharged flag on the front of the breaker.If monitoring of breaker READY signal isbeing performed, insure breaker READYsignal is active.

2. Perform a close of the breaker usingeither or both the manual closing switchon the gear or associated breaker relay.Check that the breaker is closed andappropriate indicating lights are active.

3. Insure breaker charges and returns toREADY status.

4. Perform a open of the breaker usingeither or both the manual opening switchon the gear or associated breaker relay.Check that the breaker is open andappropriate indicating lights are active.

4.8 Racking, TEST to CONNECT

To rack from the TEST position to theCONNECTED position:

5. Press down on the Racking ReleaseHandle on the breaker compartmentdoor.

6. Engage the racking screw with theRacking Tool and rotate clockwise (CW)approximately 21 turns.

7. Release the handle and continue to rackthe unit by rotating the racking toolclockwise. A slight increase inresistance indicates that the unit isengaging the primary contacts. Whenthe racking screw stops, the breaker isnow in the CONNECTED position.

8. Verification can be made by confirmingthe position indicator on the right sidebreaker rail shows CONNECTED (Figure

4.24).

4.9 Racking, CONNECT to TEST

To rack from the CONNECT position to theTEST position:

1. The breaker must be OPEN beforeproceeding to the next step.

2. Press down on the racking releasehandle.

3. Engage the racking screw with theracking tool and rotate counterclockwise(CCW). Release the handle andcontinue to rotate counterclockwise,from the CONNECTED position into theTEST position.

4.10 Racking, TEST to DISCONNECTTo rack from the TEST position to theDISCONNECTED position:

1. Press down on the racking releasehandle.

2. Engage the racking screw with theracking tool and rotate counterclockwise(CCW). Release the handle andcontinue rotating counterclockwise, fromthe TEST position into theDISCONNECTED position.

4.11 Removal

Removal from the DISCONNECTED posi-tion with a lift truck.

1. Open the breaker compartment door.

2. For ADVAC breakers perform a manualclose and open operation to dischargethe stored energy. Note: if equipped withUV you must disable the UV prior todischarging the breaker.

3. Align the locking tabs of the lift truck withthe lift truck holding slots in the front ofthe frame. Push the lift truck to theframe to engage the locking tabs withthe compartment. Lower the truckplatform slightly to lock in place. Thetruck platform should be horizontal andaligned with the rails in thecompartment. Set the lift truck footbrake. Try pulling the lift truck away fromthe frame. The locking tabs should beset firmly in place and the brake set.

4. Release the circuit breaker from thecompartment by pulling the interlockrelease handles toward the center of theunit.

5. Pull the drawout unit straight onto the lifttruck platform. Keep the unit level aspossible.

6. Align the breaker interlock tabs with thelift truck slots. Engage the breakerinterlock tabs by returning the handles totheir outward position.

7. Verify that the handles are fully outwardand the breaker interlock tabs are in thelift truck slots.

WARNINGDo not attempt to remove the breakerfrom the circuit breaker compartmentwithout the required ramp, dolly or lifttruck

8. Raise the lift truck platform todisengage the lift truck locking tabs,release the foot brake and pull the lifttruck away from the frame.

The breaker interlock tabsmust engage the slots in thelift truck platform beforereleasing the foot-brakeand moving the lift truck.Lower the lift truck platformbefore transporting draw-out modules from upperpositions with the lift-truck.

Standard Construction

4.12 Standard Color

The standard paint color is ANSI #61. Thisfinish is electro-static powder paint appliedover an iron phosphate coating. Thisprocess achieves a smooth, uniform paintfinish that conforms to all UL requirements.

4.13 Galvanized Steel FrameConstruction

Unpainted parts are made of galvanizedsteel. Galvanized steel greatly exceeds thepaint qualifications of ANSI C37.20.2Section 5.2.8.

4.14 Primary Disconnect AssembliesCircuit breaker primary disconnects consistprimarily of a circle of fingers compressedby a garter spring. The springs are outsidethe current path. The fingers can beinspected by withdrawing the unit. Theprimary contacts are high pressure, self-aligning devices. All parts are plated toreduce electrical resistance.

4.15 Secondary Disconnecting DevicesCircuit breakers have self-aligningdisconnects sized for the required current.They make contact in the CONNECTEDand TEST positions, without the need for atest jumper (see Figure 27).

4.16 Ground Bus ContactsThe ground bus contacts are under thecircuit breakers. The circuit breakers aregrounded in all positions (see Figure 27).

5 24 Month (Two Year)Inspection

In addition to the annual inspection, performthe following recommended inspection andmaintenance at 24 month (two year)intervals, or sooner, if required by localconditions or regulations.

1. Clean the circuit breaker stationaryprimary contacts. Refer to CircuitBreaker Installation Operation andMaintenance Manual 1VAL050502-MBfor detailed instructions.

2. Inspect secondary wiring bundles forsigns of discoloration because of heat orchafing. Check for cracked or embrittledinsulation. Replace wire wheneverunsure.

3. Inspect primary insulation system foraccumulated contamination. Cleaninsulation with a dry cloth, dry-air,vacuum, or if necessary with an OSHAapproved solvent.

4. Check the calibration of protectiverelays.

5. Follow the recommendations of anyindividual device instructions furnishedfor maintenance of the device.

8 Methods of Disposal

Disposal can be carried out in a manner ofways depending upon material of product.Below is the recommended method ofdisposal for various raw materials.

The duty of ABB is to facilitate subsequentrecycling or disposal at the end of productlife. During disposal of the product, it isalways necessary to act in accordance withlocal legal requirements in force.
