The name of ‘Hope, Love and Fortune’ (Hoop, Liefde en Fortuin) for this urban complex is derived from the three windmills that once stood here. The docklands and many sorts of infrastructure together form the setting for a mixture of housing profiles. This large and differentiated programme led in this context to a varied project with four different housing environments, each with a characteristic scale and a multiple identity.Between an office building and a wellfare / daycare centre, three blocks with social housing are situated along the Borneolaan. In the eastern block are apartments for the elderly with front door access via a gallery, combined with the wellfare centre. A new type of urban houses is found in the other two blocks, which are occupied by people with different multicultural backgrounds and therefore have their own independent access. On the north side, alongside the Rietlandenpark the blocks are con-nected: underground by a double parking garage and above bridged by an imposingly rising volume. This volume on the park side with privately owned property marks the building in the direction of the Piet Hein Tunnel. Dynamically by state and relief, but above all light and abstract, this facade of Norwegian marble works like a veil, forming a filter between the individuality of the houses and the public space of the park.Artist Willem Oorebeek played with the depth of the facade by using black ceramic dots. Besides “layering” and visual depth, is the design motif formed by stairs. They are to be found at the scale of the organi-zation of the plan and section, expressed by balconies and gallery’s as well in materialization and detailing of glass, concrete and bricks.
