Introduction

Due to the shortage of dentists in post war era in Taiwan, Dr. Ju-Chuan Chou

founded Chung Shan Dental Junior College, antecedent of Chung Shan Medical

University, in 1960 with the purpose of training dentists. The school was named

after Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, alias Chung-Shan, in recognition of his patriotism. The

demand for the institute to be elevated to the college level was growing with the

time. After much effort and program enforcement, in 1977, our school was granted

by the Ministry of Education to advance to Chung Shan Medical and Dental College.

Yet, we kept progressing and expanding. In 2001, the institute was reorganized as

Chung Shan Medical University (CSMU).

For the past 50 years, Chung Shan has

educated numerous outstanding graduates.

They devoted mostly to the medical care for

societies all over the world. Many of our alumni

also played vital roles in various leadership,

like the Director of Department of Health in

Executive Yuan, the Mayor of Kaohsiung City,

key cabinet members, Members of Parliament,

and chairs in the related fields of medicine and

dentistry. Nowadays CSMU still dedicates to

nurturing future doctors and taking its place in

contributing to community.

a Brief

medical quality is ranked

number three worldwide and

number one in Asia. With human

resource of high quality and

advanced medical equipment, it

is no wonder that Taiwanese

people take pride in our

medicine provided. Moreover,

with our own health insurance

Introduction to Taiwan’s Health Insurance

However, every system has its pros and cons;

everything has two sides. There are also some

difficulties we confront and struggle to solve,

such as overworking of medical workers, abusing

of medical resources and financial balance etc.

During and after the lecture given by Doctor Tsai,

Ming-Che, the chairman of medicine department

of Chung Shan Medical University and a very

experienced clinical surgeon, everyone is

ensured not only to reflect on Taiwan’s medical

condition and system but also to ponder on how to

create a better environment for both medical

workers and patients beyond borders.

Chinese medicine is originated in mainland

China from over thousands years ago.

Nowadays, Chinese medicine is still

practiced among Chinese society and some

westerners, though it is regarded as the

third oldest medicine system in the world,

with the first and the second being Egyptian

and Babylonian medicine. On contrary to

modern medicine, traditional Chinese

medicine holds a different perspective of

human body. It values long term nursing to

keep balance of yin and yang and also views

human body as a unity but not separately as

organs.

Page 12: AMSEP Taiwan - Chung Shan Medical University

During Chinese medicine 101 we will have a

fundamental course on some most famous

therapies of Chinese medicine, which are

Acupuncture, Cupping and Acupoint. After

the courses, we will also get to practice by

ourselves to further experience these age-old

therapies. As a result of emphasis on long

term nursing, there is a lot of usage of Chines

herbs in Chinese medicine. In Chinese herbs

cuisine cooking course, we will learn to cook

a popular Chinese herb dish known for high

nutrition and is good for your health. Last but

not least, there will going to be an ointment

making course where we learn to make

traditional Chinese ointment to relief muscle

ache.

C.Chung Shan Hospital Tour

One of the features of medical universities in Taiwan is that almost every

school has its own hospital and normally alongside campus. This feature

allows medical students to learn and obtain both academic knowledge

and clinical skills. Luckily, Chung Shan Medical University is one of those

schools. Established in 1966, Chung Shan University Hospital is now one

of the biggest hospitals in Taichung city and holds some most advanced

medical equipment. In the hospital tour, we will also be introduced to one

of the world’s most progressive technology, the Da Vinci Surgical System.

It is famous for its various advantages compared to traditional surgery,

including a smaller cut, lower infection rate, shorter extension of average

surgery time, less occurrence of complications etc. We will also get the

chance to actually watch it operating during a surgery

Community Service

Sunshine Association

Established about 20 years ago, Sunshine Association

is a nonprofit, nongovernment association dedicated

to helping women and children in need, especially

those in single-parent families, aboriginal families, and

immigrant families. Sunshine Association provides a

variety of different programs from welfare

consultation, juvenile counseling to socially vulnerable

family supporting program and more. Therefore, a

stable fund resource is very vital.

Page 19: AMSEP Taiwan - Chung Shan Medical University

This year, the association comes up with an idea

to raise fund by selling mantao, a very common

Chinese bun in Taiwan. In the community program,

we will help the association to make mantoa to sell

it for charity. Aside from that, we may also try the

household traditional staple by buying some

ourselves.
