Every individual at The Foundation for Revitalisation of Local Health Traditions (FRLHT) understands the importance of traditional systems in a rapidly changing India, and is committed to sharing their knowledge and building awareness.

Powered by like-minded individuals and supported by the Indian government at every level, this organisation documents, conserves, assesses and revives India’s native medicinal plants.

The Ministry of Science & Technology recognises FRLHT as a scientific and research organisation. The Ministry of Environment and Forests has designated FRLHT a National Centre of Excellence for medicinal plants and traditional knowledge.

The Foundation for Revitalisation of Local Health Traditions (FRLHT) is a registered Public Trust and Charitable Society in Bangalore.



❉ FRLHT coordinates projects for the conservation of medicinal plants in 12 states in India.

❉ Under the in situ component of this project a network of 87 Medicinal Plant Conservation Areas (MPCAs) and 6 Medicinal Plant Development Areas (MPDAs), covering a wide range of ecological diversity and altitude ranges, have been set up.

❉ The ex situ conservation programme comprises the establishment of a chain of 15 ethno-medicinal forest gardens called Medicinal Plant Conservation Parks (MPCPs).

Towards saving India's traditional medical heritage, FRLHT initiated a programme for conservation and the sustainable utilisation of medicinal plants.



❉ By recording local health traditions followed by specialised practitioners, including bone-setters, mid-wives (tai), visha vaidya (antidotes to poisons), and veetu vaidya (home remedies).

❉ By assessing community knowledge through a combination of Ayurveda, Siddha and Allopathy.

❉ Byvalidatingtraditionalpracticesandpromotingsafeandefficaciousones.

❉ By identifying potential areas for in situ and ex situ conservation.

❉ By gathering seeds from protected sources and replanting for community access.

❉ By promoting Home Herbal Gardens for primary health care and thereby ensuring health security.

1998FRLHT received the prestigious Norman Borlaug Awardforitscontributionstothisfield.

2002The ‘Medicinal Plants Programme’ in Peninsular India was one of the projects selected by the United Nations from around the globe for the Equator Initiative Prize. This prize was awarded in Johannesburg at the World Summit on Sustainable Development.

2003The Rosenthal Centre for Complementary & Alternative Medicine, in the Columbia University, NewYork,awardedFRLHTwithitsfirstawardfor‘International Cultural Stewardship’.

2007The Rotary Club of Bangalore chose Darshan Shankar, Founder Director, FRLHT, for the‘Citizen Extraordinaire’ award 2006.

Amruth Garden Introduction

In 2002, FRLHT set up Amruth Garden as a ‘Knowledge Park’, to provide a visual introduction to several hundred species of medicinal plants from various bio-geographical regions across India. Our aim: to create public awareness of the resources that fuel our local and traditional systems of medicine, and therefore continue their practice.

This Garden accommodates over 1000 native species, covering 350 genera and 110 families. It also houses over 300 species of in Hortus Malabaricus, recognised as one of the earliest records of traditional knowledge.



FRLHT's Amruth Garden has 382 species used in Ayurveda, 350 species used inSiddha system, 147 species used in Unani system, 67 species used in Homoeopathy,119 species used in Tibetan system and 494 species used in Folk medicine.

Amruth Garden is also linked to a world-class herbarium on medicinal plants, andissupervisedbyexperttaxonomistsfamiliarwiththefloraoftheWesternandEastern Ghats, North West and North East India.

FRLHT launched the Amruth Home Garden Programme in Bangalore in the year 2003.

This programme primarily involves a mosaic of carefully selected healing plants for the urbanpopulationasafirstresponsetoprimaryhealthcareneeds.

1 Makeathickbatterusinggramflour,chillipowder, asafoetida, salt and water. 2 Heat oil in a frying pan.3 Dip each leaf in the batter and drop into hot oil. 4 Fry on both sides till golden brown.

Nursery Introduction

In 2002 FRLHT established a nursery, when no such facility existed for medicinal plants. This is the only nursery that handles 200 species with authentic identity.

❉ The seedlings are raised and stored in the conventional way as well as using the root trainer technology.

❉ It is 100% organically developed.❉ The seedlings are maintained in different age groups for different planting

purposes. ❉ The nursery has mist chambers for propagation ❉ The nursery has shade houses for special indoor plants.
