Young Researchers Meet

School Highlights

IEEE PES Bangalore chapter had organized “Young Researchers Meet” on 17th December 2016 in

the campus. Students of B.Tech. and M.Tech. from different colleges, professional researchers from various

companies and faculty of Department of EEE, Amrita School of Engineering participated in the meet.

The session started with a welcome address by Dr. K. Deepa, Assistant Professor and Mentor of IEEE PES

and IAS joint student branch chapter, Amrita school of Engineering. The session was headed by Dr. Suresh

H. Jangamsetti, Professor & Senior Member of IEEE, Basaveshwara Engineering College, Bagalkot.

Dr. Suresh gave a brief idea on how to draft a technical paper, pre-requisites for writing a paper and how to

develop fundamentals in research tools. The next session was carried forward by the eminent speaker

Dr. Balaraman K., PRDC, Vice Chair of IEEE PES-Bangalore Chapter. He discussed about various

emerging trends for research in the field of Renewable Energy and Microgrid. He also guided the

participants about developing a research mind and emphasized on the importance of connecting with peers

through collaborative approach for the exchange of ideas.

The next session was taken by Dr. Manohar Singh, CPRI who gave a brief idea on “Protection

Requirement for Modern Power Delivery Systems”. He gave an overview of protection in DC Microgrids

and need for adaptive protection in micro-grid emphasizing the relation between penetration of renewable

energy and CTI. Later the session was continued by Dr. Hariram Satheesh, ABB & Dr. T. Ilamparithi,

OPAL-RT. They threw light on “Enabling Technologies for Power and Energy Sector - an overview”. Last

session was taken by Dr. Faraz from PRDC who gave insights on “PMU Related Research Opportunities”

He also discussed about layout of PDC in smart grid architecture. After these informative sessions by

speakers, a vigorous mentoring session was conducted to provide in person interaction to all the participants

with the speakers so that they can clarify their doubts. For the interactive session, seven panels were formed

covering various topics for discussions like power system reliability, power system operation, microgrids,

power electronics & drives and technical writing. The main crux of this mentoring session was to give a

broad prospective to researchers and to let them know that a research should not be confined to a small area

but it should cover each & every aspects of area of research.

The meet was concluded with vote of thanks by Dr. T. Ilamparithi, felicitation of the speakers by Ms. Mini

Sujith, Vice Chair, Department of EEE and Dr. K. Deepa, distribution of certificates to the participants by

Dr. Balaraman K. and Dr. Suresh and with a promise of doing these great events in near future.

The students participated in the Inter-Amrita

drama competition to qualify for the AIU

fest. Having participated in the Mime, Skit and One

Act Play Categories, the team emerged first in the

latter two, bringing laurels to the School and qualified

to represent the University in the South Zone Youth

Festival, which was held on December 18th 2016.

Amidst heavy competition, and a terse atmosphere,

the team won 1st position in the Skit and Elocution and

3rd position in the One-Act play and Debate, thus

qualifying for Nationals, scheduled in the month of

February 2017 in Maharashtra.

Amrita School of Engineering, Bengaluru

hosted the Asia - Amritapuri Multisite Regional Round

of the ACM Intercollegiate Programming Contest

(ICPC) on the 22nd and 23

rd of December 2016.

96 enthusiastic teams from reputed institutes like the

IITs, IISc., BITS, NITs, North South University

(Dhaka, Bangladesh) to name just a few, gathered at

the campus to compete in the most prestigious

International Coding Contest.

On the 22nd of December, a practice session was

conducted after the registration process, to help the

participants familiarise themselves with the coding

environment and other technical facilities provided.

The Inaugural ceremony commenced with the lighting

of the lamp by the dignitaries, followed by a welcome

address by Dr. T. S. B. Sudarshan, Chairman,

Department of Computer Science & Engineering. A

contest overview was given by Mr. Rajesh M., Asst.

Prof., Dept. of CSE which outlined the history and

evolution of the contest. He also gave the guidelines to

the contestants regarding the contest. The Chief

Guest, Mr. Ganesh Jayadevan, Pervacio Pvt. Ltd., in-

spired the audience with his short audio visual presen-

tation. Mr. G. Radhakrishnan, Vice Chair, Dept. of

CSE delivered the vote of thanks.

23rd December dawned bright for the 298 contestants

who set out to make their mark. Determination and

drive were visible on the contestants’ visages as they

sought to solve problems of increasing complexity.

The test culminated to a remarkable display of logic,

technical aptitude and teamwork.

A comprehensive discussion of the problems posed

and their solutions preceded the announcement of

results. The event concluded on a joyous note, with

the top 12 teams, who have qualified for the World

Finals, emerging from the Bengaluru Centre. The top

three teams were Faceless Men from IIT Kanpur,

Mobius Treap from IIIT Hyderabad and Rocket from

IIT Bombay respectively.
