Hearing in full colour! The Amplifonexperience –so much morethan getting ahearing aid

For Dr Chris Steele, wearing Amplifon Hearing Aids has been a revelation:‘It’s like the difference between seeing something in colour or in black and white,’he said, ‘the improvement in my hearing is incredible.’

amplifonLife 54 amplifonLife

‘It was also a chance to learn about thingslike the remote control, which I can havein my pocket and turn up the volume ifI’m in a noisy environment – evenadjusting my hearing aids separatelydepending where the sound is comingfrom. Another thing I found amazing isusing the phone, I might have it againstone ear, but I can have the sound cominginto both ears at the touch of a button.’

There was another check forDr Chris at four weeks, and then,as with every Amplifon customer, our recommendation is forregular aftercare appointmentsat six month intervals.

The reason for the regular aftercare – all ofwhich is absolutely free for Amplifoncustomers – is to ensure that your hearingaids are always working at optimum levels.

Dr Chris said: ‘People often don’t realisethey have a problem with their hearingbecause it creeps up on you sogradually – and it’s the same with yourhearing aids.

‘The Amplifon staff show you the basicsfor cleaning and maintaining them –changing the batteries (there’s a magneton the end of the cleaning brush whichmakes them really easy to pick up!) andkeeping the filters clear of wax – but, like a car, they need a regular ‘service’.And of course, your hearing changes overtime, so there may be adjustments to bemade anyway.

‘And an aftercare appointment is not justabout the hearing aids – the appointmentalso gives you an opportunity for athorough check of the health of your earsas well as the hearing system.’

At one of his regular aftercareappointments, Dr Chris also explored someof the devices he could use with his hearingaids, including the option to connectwirelessly with his TV and stereo. ‘I lovemusic and grew up listening to people likethe Rolling Stones and the Beatles. Now Ican be listening to a rock concert andhave the music ‘streamed’ straight intomy hearing aids without disturbing therest of the family. It’s awesome!’ he said.

Dr Chris has been delighted by theexperience and how his improvedhearing is impacting on his life.

He said: ‘I notice it particularly when thefamily are around with the kids – whenthere’s lots of background noise andpeople talking at the same time.Sometimes I even take my hearing aidsout as an experiment – just to remindmyself what it was like before I had them!’

He is particularly impressed with howsmall and discreet they are. Dr Chris isregularly on ITV’s ‘This Morning’programme, and says: ‘I have quiteshort hair, and people often say to me

‘Aren’t you supposed to be wearinghearing aids?,’ because they really can’ttell, not even the girls in the make-updepartment when they’re getting meready for the show!’

But Dr Chris is keen to stress that beingfitted with hearing aids isn’t the end ofthe story – to keep them working wellmeans regular aftercare visits.

He told amplifonLife: ‘When HearingAid Audiologist Lee Thompson fitted myhearing aids I was really impressed withthe time and care he took to make surethey were working properly and I wasgetting the most out of them.

‘For the first two weeks he set them at80%, explaining that I would need timeto ‘acclimatise’ to hearing that level ofsound again. At the next visit I was at100%, but he still wanted to see me afteranother two weeks to check how thehearing aids were working for me and tomake any adjustments I wanted.

HOUSEHOLD TIPS FROM THE 1940s AND 50s

amplifonLife 1110 amplifonLife

THESE days welive in a throwawaysociety – if somethingstarts looking a littleworn, or stops working, the solution is usuallyto put it in the bin andbuy another one.

But remember the days when youused to call out the TV repairman? Or sit darning that hole inyour socks?

Back in the post-war years, it was verymuch a make-do-and-mend society.Nothing was thrown away and peoplewould go to astonishing lengths to fixthings or make things last – everydayproblems were solved with a bit ofhomespun ingenuity.

Now a little booklet from that erahas given a fascinating glimpse intothe way we were. Many of the tipsit gives still hold good today.

The booklet was published bya local evening newspaper, probably in the late 1940s orearly 50s and sold for one shilling (5p).

It was packed with handy householdhints, sent in to the paper by readers inresponse to a regular feature called‘Take a Tip’.

These ranged from how to clean a vacuumflask easily, to using nut kernels to removescratches from polished woods.

A copy of the booklet was discovered byMalcolm Chapman, from Hazel Grove inGreater Manchester, when he wasclearing out his late mother’s house. Malcolm, 64, said: ‘My mother was verycareful not to waste anything and lovedreading advice on how to make thingsgo further.

‘I have no idea when it was published –but so many of the suggestions are to dowith making things last, and the bookletreally shows the way that people usedto live.’

One reader advises on how to repairpillow cases that are getting threadbareby sewing in old handkerchiefs, anothertells how to prevent the gilton handbags from gettingtarnished and there aredozens of suggestions onhow to remove stainsfrom everything ratherthan just throw the item away.

Malcolm added: ‘I’ve tried a few of thetips out myself and I have been surprisedto find how well they work.’

Here are just a few of the tips thatappear – but please note, we have nottested them all, so if you try them, you do so at your own risk!

IN THE KITCHEN

Cabbage smellWho can stand the smell of cabbageor cauliflower cooking? To stop thesmell pervading the whole house, popin the pan (on top of the cookingvegetables) a dry crust of bread, thenput the lid on top.

Flask cleanser For an easy and effective way of cleaninga vacuum flask, put a teaspoonful ofdenture powder into the flask, fill up withhot water, and leave to stand overnight.Repeat once a week.

GENERAL HOUSEHOLD

All tied up Ever tied up a parceland found the stringtoo loose? Do itthis way: wet thestring first and thentie up the parcel. It will stay securelytied up, becausethe string shrinksas it dries.

Just like new Tall glass flower vases can often becomevery dirty and discoloured at the base andare difficult to clean, especially if narrow.Don’t throw the vase away – put a smallquantity of any household bleach and hotwater into the bottom, allow to standfor a little while and then rinse well.

Nutty surfaceTo remove scratchesfrom most polishedwoods, crack either awalnut or a brazil nut, rub thekernel gently over the mark, and watch itdisappear! Wipe over with a soft dusterto remove any surplus oil.

Gilt varnish If you buy a handbag with a gilt frame,go over it with a clear nail varnish. This prevents tarnishing, so the handbagalways looks as new and will last longer.

Garaging a carCut a hole through an old tennis ball andthread string through it. Then suspend theball on the string from the rafters or theroof of the garage so that the suspendedball strikes the windscreen at preciselythe best point for you to stop the car.

Bob’s your uncle! When cleaning paint splashes fromwindow panes after decorating, try usinga penny or five pence piece (halfpenny ora shilling piece as detailed in the original!)flat upon the glass. This removes thepaint very quickly without scratchingand saves those thumb nails!

Handy jarsSave a number of equal-sized glass jarswith screw tops for storing nails, screwsand other small articles, but instead ofstanding them on the shelves, screw eachlid to the underneath of the shelf. The jarscrews back on to its lid when not in use.

REMOVING STAINS

Steam it!Here is a tip to interest all suede-jacketowners. If your jacket has gone shiny, you can rescue it by hanging it in frontof a boiling kettle so that the steampenetrates the suede. Then take a softbrush and brush the jacket gently. You willfind that your jacket comes up like new.

Dose of talcTo remove grease stains on fabric, sprinklea good coating of talcum powder overeach stain. Leave it on for about tenminutes and then cover it with brownpaper. Press this with a not-too-hot ironand brush off the surplus powder and allthe stains should have gone.

Subtle stainsIf when washing clothes you accidentlyput a coloured article next to a whiteone, thus staining it, the stain caneasily be removed by this method:spread a thin layer of petroleum jelly(Vaseline) over the stain and boil fora few minutes. The stain shouldcompletely disappear!

Heat stain cure One teaspoonful of salt mixedwith olive oil will remove a heatstain from a polished table if itis left on for an hour or two.Clean it off and polish untilthe table gleams.

When Dorothy Huson, now in hernineties, went into Amplifon’sAltrincham branch for a routinehearing test, she had no idea howmuch it would change her life...It had taken her daughter and son-in-law, Sue andLaurie Spicer, years to persuade her to have a hearingtest as she had been told some years before that shehad no hearing in her left ear, so she thought there wasno point in even trying to improve on her existinghearing aids.

Son-in-law Laurie explained: ‘Having seen the Amplifonadvertising in the press, we thought that surely somethingcould be done or at least why not give it a try. However, wedidn’t actually tell her where we were going until wearrived at the appointment – that way she hadn’t reallygot time to say no!

‘But it couldn’t have gone better. I could hardly believe itwhen Chris Lambert, the Hearing Aid Audiologist, firstput the aid into Dorothy’s left ear. She instantly askedwhat the noise was – and we realised it was an air coolernext to her, something she would simply never havebeen able to hear before.

If you experience trouble hearing atwork, it can be difficult to perform yourjob properly. That’s why Phill Joiner went to Amplifon, to see if they couldimprove on the quality of sound he was experiencing withhis old hearing aid.

Phill was particularly impressed by the lengths that the HearingAid Audiologist and his team at the Watford branch went to, inorder to ensure that they found him the best possible solution.

Phill’s wife Debbie, who accompanied him on his visit, explained:‘They spotted that Phill’s tinnitus was affecting the test and theyreally went out of their way to get the truest result on the test. They showed us all the options and didn’t try to ‘sell’ once!’

Now Phill has been fitted with Amplifon hearing aids andDebbie says: ‘His hearing has been fantastic since. It didn’t takehim long to get used to them and all the noises that come frombeing able to hear properly. He’s like a different man!’

‘Thanks to all of the staff in the Watford branchfor a brilliant service!’

I heard my Grandson say ‘I do’For Eileen Gould of Llanrumney, nearCardiff – the greatest delight offered byher new Amplifon hearing aids wasbeing able to hear her eldest GrandsonJoseph and his bride Irene exchangevows at their wedding...She had problems for over half a century – with no hearingat all in her right ear and whistling and interference from anold box hearing aid in her left ear. A recent operation hadmade things better. And then she heard about Amplifon...

Following a recommendation from a relative she made anappointment at our Cardiff branch, although she was a bitdubious about whether she could get help in time as thewedding was less than two weeks away...

Eileen’s local Amplifon branch in Cardiff pulled out all the stops –and she was able to fully join in the celebrations on the big day.

She said: ‘The wedding was beautiful and I know I wouldn’t haveenjoyed it so much without my new hearing aid. Amplifon hasopened doors that have given me a generous slice of life again. My husband and family are delighted! Joining in conversationwith them and others is now a pleasure.’

Good hearing is important toeveryone – at work, at home, and for thoseonce in a lifetime occasions such as a familywedding where you don’t want to miss aword of that special day.

Read our heart warming stories about the way we havehelped some of our customers live life to the full.

‘We’ve got the old Dorothy back...it’s nothing short of amazing!’

‘And that was just with the test kit Chris was using – afterthe first fitting of her own hearing aids she commented onhow noisy the car was on the way home, and we realisedshe had never noticed road noise before.

‘Now after a few weeks and careful adjustment it issimply remarkable! I am very fond of my mother-in-lawand I have to say, the old Dorothy is back! She’s always gota smile and a few well-timed comments – just the oldchit chat. Before, she had become very quiet, a littlewithdrawn, and was not really communicating – but youhave given her life back to her! From our point of view asdaughter and son-in-law, it is nothing short of amazing!

‘A most sincere thanks to Chris for his kindness andgentleness in looking after and talking to Dorothy throughthe testing and for explaining what could be done at theinitial and subsequent appointments.’

Remember, your hearing changes over time and it is important youget the regular care you need.

‘It is an opportunity for my customersto experience the latest technology –both of hearing aids and other relatedproducts. The day is all about thecustomer and focuses on what isunique about their lifestyle. Places arelimited, so I review my customers’histories very carefully to see who I

think could really benefit, beforeI offer any invitations.

‘I always encourage people to bringalong a friend or family member sothey have a familiar voice to hear

when they are comparing the benefitsof different technologies.

‘We also spend time making sure thattheir existing hearing aids are workingperfectly, so that they can make agenuine comparison with the newtechnology to see if it would reallymake a difference for them.’

As well as showing the latest hearingaids, the manufacturer can demonstrateaccessories – such as remote controlswhich switch hearing aids betweenprogrammes (for different types oflistening environments), special landlineand mobile phones and devices forconnecting hearing aids directly tomusic systems and TVs etc.

One delighted customer who bought new hearing aids after trying themout at Lewisham’s Technology Day was Mr Andrew Dunford.

He told amplifonLife: I was interested to hear about thetechnology, and I couldn’t believe how much things hadmoved on since I bought my last ones. The sound is just

wonderful – so much clearer and no feedback at all. It’s brilliant. And they arejust as easy to operate as my old ones – nothing complicated about them atall. If you want that sort of quality, it’s well worth going for.

‘I am particularly impressed with the way the hearing aids work with thespecial assistive phone. It’s not like an ordinary phone with the volume turnedup – it’s like hearing someone’s voice in your head – you don’t even have tohave the phone to your ear.

Another customer whoattended the TechnologyDay was Mr Tom Backelin.

He said: I reallylearned somethingthat day – it was areal eye opener to see

some of the devices whichwork with the hearing aids. There are definitelypossibilities I didn’t knowabout.

What better way to explore the coastalareas around the UK and Ireland, withgentle exercise in the fresh air, than bywalking the seafront promenade?

You can enjoy delightful seaside views and often learn andexperience the history of a town at the same time.

The first promenades or esplanades were built in theVictorian era when the expansion of the railwaynetwork made the coast more accessible and seasideresorts developed.

It became fashionable to visit the seaside and stroll alongthe promenade – and of course it gave visitors thechance to walk by the sea, whatever the state of the tideand without having to walk on the beach itself. It waswhere people – couples and families especially – wouldgo to walk in their best finery in order to 'be seen' and beconsidered part of 'society'.

Victorian health experts suggested the sea air wasbeneficial to people’s health and subsequently workingfolk also began to enjoy trips to their nearest seasideresort for their annual holidays. A typical seaside holidaymight also have included donkey rides, band concertsand Punch and Judy shows. For women wishing to bathein the sea, bathing machines could be hired.

Although specifically intended for walking, manymodern promenades now also allow bicycles and othernon-motorised transport.

Brighton was the first major British seaside town and waspatronised by the Prince Regent. After the rail line wasinstalled in 1841 it became Britain's most popular resort.Piers were developed as an extension of the promenadesso that visitors could walk right out to sea withoutgetting their feet wet. Many piers – such as Brighton,Bournemouth and Southend – also provided amusementarcades, music-halls and fairground carousels.

Other promenade resorts include: Blackpool,Margate, Eastbourne, Torquay, Ryde on the Isle ofWight, Skegness, Kirkcaldy in Scotland, Edinburgh’sPortobello, Wales’ Llandudno, Galway Bay’s Salthill andDublin Bay’s Dun Laoghaire – to name but a few!

Turning the spotlight on promenade walks

Amplifon can be found in many seaside towns, so why not check to see if we have a branch in a town that you areplanning to visit? We’ll always be pleased to see you! For a full list of our branches turn to pages 30 and 31.

The word ‘promenade’comes from the Frenchword for ‘walking’ andis often abbreviatedto 'The Prom'.

Healthbenefitsof walking:Regular briskwalking can helpyou lose weight. With the use of apedometer youcan count everystep you take andestimate calories burned.

Walking is a weight-bearingexercise that can helpstrengthen bones. It canalso help encourage goodcholesterol and help lowerblood pressure. Manmadepromenades are usuallyeasier to walk along thancoastal paths or beaches. This allows you to maintainan even pace with greaterconfidence, making the walkmore relaxing and enablesyou to take in the sceneryaround you.

Promenade walks are agreat choice for when thoseApril showers leave theground soggy underfoot inthe countryside.

Perhaps you do – but have youthought about the effect it mayhave on your hearing?

These days it is well documented howexposure to excessive noise in a widevariety of environments can causepermanent damage to your ears. The charity ‘Action on Hearing Loss’(formerly the RNID) recently focused onthe risks associated with loud music ina special campaignsupported by anumber of wellknown stars.

Among themwas Chris Martin, lead singer ofthe band Coldplay, who suffersfrom tinnitus.

He told the charity: ‘Looking after yourears is unfortunately something youdon't think about until there's a problem.I've had tinnitus for about 10 years, andsince I started protecting my ears ithasn't got any worse (touch wood).

‘But I wish I'd thought about it earlier. Now we always use moulded filter plugs,or in-ear monitors, to try and protect ourears. You CAN use industrial headphones, but that looks strange at a party!’

Amplifon has recently refreshed its range ofnoise protection devices, enabling you toget all the pleasure from listening to music, but without the risks.

For concert-goers and musicians we havea range of earpieces and custom-madeearmoulds which are digitally inductive, which means they allow you to hear andenjoy sound, but only at safe volumes.

Some are even designed to be used withmobile phones.

Other times when you may need earprotection include:

Swimming – custom moulded ‘Swim Plugs’offer excellent water protection for yourears while swimming or enjoying any otherkind of water sports activities.

Sleeping – we have special ear plugsmade of extra soft silicone material sothey are comfortable to wear at night. They are designed to block out ambientnoise, ensuring a good night’s sleepwhile still allowing you to hear youralarm in the morning.

To find out more about protectingyour hearing and our range of noiseprotection devices, contact your localAmplifon branch – see pages 30 and 31for details.

A family recommendation

for Amplifon!Hearing loss runs in the Hartridge family –and Mr David Hartridge of Groby has been acustomer of our Leicester Branch for a number of years.

He is delighted not only by the technical excellence of his hearingaids, but also with the level of service and support he gets fromHearing Aid Audiologist Paul Hope and Branch CoordinatorsTracey, Marlene and Helen.

He explained: ‘My hearing had been getting steadily worsebefore I came to Amplifon, but they have changed my quality oflife so much. I literally can’t hear a thing without my hearing aidsbut there really is no need to suffer hearing loss these days andI believe one can’t put a value on that.’

Mr Hartridge wanted his son Andrew to receive the same qualitysupport his family have enjoyed for years when he started tolose his hearing – so he happily recommended him to Amplifon. The only complication was, Andrew lives in Mallorca!

Pictured:Andrew Hartridge

and his father David

Andrew being lifted by crane totop of mast 66 metres high

Not to be put off, appointments were set up for his next visithome to the UK, and following on from Andrew’s preliminaryhearing test undertaken in Palma, Hearing Aid Audiologist Paulsoon established not only the hearing requirements Andrew had– but some other environmental issues as well…

Andrew works in the yachting industry and spends a lot of histime in high-tech boatyards, either in their noisy workshops, orat the top of 50 to 60 metre high masts or out on the water! Not only did he need high quality hearing, but Andrew’s hearingaids needed to be both robust and waterproof.

His father David told amplifonLife: ‘The result has beensuperb – and the really big difference for Andrew is how muchbetter he can converse in Spanish, just because he can hearmore clearly. His hearing aids are very sophisticated – havingbeen pre-programmed to accept a maximum sound limit –they automatically adjust volume levels if he walks into thenoisy machine shop.

‘As an added benefit, there is an Amplifon branch in Palma,Mallorca which has been working with Paul to providelocal support.’

Issue 8 solution above

How long have youworked for Amplifon?

It’s more than 30 years now.I started as a Trainee Dispenser

so was very much a practitioner beforeI moved into training, then later intomanagement and wider roles with ourregulators and other bodies.

I am particularly passionate aboutprofessional excellence – part of my roleis helping to ensure that we have thetraining and communication systems inplace, which can position Amplifon at theforefront of our profession.

When did youjoin BSHAA?

I became a member as soon asI qualified in 1978 and have been

heavily involved throughout my career, being a BSHAA Council memberfor most of that time.Amplifon has alwaysbeen very supportive ofmy work with BSHAA,especially as our aimsare perfectly aligned.

It’s all about maintaining high standardsof professional practice – not justproviding excellent technology, but reallyhelping to improve someone’s lifethrough better hearing. BSHAA alsoengages with other professional bodies, government organisations and those inthe voluntary sector which are interestedin adult hearing impairment.

What is Amplifon’srelationship with BSHAA?

Amplifon belongs to BSHAA’swell established Customer

Care Scheme, which is a bit like the‘Ombudsman’ for our industry. All qualified Hearing Aid Audiologists(HAAs) can also join BSHAA asindividuals.

What doesbeing President

of BSHAA involve?

My Presidency gives me anopportunity to lead BSHAA at a

particularly interesting time because of thereforms in NHS Adult Hearing Services inEngland. The independent sector is goingto become increasingly important in theprovision of these services.

Do you haveany experience of

hearing loss yourself?

Yes, I lost all of the hearing in oneear and partially in the other as a

result of a surgical accident some yearsago. I now wear hearing aids and, as youcan imagine, it gives me enormousinsight into both the issues faced bypeople with hearing loss and into whatcan be achieved with the righttechnology and support.

People still do not take enough care oftheir hearing – but the healthcare systemdoesn’t help to encourage this.

I think that people should consider havingtheir hearing checked as routinely ashaving an eye test or going to the dentist;I agree with Dr Chris Steele, our hearingloss ambassador, that people should startgetting their hearing checked from theage of 50.

What do you like to dooutside of work?

My family are very important tome – I am married with two

daughters and four grandchildren. I amparticularly proud that one of mydaughters and her husband are alsoinvolved in providing hearing services.

When I’m not working, I enjoy gardening– I find it very relaxing although I alwaysseem to find I have too many plants forthe space available! I also like reading andlistening to music and my tastes are veryvaried in both. I think I simply enjoyfinding out about things I don’t know –I really just love learning.

Barry also helps with the ‘Ask an expert’feature on our website, where you canask questions about hearing loss and ourhearing aids.
