Michael Tougias, author of The Untold Story of the Cuban Missile CrisisOctober 27, 2019

Join the Friends of the Goodnow Library for a new multi-media presentation by NY Times bestselling author Michael Tougias entitled The Untold Story of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

In this multimedia presentation based on his newly published co-authored book, New York Times bestselling author Michael J.

AMONG FRIENDS, SEPTEMBER 2019, PAGE 7

Tougias first chronicles the thirteen harrowing days of the Cuban Missile Crisis and then outlines the steps President Kennedy made to reach a decision on a course of action. Special emphasis is given to the heroes of the crisis: the U-2 pilots who flew unarmed over Cuba to secure the photographic proof that the Soviets were installing nuclear missiles on the island. These pilots helped President Kennedy achieve a difficult objective: to have the nuclear missiles removed fromCuba without triggering Armageddon. JFK secretly audio recorded every meeting conducted during the Cuban Missile Crisis. These transcripts, as well as recently declassified CIA documents, form the basis of this fascinating analysis of JFK’s successful decision making.

Tougias will also focus on three lesser-known events that put us on the brink of nuclear war: The shooting down of Major Rudolph Anderson who was killed in his U-2 by a Soviet

Surface to Air Missile over Cuba.

The accidental incursion of a U-2 from Alaska into Soviet air space, and the chase that ensued, including fighter jets with nuclear tipped missiles.

The Russian submarine commander who wanted to launch his nuclear torpedo when the Americans tried to force him to the surface.

This unique presentation entertains with the dramatic chronicling of the Cuban Missile Crisis (with slides) while providing useful analysis of JFK’s process of tackling major decisions in practical ways that others can learn from and adopt. It’s an especially timely topic today.

Nick Dinnerstein and Paul Jacobs – Baroque Cello and Piano ConcertNovember 24, 2019

Baroque music, with its balance of clarity and emotional intensity, continues to speak deeply to us today. Bach and Vivaldi brought instrumental music to new heights, and in the process, the cello as we know it today, found its voice.

Bach's 6 Suites for Solo Cello and Vivaldi's Sonatas for Cello and Keyboard both contain worlds of ideas and expression. This concert will feature work from each set of music, along with music by future composers who found inspiration in the wonderful style of the

Baroque. Brahms, a composer who loved to draw from different styles, bases the theme of the lastmovement of the piece on a melody by Bach. Schnittke, the Soviet and German 20th century composer, made his name with "polystylism", bending the conventions of the Baroque to his personal mode of expression.

Nick Dinnerstein

Nick Dinnerstein is a cellist who connects deeply with audiences through imaginative, original, and expressive performances. His career weaves threads through classical and popular music – and his original compositions express themselves by exploring and blending the two.

He has had a wide range of musical experience, including performing on baroque cello, recording with songwriters, and playing both traditional and new classical music. He is also a dedicated teacher.

Nick is currently based in New York City.

Paul Jacobs

Boston-based pianist, Paul Jacobs has performed across the U.S. as a soloist and chamber musician in a variety of venues including Bruno Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center; Queens Library, NY; The Art Complex Museum, Duxbury, MA; The Lilypad, Cambridge, MA; Hill Hall, UNC; University Capitol Centre Recital Hall, UI; and The Block, Muskegon, MI. His repertoire covers a wide range of music with an affinity for 20th century and new works. Solo performances have featured Ives’s Concord Sonata, selections of Ligeti Etudes, and Philip Glass’s Metamorphosis.

Mr. Jacobs is a member of the Thoreau Piano Trio which currently has a concert series at Chelmsford Center for the arts. Past residencies include the Warebrook Contemporary Music Festival in Vermont and The White Lake Chamber Music Festival in West Michigan.
