BOOK REVIEWRENEGADE AMISH

Donald Kraybill released his book, “Renegade Amish,” in late September of this year. Last month we featured an interview with Kraybill and a recap of a crime that captured the interest of the nation. As a follow up on the story, we share with you a review of Kraybill’s latest book.

This month’s read was not our traditional Amish fiction. “Renegade Amish” is a shocking behind the scenes look at the Bergholz beard cutting attacks. The detailed accounts of the attacks were disturbing and unsettling to say the least. Such a violent act from such a peaceful culture was unheard of until these attacks came to light. Kraybill really digs deep into the beliefs of the Amish

culture revealing how shaming and painful the attacks really were. He delves into the investigation of the Bergholz clan, with detailed information from his own investigations and accounts from victims. The book also covers the trial of the ten men and six

women involved. As an assistant to the prosecutors regarding Amish culture, Kraybill helps the attacks become the first example of a true hate crime regarding the Amish community.I found this book fascinating. When the attacks first

came to light two years ago, the media revealed an attack that made the Amish seem like a cult. Kraybill does an excellent job separating the Bergholtz clan from our traditional ideals of the Amish community. This book has been a real eye-opener on all that took

place with the beard cuttings and the mindset of the attackers. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading true crime novels or was intrigued by the events that took place with the Bergholtz clan.

Tucked into the hustle and bustle of Main Street, Berlin, a quaint little shop that very much resembles a home sits full to the brim with the most unique home décor items. Your treasure hunt begins right on the front porch.

Inside and out, you will find a plethora of home décor items from the primitive to the rustic country and even antique finds. “Teresa has this magical knack for displaying the combination of items in a homey way that draws the customers in,” said Lacey Marsh, public relations specialist for The Primitive Porch. “The customers love it.”

Teresa and Gary Callihan started a business in Dresden, Ohio selling retired Longaberger baskets and small country crafts. They later built a store-front just across from the Longaberger homestead called The Basket Shoppe, which continues to sell baskets as well as Longaberger pottery, basket protectors and accessories.

Teresa and her husband began to explore the Berlin market and decided to expand into the area. Teresa had a love for all things crafty and wanted to explore the more primitive style. Not wanting to offend her already supportive cliental by abandoning the rustic country look and diving into the grungy primitive look, she chose to combine them both.th.thththtthththththththttht emeeemememmme bb ot

In January of 2011, Primitive Porch opened up shop in what was known to the locals and frequent shoppers as the Stitching Shop. Opening day just happened to fall during the Pajama Party event and The Primitive Porch found themselves hopping with customers.

Unfortunately, some of these customers thought they were visiting the former store which left them disappointed at first. While some ventured back out of the store, many stayed inside to see what new crafts had been brought to the area.

As people stumbled upon the little treasure tucked in between Country Craft Cupboard and Boyd and Wurthmann, they became pleasantly surprised with what they found. Country crafts, primitives and antiques all in one place and so much for the eye to see.

“I think what is unique about our store is that we carry both antiques and crafts,” said Marsh. “There are plenty of craft stores and there are lots of antiques stores but you don’t usually find the two together.”

Antique items come from all over. The Primitive Porch enlists the help of pickers who venture out to find the most unique pieces. Teresa also attends a lot of auctions in search of the most unusual and authentic pieces.

Recently, people have been approaching the staff of The Primitive Porch with antiques of their own - old furniture or unique items from a relative’s home or items they no longer have space for. The store has found this to be a convenient way to bring in new inventory. fouinv

The items move pretty quickly in the store. “If you don’t buy it when you see it, it just might not be there when you come back for it,” said Marsh.

You can find a lot of different items in one place. Reproduction pieces are popular among those who like the antique look but often can’t afford the

antique price tag. Luminara candles are also very popular and The Primitive Porch carries a non-traditional style that has a hand-dipped look to them.

Along with country styles and primitive crafts, The Primitive Porch carries artificial florals which can be made into unique arrangements by a talented staff member or bought individually to be incorporated into home décor projects. Handmade, American-made and locally-made items are the theme of the store.

Teresa’s daughter, Lisa Browning, hand-paints designs on many of the repurposed pieces and a local artists hand-paints letter blocks that make great seasonal decorations or inspirational decorations. (The blocks feature words like, “Hope,” “Joy,” “Winter,” “Summer,” “Ho Ho Ho,” and “Happy Holidays.”) Other featured, exclusive items include handmade dolls by Teresa’s sister and another local artisan.

Inventory changes every season and items move through the store very quickly. “We have a huge conglomerate of items that are changing all the time,” explained Marsh.

The months leading up to the holiday season have proven to be busy ones. Whether they are looking for the perfect gifts or unique décor items, people are getting ready for the holidays and making the Primitive Porch one of their stops.

“We are always looking for new everyday items. We have a large following of our holiday items but we would like to see more traditional pieces that people can display in their homes year round,” said Marsh.

Their following is even more prevalent among their Facebook page. New items and unique finds are posted to the page regularly and viewers often call in to order an item they saw. Because inventory is always changing, the store does not have a common ordering system in place online, but Marsh says, “we have cliental that reach out to us frequently and one gal calls every couple months to place an order.”

“We have a lot of customers that come in off the street and love the store and tell others about us,” said Marsh. The staff also keeps customers returning year-after-year.

“A lot of people really enjoy our staff. Many customers come in and recognize us by name,” said Marsh. “We have a very helpful and knowledgeable staff that go the extra mile to help someone. We hate to have anyone not be able to find what they are looking for.”

The Primitive Porch is located at 4815 E. Main Street, Berlin. Doors are open Monday- Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. For more information call 330-893-0150 or visit www.primporch.com and find them on Facebook.

They come for the leaves, they come for the shopping and they come for the culture. This time of year, you will find the streets of

downtown Berlin bustling with activity as shoppers come for the homemade Amish goodies and gifts for the holiday season.

But not all visitors to the area are attracted to the authentic Amish fare. In fact, many travel from all across the globe to learn more about a culture that has become famous thanks to a strong media presence. They want to know, “what are the Amish all about?”

Two gentlemen from Germany happened upon the Amish and Mennonite Heritage Center just before closing. Lester Beachy, a volunteer at the Heritage Center and author of “Our Amish Values,” was just closing up when they came in asking how they could become Amish.

Taking a look at the two men, one sporting a spiky Mohawk and both wearing v-neck tees and shorts, Beachy raised an eyebrow at their interest in the Amish culture. The two men were adamant on their request, and Beachy asked if they would be interested in attending a church service.

The next morning, too Beachy’s surprise, the two gentlemen showed up for the church service. Beachy had to admit, he was a little embarrassed as they

Why do they come to Amish Country?

A GROWING FASCINATION WITH THE CULTURE FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE

showed up in their same casual attire and the Mohawk stood out like a sore thumb, but the two men took in every minute of the service. Being German, Beachy knew that they were able to understand the service.

The two German travelers became fascinated with the culture and decided they would like to stay longer. An Amish family from the community volunteered to serve as a host for the two men and gave them a taste of what it was like to live the Amish life.

The men rose early to help with the family chores the next day. They spent their days in the fields helping to make hay and the evenings helping out on the family farm. When the Amish owner of the farm stopped to rest in the afternoons, the two men took on some of the chores by themselves and even helped the neighbors, although they never accepted money for their services, explained Beachy

Beachy relayed, their favorite part of the trip was the summer evenings they spent gathered around a fire just talking with the family. “This is great,” one of the men had said. “At home, I come home and try to talk with my parents and they just sit there, starring at this box in the middle of the room. They don’t even hear me. That hurts.”

The two men spent three weeks in Amish country that summer. They were simply on a trip across the country, landing in Seattle and planning to walk from

there. (After realizing the amount of belongings they had with them, they quickly decided they would rent a car, explained Beachy.) They took back home with them valuable lessons of family and faith and community.

Travelers come from all over to experience the beauty of Amish country as well as the unique culture. With the media depicting scenes of rambunctious Amish teens discovering the big cities and groups of Amish “Mafias” hovering over their communities, the people come with all kinds of questions.

For many of the travelers coming from other countries, especially those of third-world and underdeveloped countries, questions often revolve around sustainability. In particular, farming practices are shared.

In countries such as Central and South America and Africa, the pioneer ways of horse-drawn farming equipment is widely practice. Progress Days brought in thousands of travelers (many from other countries) to see what advancements in horse-drawn equipment have been made.

Wealthy horse farmers come to the area to purchase the latest in equipment and the finest horses for their team, explained a volunteer at the Heritage

Center (who wished to remain anonymous). What’s interesting, is the young entrepreneurs who are looking to restore the practices of simple farming. “They are not doing this as a hobby, but to revive a lost art and restore old practices.”

For some third-world countries, even the simple practices of the Amish way are still unattainable.

While they are able to bring back some practices of a single horse-drawn plow, the advancements of a four-horse team to maintain

a larger field is just unrealistic for their situations. A lady visiting from Saudi Arabia came to study

the sustainability of the Amish culture. Her goal was to study how small-scale business operations and special trades could potentially be financially and economically sustainable in the small indigenous communities she supported.

“It’s a whole different culture. What works here might not work for your community,” said the Heritage Center volunteer.

Wherever the people come from, there is no denying there is a strong interest and often fascination with the Amish community. Just this year, the Heritage Center has seen people from 180 different countries pass through their doors, bringing with them a never-ending supply of questions and curiosities.

If you would like to continue on with what you get started at this instructional class then you may want to bring your own cotton fabric. If you want to just learn the basics of toothbrush rug hooking then you can use the provided materials for practice that evening. The holiday home entertaining season is gearing up, which means it’s time to take your entertaining dreams and inspirations and make them a reality. As you begin planning for the next time you play host(ess) with the most(est), don’t let the creativity stop with the food. Create a holiday tablescape to set the mood and serve as the focal point so you can have the prettiest and most festive holiday party possible.

Inspiration can come from the changing seasons, touches of color, unique pieces and chic dinnerware to draw your guests in to an inviting celebration of friends, family and food. Not sure how to tackle your table? Follow these tips from the entertaining experts at CorningWare, Corelle and more to help you turn your table from simple to simply breathtaking.THROWBACK TABLESCAPES USING FAMILY TREASURES

Use a family heirloom as your starting point to bring a totally custom and retro twist to the table. Not only will it help to choose a color theme, but it will serve as a great conversation starter and ice breaker. Whether it’s your grandmother’s gorgeous glass vase filled with seasonal flowers that pop, or a retro tree topper, everyone at the table will notice and enjoy an unexpected piece. SWEETEN THE DEAL

Nothing adds color and fun to a table like sweet treats. Find uniquely shaped bowls and glasses and fill them to the brim with your favorite colorful holiday candy like Candy Corn. Fill an oversized hurricane glass with mini candy canes or chocolates and marshmallows for after dinner s’mores. Get personal and create your own “Friendsgiving” cornucopia filled with treasures your guests will love, like old pictures, ticket stubs or their favorite candies.STAY CHIC WITH THE CLASSICS

Invest in quality, white dinnerware and serveware to easily transition from holiday entertaining to everyday use. Classic white plates complimented with white baking and serving vessels can serve as a blank canvas to add color and personal touches. Boutique by Corelle is a timeless dinnerware set that resists breaks, chips, scratches and stains providing durability to create the perfect table season after season. And French White

CorningWare with its classic fluting makes every dish you serve look extra smart. ADD SEASONAL ELEMENTS

Personalize the table with your favorite seasonal flowers, fruits and vegetables for an organic and fresh look. These elements bring pops of color and texture to amplify your tablescape. For arrangements, look for white lilies, red roses, green button poms and other festive greenery, such as berries, pinecones and sprigs of cedar. Not only will it look beautiful, but it will smell good, too. MATCH IT UP

The best way to create a cohesive look is with full sets of dishes, glassware and silverware. You can get everything to complete your table at CorningWare, Corelle and more stores, which offer complete kitchenware collections from over 80 well-known and trusted brands including Corelle, CorningWare, Baker’s Secret, Chicago Cutlery and Pyrex. Not to mention, CorningWare, Corelle and more offers holiday products with the color schemes and patterns you need to complete your festive look. You can find a store closest to you at www.shopworldkitchen.com/stores.

Not only will guests bask in the creative design of your stunning tablescape, but the table will bring everyone together to create new memories – which is what the season is all about. For more ways to make your spread spectacular, visit www.shopworldkitchen.com.

Swiss cheese that is. When a piece of creamy, flavorful Swiss cheese comes in contact with your taste buds, you can’t help but let out an audible “Mmmmmm” and

wonder to yourself, do I really need anything more than this? The holes in a piece of Swiss cheese are called “eyes” and

these holes are formed when a natural bacteria consumes the lactic acid in the cheese and releases carbon dioxide gas, which slowly forms bubbles, creating the rounded holes or “eyes.” A chemical reaction and science create a beautiful piece of dairy perfection. Swiss is just one of the many varieties of delicious cheeses available at Shisler’s Cheese House in Orrville, Ohio.

According to a report last year from a consumer group at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, each American, on average, is now eating 23 pounds of cheese a year. This is up from the numbers in the 1970s when we were only consuming 8 pounds a year.

With numbers like that it is easy to see that our love of cheese has only grown over time, just as the local love for

Shisler’s Cheese House has continued to increase through the years since its doors opened in 1958.

With an expanded line of imported cheeses, a bigger gift line, bulk foods and an e-commerce website for online ordering and shipping, Shisler’s is moving forward with the boldness of a blue cheese. There is a high level of expertise behind the counter for customers searching for inspiration or looking for an answer to specific questions about ingredients and recipes. Rita Shisler, owner, and her staff are friendly, conversational, and they approach the way they do business from a place of excellent customer service and working together to

make people feel like family and friends when they walk through the door.

“My family and I have always wanted this to be a business that would be around for generations; to see customers that we know come back every year,” Shisler said. “We attract U.S. Route 30 travelers to a piece of delicious Swiss cheese and a cold drink. When they walk through our door it is all about having that wonderful customer experience so that you leave knowing you have friends here.”

Long time customer and friend, Joe Knutson, has been coming to Shisler’s for the cheese for the past 10 years. “Rita has a huge heart and she shares that in so many ways,” commented Knutson. “Her cheese house, her personality

There is a Veteran’s Care Package, a “Hot Stuff” Collection for those with a taste for the sharper, spicier cheeses and many other boxes to suit whatever taste you are going for.

Pre-selected cheeses that pair well with each type of wine, scotch or beer are ready to order and can be shipped directly to the consumer making it less challenging to pick a flavor to go with your favorite beverage. Choose from: Red or White Wine Cheese Collections, Beer Collection and Scotch Collection.

There are also health-conscious, low carb., low fat and sugar free items available. Customers searching for gourmet items can find these on the website,

including roasted pecans, natural pistachio nuts and extra large redskin peanuts. Other items such as rolled Amish butter and maple syrup are also featured online.

Each year Rita participates in the Germany booth, at the Ethnic Fair in Wooster, along with members of the Shisler family and Shisler’s Cheese House staff. Shisler’s Cheese House also supports the Orrville Lions Club and Rita is all about bringing the community together to help others.

One of her passions, which is supported through the Lions Club, is providing vision screenings for pre-school children in the area. In 2015, Shisler will become the second woman to be district governor for the local Lions Club, something she is also particularly proud of. For more information or to see how you can become involved visit: http://www.orrvillelionsclub.com/

Shisler’s Cheese House is located at 55 Kidron Rd. in Orrville (where it meets U.S. Route 30). Business hours are Monday through Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sunday 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. For more information visit CheeseHouse.com or call 330-682-2105.
