collaboratively with teachers to maximize students’

academic improvement. Parents are also encouraged to

contact the school office for any concern related to

their child’s performance or well-being. Our school is

committed to providing a safe and supportive learning

environment. However, we need to encourage our

students to report issues to the staff, in particular duty

teachers, class teachers and the Deputy Principal, in

order to have access to the support that is

available. Please check and sign your child’s school diary

daily and use it as a means of communication.

I would also like to take the opportunity to thank the

parents who have inculcated outstanding manners in

their children as most of them are demonstrating

appropriate behaviour and have been following our key

social skills, namely ROCKS – respect, ownership

(responsibility), caring, knowledge and safety. Parents

are strongly advised that as per Child Protection Policy,

please do NOT communicate with children other than

your own, on the school grounds. Taking photos of

other’s children and posting photos on social media is

also not permitted. Please do not breach this rule as

every child has a right to have access to a safe and

Pre-kindergarten Classes

Teachers have been very impressed with the way our

pre-kindergarten students have settled in. We sincerely

appreciate parents’ effort in ensuring school readiness

as this will give us a head start in preparing students for

kindergarten in 2018. Parents are encouraged to use

the pre-kindergarten packs provided during the

orientation program to develop students’ Literacy and

Numeracy skills.

Athletics Carnival

Students, teachers and parents had an action pack day,

participating in the annual Athletics Carnival on the

18th of September. All students were actively engaged

and teachers worked tirelessly for the full day to ensure

that students enjoyed the day. The school appreciates

the effort of the parents who were present at the

stadium to provide incentives to their children.

Parents’ Workshop

A very interactive session of the above on how to help

children with writing at home was organised by the

school on the 7th of September in the school hall. Thank

you and well done to those parents who took the

opportunity to explore various ideas and resources.

Teachers delivered informative presentations on

expectations at school and conducted discussions on

programs used to teach writing skills. A very useful

Literacy pack was provided to the parents to be used at

home to guide the students. Please support your

children by participating in the future workshops.

Mathletics

Since the beginning of this academic year, Mathletics

providers have recorded the result of our school

students. On average, students now score 92% in

curriculum activities. This is an improvement

of an average of 35% compared to the 19% last year.

Years Two, Four and Six Literacy/ Numeracy Focus

Our School Improvement Plan includes the

implementation of a number of Literacy/

Numeracy intervention programs for the students and

in particular for the above classes. Parents are kindly

requested to monitor their child’s use of e-resources

such as Mathletics, Literacy Pro and Bug Club. Years

Two, Four and Six students are required to enhance

their development in Literacy and Numeracy by

regularly using Excel Test Zone, which is an online

learning tool. Please ensure that students are fully

engaged with their Reading Logs to develop their

comprehension skills and are completing homework

and other projects to a high calibre.

Year Six Promotion

For students to transit effectively to high school, they

need to be well equipped with Literacy and Numeracy

skills. Parents are reminded that Year six students will

sit for the GAT exam on the 2nd of November 2017.

Teachers are humbly requesting for parental support in

monitoring students’ revision.

Yearly Examination

Primary Yearly examinations are scheduled for Week Six

(13th – 17th November) and it is critical that students are

guided by their parents as they prepare for the

examinations. An assessment schedule, including a brief

summary of content to be tested and the timetable

were submitted to the parents last week. Please contact

the class teacher through the school office if you have

not received the assessment schedule or for any other

clarification.

We would like to acknowledge the effort of parents, all

the staff involved (including support and teacher aides)

and students of Years Three and Five for the impressive

NAPLAN results of 2017. We would also like to thank

Inter-schools Public Speaking Competition

On the 31st of August our school hosted Inter-schools

Public Speaking Competition with Unity Grammar and

Malek Fahd Islamic School. Students from our school

presented themselves with confidence and spoke in an

articulate manner. We are thrilled to inform the parents

that our students were awarded six out of the

twelve medals and trophies. The primary school

teachers are to be thanked for mentoring, polishing and

fine-tuning the participants’ verbal and non-verbal

communication skills.

Science Week

Students participated in a fantastic Science incursion on

the 19th of September. It allowed them to conduct

experiments and explore many concepts in a practical

manner. The school hall was filled with applauds of

excitement as students observed the show and

developed their understanding of Science. Thank you, to

all those involved, for giving students the opportunity to

discover knowledge in a meaningful way.

Numeracy Week Celebrations

As part of Numeracy Week celebrations, students

engaged in problem solving via a road show with

Professor Maths on the 30th of August and 1st of

September. The hands on approach enhanced the

understanding of concepts and students were highly

motivated by the strategies and resources used for the

show. The props as well as working with students across

the stream added another dimension of enjoyment for

the students.

After School Support Classes

Parents are reminded that the above classes will

continue as usual from 3:30 – 4:30 pm on Tuesdays for

the rest of the term. Please also note that classes for

Term Four After School Support commenced on

Tuesday 17th of October (Week Two of Term Four) and

the last lesson will be on the 5th of December (Week

Nine of Term Four). Parents are encouraged to take

advantage of this free tuition and work in partnership

with teachers as we move forward for academic

progress.

Examinations for Year Seven, Eight, Nine & Ten Term Four is will see all our Year Seven to Year Ten students sitting examinations. The students will be receiving revision lessons on the lead up to the examinations. Students must also revise at home to ensure they do well. Our school promotions policy will be implemented for any student not achieving the minimum expectations. Parents have already been notified of their child’s Half-Yearly Examination performance if they were below expectation. New Year Twelve All Year Twelve students have been informed of the high expectations at GVIC. Based on students Year Eleven preliminary examination results; discussions were held with students and parents to emphasise the hard work ethic they must demonstrate for the HSC.

Year Twelve Graduation On the last day of Term Three the Year Twelve graduation took place in the school hall. The ceremony was a huge success that marked the hard work of students and staff. At the start of Term Four students began their HSC examinations; we wish them well and hope they all achieve successful results.

At Green Valley Islamic College, the English Department

is working hard at creating relevant and meaningful

lessons for their students to construct a stimulating

classroom environment. Students are actively

participating and engaging in the texts and content that

they are studying in class this term. The teachers are

ensuring that their students are feeling motivated,

inspired and supported in order to prepare them for

their final examinations.

All students have access to the literacy program,

WordFlyers both at school and at home. Students are

encouraged to take part in this program to further

develop their literacy skills. Students have access to

their usernames and passwords. Parents are reminded

to encourage students to access this at home and

undertake activities from the website. Further details

regarding WordFlyers can be found on the School’s

website.

A final reminder that Yearly Examinations are

approaching: Year Ten in Week Four and Year Seven to

Nine in Weeks Six and Seven. Students should ensure

that they are keeping up to date with their class work

and exercise books, as this is an integral part of their

revision and examination preparation. There are a

variety of resources in the library that students have

access to all year. Please encourage your child/ren to

read and use the school library regularly to borrow

books. Parents are encouraged to assist students in

developing effective study routines to ensure that their

child is readily prepared for their English Examinations.

Year Nine History Excursion

On Tuesday, 17th October our Year Nine students

represented Green Valley Islamic College at the 'Kokoda

Memorial Walkway'. Upon our arrival we were greeted

by two volunteer WWII veterans, whom guided us

around the memorial and shared their harrowing

experiences with us. Our adventure began with paying

our respect to the fallen soldiers, placing a floral reef on

Marble Memorial and singing the National Anthem. The

students then began their own journey along the

Kokoda track, living vicariously through the veterans.

The students commented on how beneficial this

excursion was - suggesting that 'it was so much better

than reading about it from the text book'.

Year Eleven SOR Excursion

On Monday, 18th September, Year Eleven Studies of

Religion, students went on an excursion to aid their

understanding of the content studied during the

preliminary course. The first stop was the Sydney Jewish

Museum, where students were welcomed by a

Holocaust survivor, Olga, who courageously shared her

story of survival. Next students were guided around the

museum where their understanding of the Jewish

religion and culture was fostered.

Our second stop for the day was the Mingyue Lay

Buddhist Temple, where a friendly guide, Louisa,

showed the students around the Temple and

surroundings to aid their understanding of Buddhism.

Students were so excited by this visit, as they were able

to come up close to monks ‘chanting’ for the sake the

others.

Overall, the students really enjoyed their day out and

commented on how this experience aided their

understanding of the course, and religions in the

Australian society.
