Your notebook is available in several different versions. Most of the sections in this manual apply to

all models - any differences are pointed out separately. Some of the illustrations and features in thismanual may differ from your model and are for guidance only.

Your operating system (e.g. Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition) has already been preinstalled andoptimally configured so that you can be up and running from the moment you switch on your AMILOfor the first time.

Your notebook features the very latest technology so that you get the best performance from yourcomputing experience. Depending on which model you own, you have access to:

● Up to 2 Gbyte Mbyte of main memory (RAM)

● a Multi-format DVD burner with double layer support to watch DVD movies and record yourown disks

● S-Video out for connecting your notebook to your television

● An IEEE 1394 (FireWire) connection for high speed devices such as digital camcorders

● Four USB ports which provide easy expansion with webcams, game pads, printers and more

● An internal modem for connecting to the internet

● A PC card slot (CardBus or PCMCIA) for using one type I or type II PC card

● An onboard sound card and two stereo loudspeakers for your audio enjoyment.You can even connect headphones, a microphone and external speakers for even betterperformance.

With the user-friendly BIOS Setup Utility you can control the hardware of your notebook and protectyour system better against unauthorised access by using the powerful password properties.

This operating manual tells you how to put your AMILO into operation, and how to operate it in dailyuse.

Pay attention to the information provided in the "Safety" manual and in the following safetynotes.

Observe the sections in the manual marked with the symbol on the left.

● When connecting and disconnecting cables, observe the relevant notes in this operatingmanual.

● Only use batteries designed for this notebook.Do not store batteries for longer periods in the notebook.Take care not to drop the batteries or otherwise damage their casing (fire risk).If the rechargeable batteries develop a fault please stop using them immediately.Do not touch the contacts of the batteries.Never interconnect the positive and negative terminals of a battery.Batteries are harmful to the environment. You should dispose of them following guidance fromyour local District Council.

● A lithium battery (button cell) is contained in your notebook:The lithium battery should only be replaced by an authorised technician. Incorrect handling maylead to a risk of explosion.Only use batteries approved by Fujitsu Siemens Computers.

Notes on installing and removing components

!

Only qualified technicians should repair your notebook. Unauthorised opening or incorrectrepair may greatly endanger the user (electric shock, fire risk) and will invalidate yourwarranty.

● Switch the notebook off and pull the power plug out of the mains socket.

● Remove the battery.

● Take care when you use the locking mechanisms on the battery and any other component.

● Never use sharp objects such as screwdrivers, scissors or knives as leverage to removecovers.

Boards with electrostatic sensitive devices (ESD) are identifiable by the label shown.

When you handle boards fitted with ESDs, you must, under all circumstances, observe the followingpoints:

● You must statically discharge yourself before working with boards (e.g. by touching a groundedobject).

● The equipment and tools you use must be free of static charges.

● Remove the power plug from the mains supply before inserting or removing boards containingESDs.

● Always hold boards with ESDs by their edges.

● Never touch pins or conductors on boards fitted with ESDs.

Energy saving

If you will not be using your notebook, switch it off.

Make use of the device's energy saving functions (see "Using your notebook"). The notebook usesless power when the power management features are enabled. You will then be able to work forlonger before having to recharge the battery.

Energy saving under Windows

If a monitor with energy saving features is connected to your notebook, you can use the Screen Savertab to activate the energy saving features of the monitor. Select a screen saver in the menu Start -Control Panel - Appearance and Themes - Display - Screen Saver .You may set further energy saving functions in the menu Start - Control Panel - Performance and

Maintenance - Power Options.

There is no need for a screen saver for the LCD panel since the LCD screen is turned offvia the energy saving functions.

Travelling with your notebook

Please follow these guidelines when travelling with your notebook.

Before you travel

● Back up important data stored on your hard disk.

● Switch off the radio component (Wireless LAN) for security reasons when youn cannot excludethat the transmitted radio waves can negatively affect electrical and electronic devices in yoursurrounding area.

● Switch off the radio component (Wireless LAN) for data security reasons. With data traffic via awireless connection, it is also possible for unauthorised third parties to receive data.

Information on activating data encryption is provided in the documentation for yourradio component.

● If you wish to use your notebook during a flight, first check with the flight attendants if it is OK todo so.

● If you are travelling abroad, check that the mains adapter can be operated with the local mainsvoltage. If this is not the case, obtain the appropriate power adapter for your notebook.Do not use any other voltage converter!

● Make sure that the rated current of the power adapter is not higher than that of the powersystem to which you connect the power adapter (see technical data of the power adapter).

When travelling in other countries

● Check whether the local power supply and the specifications of the power cable arecompatible. If this is not the case, buy a power cable that matches the local conditions. Do notuse a connection adapter for electrical devices to connect the notebook.

● Enquire with the corresponding government office of the country you will be travelling in as to

whether you may operate the radio component integrated in your notebook there (also seesection "CE marking" in chapter "Manufacturer’s notes").

● If you use the modem, incompatibilities with the local telecommunications system may result.This may result in poor performance, or the modem will not work at all.You may require a country-specific telephone adapter (available as an accessory).

Transporting the notebook

● Remove all disks (e.g. CD, DVD) from the drives.

● Switch the notebook off.

● Unplug the power adapter and all external devices from the power socket.

● Disconnect the power adapter cable and the data cables for all external devices.

● Close the LCD screen so that it locks into place.

● To protect against damaging jolts and bumps, use a notebook carrying case to transport yournotebook.

● Protect the notebook from severe shocks and extreme temperatures (e.g. direct sunlight in acar).

Cleaning the notebook► Switch the notebook off.

► Unplug the mains adapter from the mains socket.

► Remove the battery.

Do not clean any interior parts yourself; leave this job to a service technician.

Only use cleaning products designed for computers. Normal household cleaners andpolishes can damage the markings on the keyboard and the device, the paintwork or thenotebook itself.

Ensure that no liquid enters the notebook.

Wipe the casing with a dry cloth.If particularly dirty, use a cloth which has been moistened in mild domestic detergent and thencarefully wrung out.

To clean the keyboard and the touchpad, you can use disinfectant wipes.

Using your notebook for the first time

!

Please read the "Important notes" chapter.

Upon delivery, the battery can be found in the battery compartment and is not charged. Beforeputting the notebook into operation, the battery must be completely charged.

Your operating system (e.g.Windows XP Home Edition) and the hardware drivers have beenpreinstalled for you. Before you can use your notebook for the first time you need to install thesupplied software.

When not plugged into a mains outlet, the notebook runs on its built-in battery. You can increase thebattery's life by enabling the system's energy saving functions.

When you use your notebook in your home or office, we recommend you use the mains adapterinstead of the battery.

Please see the "Connecting external devices" chapter for instructions on how to connect devicessuch as a mouse and a printer to the notebook.

Unpacking and checking your notebook

► Unpack all the individual parts.

► Check your notebook for damage incurred during transportation.

Should you discover damages incurred during transportation, notify your local sales outlet

immediately!

Do not discard the original packing material of the devices. You may need the packagingin the future if you need to transport your device.

Selecting a location

!

Select a suitable location for the notebook before setting it up. Consider the followingpoints when looking for a location:

● Never place the notebook on a soft surface (e.g. carpeting, upholstered furniture,bed). This can block the air vents and cause overheating and damage.

● Do not place the notebook on your legs for a longer period of time. The underside ofthe notebook heats up during normal operation. Longer contac with the skin canbecome unpleasant or even result in burns.

● Place the notebook on a stable, flat, nonslippery surface. Please note that the rubberfeet may mark certain types of surfaces.

● Keep other objects 100 mm away from the notebook and its power adapter to ensureadequate ventilation.

● Never cover the fan intake or exhaust openings of the notebook or the poweradapter.

● Do not expose the notebook to extreme environmental conditions.Protect the notebook from dust, humidity, and heat.

Connecting the power adapter

Please take note of the information in the section "Safety notes".

The power cable supplied conforms to the requirements of the country in which youpurchased your notebook. Make sure that the power cable is approved for use in thecountry in which you intend to use it.

The mains adapter's AC cable should only be connected to a mains socket if the notebookis connected to the mains adapter.

Do not use the power adapter for other notebooks or devices.

Do not use a power adapter that is not specially intended for this notebook.

► Connect the power adapter cable to the DC jack (DC IN) of the notebook (1).

► Connect the power cable into the power adapter (2).

► Plug the power cable into a mains outlet (3).

The power indicator of the notebook lights up. The battery will charge.

Switching on the notebook for the first time

When you switch on your notebook for the first time, the supplied software is installed andconfigured. Due to the fact that this installation must not be interrupted, you should setaside enough time for it to be fully completed and connect the notebook to the mains outlet

using the power adapter.During installation, the notebook may only be rebooted when you are requested to do so!

Your operating system is pre-installed on the hard disk to facilitate the procedure when you use yournotebook for the first time.

► Switch the notebook on (see "Using your notebook" chapter, "Switching on the notebook" section).

► During installation, follow the instructions on screen.

Consult the operating system manual if there is anything unclear about the requested input data.

Status indicators

The status indicators provide information about the status of the power supply, the drives and thekeyboard functions.

The meanings of the symbols are as follows:

Indicator Wireless LAN

The indicator lights up: The wireless LAN module is switched on.

Power-on indicator

The indicator lights up: The notebook is on.

Energy-saving mode indicator

The indicator lights up: The system is in the energy-saving mode.

Drive indicator

The indicator lights up: one of the drives (e.g. hard disk, CD/DVD) is being accessed.

Battery indicator

The indicator lights up: The battery is charging.

Caps Lock indicator

The indicator lights up: the Caps Lock key has been pressed. All the characters youtype appear in uppercase. In the case of overlay keys, the character printed on theupper left of the key appears when that key is pressed.

Num Lock indicator

The indicator lights up: the key combination Fn + Num Lock has been pressed.The numeric keypad is activated. In the case of overlay keys, the character printed onthe upper right of the key appears when that key is pressed.

Keyboard

The keyboard of your notebook is subject to continuous wear due to normal use. Thekeyboard markings are subjected to particularly high loads. The keyboard markings canwear off in the course of using the notebook.

The keyboard has been designed to provide all the functions of an enhanced keyboard. Someenhanced keyboard functions are mapped with key combinations.

The following description of keys refers to Windows. Additional functions supported by the keys aredescribed in the relevant manuals supplied with your application programmes.

The figure below shows how to access the different characters on keys with overlaid functions. Theexample applies when the Caps Lock indicator is not lit.

Backspace key The Backspace key deletes the character to the left of the cursor.

Tab key The Tab key moves the cursor to the next tab stop.

Enter key (return) The enter key terminates a command line. The command you have entered isexecuted when you press this key.

Caps Lock

Caps Lock key The Caps Lock key activates uppercase mode (Caps Lock indicator lit). The CapsLock function causes all the characters you type to appear in uppercase. In the caseof overlay keys, the character printed on the upper left of the key appears when thatkey is pressed.To cancel the Caps Lock function, simply press the Caps Lock key again.

Shift key The Shift key causes uppercase characters to appear. In the case of overlay keys, thecharacter printed on the upper left of the key appears when that key is pressed.

Alt Gr

Alt Gr key The Alt Gr key allows one to type the characters printed on the lower right of the

keycaps (e.g. { in the case of the 7 key on the German keyboard).

Fn

Fn key The Fn key enables the special functions indicated on overlay keys (see "Key combinations").If the external keyboard does not feature an Fn key, you can simultaneously pressthe Ctrl + Alt Gr keys or the Ctrl + Alt keys.

Cursor keys The cursor keys move the cursor in the direction of the arrow, i.e. up, down, left, orright.

Country and keyboard settings

If you want to change the country and keyboard settings, proceed as follows:

► Click on Start - Control Panel .

► Double-click on Regional and Language Options.

The current settings are displayed in the Regional Options tab.

► Select the country settings you want to use.

► Click on Apply.

LCD screen

Information on LCD monitorHigh-quality TFT displays are installed in notebooks from Fujitsu Siemens Computers GmbH. Fortechnical reasons, TFT monitors are manufactured for a specific resolution. An optimal, clear picturecan only be ensured in the resolution intended for the respective TFT monitor. A monitor resolutionwhich differs from the specification can result in an unclear picture.

The monitor resolution is understood to be the number of horizontal and vertical pixels (i.e. pictureelements) which make up the monitor display. For example, "UXGA" stands for 1600 x 1200 pixels.Each pixel consists of three so-called subpixels of the colours red, green and blue. As a result, aUXGA monitor consists of 1600 x 1200 x 3 = 5.760.000 subpixels.

Permanently unlit or lit pixels

The standard of production techniques today cannot guarantee an absolutely fault-free screendisplay. A few isolated constant lit or unlit pixels may be present. The maximum permitted number ofpixels faults is stipulated in the stringent international standard ISO 13406-2 (Class II).

Example:

A 15" LCD screen monitor with a resolution of 1024 x 768 has 1024 x 768 = 786432 pixels.Each pixel consists of three subpixels (red, green and blue), so there are almost 2,4 millionsubpixels in total. According to ISO 13406-2 (Class II), a maximum of 4 pixels and 5 subpixelsmay be defective, i. e. a total of 17 faulted subpixels. That is approx. 0.0002 % of the entiresubpixel!

Background lighting

TFT screens are operated with background lighting. The luminosity of the background lighting candecrease during the period of use of the notebook. However, you can set the brightness of yourmonitor individually.

Monitor settings

Setting the desktop area

The screen resolution of the LCD monitor of your notebook is optimally set at the factory.

Changing the LCD screen brightness

You can adjust the brightness of your LCD display with the keys Fn and F8 or F9 .

Changing the font size

Under Start - Control Panel - Appearance and Themes - Display - Advanced you can choose between alarger and a smaller font in the Font size field.

Synchronising the display on the LCD screen and an external monitor

Your notebook supports the simultaneous display on the LCD screen and an external monitor.Pressing the key combination Fn + F3 switches between LCD only, external monitor and LCD andexternal monitor only. The last setting is useful if you would like high resolution and refresh rate onan external monitor.

Battery

The battery supplies your notebook with the necessary power during mobile use. You can increasebattery life by enabling the system's power management features.

The life of the battery is dependent on its proper storage, the number of charging/discharging cyclesand the operating temperature of the notebook.

Charging, caring for and maintaining the battery

Only use batteries approved by Fujitsu Siemens Computers for your notebook.

Take care not to drop the batteries or otherwise damage their casing (fire risk).

If the rechargeable batteries develop a fault please stop using them immediately.

Do not touch the contacts of the batteries.

Never interconnect the positive and negative terminals of a battery.

Batteries are harmful to the environment. You should dispose of them following guidancefrom your local District Council.

Information on the battery charging time is contained in the "Technical data" chapter.

You can charge the battery by connecting the notebook to the power adapter.

The battery can only be charged when the ambient temperature is between 5°C and max. 40°C.

You can maintain long life from your battery by allowing it to discharge fully before you recharge itagain. To do this, leave your notebook turned on when it is operated with the battery. Once thebattery is running low you will hear a warning alarm. If you do not connect the mains adapter withinfive minutes of the warning alarm described above, your notebook will automatically switch off.

Storing the battery

Keep the battery pack between 0°C and +30°C (32 and 122 degrees Fahrenheit). The lower thetemperature at which the batteries are stored, the lower is the rate of self-discharge.

If you store rechargeable batteries for a longer period (longer than two months), the battery chargelevel should be approx. 30%. To prevent exhaustive discharge, check the charging level of thebattery at regular intervals.

To be able to make use of the optimal charging capacity of the batteries, the battery should becompletely discharged and then fully recharged.

If you do not use the batteries for long periods, remove them from the notebook. Neverstore the batteries in the unit.

Monitoring the battery charging level

Windows also has a "Battery status meter" in the taskbar for monitoring the battery capacity. When

you place the mouse pointer on the battery symbol, the system displays the battery status.

Using the power-management features

The notebook uses less power when the power management features are enabled. You will then beable to work longer when using the battery before having to recharge it.

You can also use energy saving modes such as Standby or Hibernate for times when you are notusing your notebook but want to keep coming back to it.

If you are connecting to a network, or the Internet, we advise you to turn off the energysaving modes as they interrupt your connection.When you are finished working with your notebook we advise you to come out of anenergy saving mode and then turn off as normal.Never turn off your notebook while it is in an energy saving mode.

If the notebook is in an energy-saving mode mode:

● Do not connect any external devices.● Do not disconnect any external devices.

● Do not attempt to switch the notebook on if the built-in battery is flat.● No memory modules may be removed or installed.● Do not add or remove a PC card.

The operating system uses ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) for powermanagement under Windows XP. The energy saving functions can be activated under Start - Control

Panel - Performance and Maintenance - Power Options. Under Windows, Hibernate is activated by default.

PC cards

A PC card slot (CardBus or PCMIA) enables the notebook to operate one type I or type II PC card.

► Select the PC card you want to stop and remove.

Optical drive

The optical drive is a Class 1 laser according to IEC 60825-1.It contains a light emitting diode (LED) which may produce a stronger laser beam than aClass 1 laser.

It is dangerous to look directly at this beam.Therefore, do not remove any drive housing parts.

Handling CD/DVDs

Observe the following guidelines when handling CD/DVDs:

● Avoid touching the surface of a CD/DVD. Hold CDs/DVDs by their edges!

● Always store CDs/DVDs in their cases. This will protect CD/DVD from dust,scratches and other damage.

● Protect your CDs/DVDs from dust, mechanical vibration and direct sunlight!

● Avoid storing a CD/DVD in areas subject to high temperatures or humidity.

You may use both 8-cm and 12-cm CDs/DVDs in the optical drive.

When using CDs/DVDs of poor quality vibrations and reading errors may occur.

Drive indicator

The drive indicator flashes when a CD/DVD is inserted. The indicator goes out when the drive is

ready for reading. The indicator lights up when the drive is being accessed. You may only removethe CD/DVD when the indicator is dark.

If the drive indicator does not go out after inserting a CD/DVD, but instead continuesto flash, the drive cannot access the data carrier.

Either the CD/DVD is damaged or dirty or you are using a data carrier that the drive cannotread.

Regional codes for DVD films and DVD players

DVD films and DVD players (e.g. the DVD drive of your notebook) are always provided with aregional code. The regional codes of DVD films and DVD players must match so that the DVD filmcan be played back.

There are six different regional codes:

● Regional code 1: USA and Canada● Regional code 2: Egypt, Europe, Japan, South Africa and the Middle East● Regional code 3: Southeast Asia (including Hong Kong, Indonesia, Philippines, South Korea,

Taiwan)● Regional code 4: Australia, New Zeeland, South Eastern Pacific, Central and South America

and the Caribbean● Regional code 5: Africa (except South Africa), India and the former states of the USSR● Regional code 6: China

The DVD drive of your notebook supports the function RPC-II (Phase II System of Regional PlaybackControl). This function permits the final user to change the regional code of the drive up to five times

to play back corresponding DVD films. Then the last regional code selected is retained and cannotbe changed again.

If a DVD film is to be watched in all regions, it has the regional code 0.

Before buying a DVD film you should check that the regional code of the DVD filmmatches the regional code set for the optical drive of your notebook.

Adjusting AutoPlay function of optical drive

Windows XP uses AutoPlay technology. This allows you to tell Windows XP how to use different

types of CD or DVD disks.

You can set the AutoPlay function of the optical drive according to your needs. For example, if youinsert a music CD you can tell Windows XP to open Media Player and start to play it.

Proceed as follows:

► Click on the Start menu.

► Click on My computer .

The My Computer window will appear.

► Select the CD / DVD icon you want to change and click it with the right-hand mouse ortouchpad button.

A context menu appears.

► Click on Properties.

► Click on the AutoPlay tab.

► Adjust the AutoPlay function to meet your needs.

This chapter will explain how to use each function, and what the benefits are.

Please remember that in some cases, for example, forgetting your password, you can belocked out and unable to access your data. Please note therefore the following hints:

● Make regular backups to external storage devices such as external hard drives, CDor DVD disks.

● Some security functions need you to choose a password. Make a note of thepasswords and keep them in a safe place.

BIOS password protection

You can protect you personal data from unauthorised access with various passwords. By combiningthese different options, you can achieve maximum protection for your system.

Password protection for the BIOS setup

With the Supervisor password you prevent unauthorised opening of the BIOS Setup, and with itaccess to important system settings. In the BIOS Setup you can also activate protection for theoperating system and your hard disk.

Password protection for the operating system

With corresponding settings in the BIOS Setup you can block starting of the operating system. Onlythose who know the supervisor or user password can access the system.

Password protection for your hard disk

By activating the hard disk protection in the BIOS Setup you prevent unauthorised access to the harddisk drive. The hard disk password is checked internally during each system start-up and ensuresthat the hard disk can only be used in conjunction with the related device.

Password protection for BIOS Setup (supervisor and userpassword)

We recommend that you print out the following instructions, as these cannot be displayed whilesetting the password.

You prevent unauthorised opening of the BIOS Setup with both the supervisor and the user password.With the supervisor password you have access to all functions of the BIOS Setup, and with the userpassword only to part of the functions. You can only set a user password if a supervisor passwordhas already been assigned.

Please refer to section "Settings in BIOS Setup" for a description of calling and operatingthe BIOS Setup.

Set the supervisor and user password

► Call BIOS Setup and select the Security menu.

► Mark the Set Supervisor Password field and press the Enter key.

With Enter new Password: you are then requested to enter a password.

► Enter the password and press the Enter key.

With Confirm new Password you are asked to confirm the password.

► Enter the password again and press the Enter key.

With Notice: Changes have been saved you receive a confirmation that the new password has beensaved.

► To assign the user password, mark the field Set User Password and proceed exactly as whenconfiguring the supervisor password.

If you do not want to make any other settings, you can exit BIOS Setup.

► Select the Exit Saving Changes option in the Exit menu.

The notebook is rebooted and the new password is effective. If you now want to open the BIOS Setup,you must first enter your supervisor or user password. Please note that you only have access to afew BIOS settings with the user password.

Changing supervisor or user password

► Recall BIOS Setup and select the Security menu.

When changing the password, proceed exactly as for password assignment.

You can only change the supervisor password when you have logged into the BIOS Setup with thesupervisor password.

Cancelling passwords

To cancel a password (without setting a new password) run the following steps:

Your notebook will now restart and the password is cancelled.

With the supervisor password you simultaneously deactivate the user password.

The had disk password prevents unauthorised access to the hard disk drives and ischecked internally each time the system is booted. The condition for this is that you haveassigned at least the supervisor password.

Activating hard disk protection

Before you connect or disconnect any devices from your notebook please read the safetynotes in the “Important notes“ chapter.

Always read the documentation supplied with the device you wish to connect.

Never connect, or disconnect cables during a thunderstorm.

Never pull on a cable when disconnecting it. Always hold the plug.

Follow the steps below in order, when connecting or disconnecting devices to yournotebook:

Connecting an external monitor

An external monitor can be connected to the notebook.● Using the Fn + F3 key combination you can switch back and forth between the external

monitor and the LCD screen.

● If your notebook is equipped with a TFT monitor, you can display the same picture on theexternal monitor and the LCD screen simultaneously.

► Switch off the notebook and the external monitor.

► Connect the external monitor to the monitor port on your notebook.► Switch your monitor on.

Setting the refresh rate for your external monitor

The refresh rate must be correctly set so that the image does not flicker.

Connecting USB devices

On the USB ports you can connect external devices that also have a USB port (e.g. a printer, ascanner or a modem).

USB devices are hot-pluggable. This means you can connect and disconnect deviceswhile your notebook is running.

USB 1.x has a maximum data transfer rate of 12 Mbit / s.

USB 2.x has a data transfer rate of up to 480 Mbit/s.

Some USB devices will be automatically recognised and installed by your operatingsystem. However, newer devices will need to be installed using the supplied CD / DVD.

Via the Line In port you can connect audio devices with an analogue output to your notebook.

Headphones port

Via the headphone port you can connect either headphones or external loudspeakers to yournotebook.

Connecting FireWire devices

External devices such as digital audio/video devices or other high-speed devices can be connectedto the FireWire port. The FireWire port operates at a speed of 400 Mbit per second.

FireWire devices are hot-pluggable. Therefore, the cables of FireWire devices can beconnected and disconnected with the notebook switched on.

► Connect this data cable of the external devices to the FireWire port of the notebook.

► Plug the power cable of the external device into the mains socket.

Connecting an external device to S-Video Out

You can connect an external device (e.g. a TV) to the S-Video Out socket of your notebook to viewfilms from DVDs, photos or presentations etc.

Removing and installing memory modules

If you are asked by the Hotline/Help Desk to remove and install the memory modules yourself,proceed as follows:

Please note the information provided in the "Safety notes" section in the "Important notes"chapter.

The notebook must be switched off when installing/removing the memory modules, itmust not be in Suspend mode.

Use only memory modules which have been approved for your notebook: 256 or512 Mbyte modules or 1 Gbyte modules of the type DDR2 SO-DIMM.

Do not use force when installing or removing a memory module.

Make sure that foreign objects do not fall into the memory module compartment.

The memory modules are located in a larger service compartment. You must open the entire service

compartment when removing and installing a memory module. Once you have removed the cover,the various components are exposed. These components should be removed and replaced only byauthorised specialists. Therefore, be sure to observe the following:

Individual components (e.g. the process heat sink) can become very hot during operation.Therefore, we recommend that you wait one hour after switching off the notebook beforeremoving or installing the memory modules. Otherwise, there is a danger of being burned!

As some components with ESDs are exposed, please observe the section "Notes oninstalling and removing components" in the chapter "Important notes".



► Unplug the mains adapter from the mains socket.


► Place the notebook upside down on a flat surface.

Settings in BIOS Setup

In BIOS Setup you can set the system functions and the hardware configuration of the notebook. Thesettings can only be changed via the keyboard.

When it is delivered, the notebook is set to factory default settings. You can change these settings in BIOS Setup. Any changes you make take effect as soon as you save and quit the BIOS Setup.

The BIOS Setup programme contains the following menus:

Main: for system settings as time, date, hard disk and monitor selection Advanced : for system settings such as ports and keyboardSecurity: for password settings and safety functions

Boot : for configuring the boot sequence Info: for displaying the system configuration (e.g. processor and memory configuration) Exit : to exit the BIOS Setup

Start BIOS Setup► Restart the notebook (switching ON/OFF or warm boot).

Operating BIOS Setup

Press the F1 key to display help on the operation of BIOS Setup.The description of the individual settings is shown in the right-hand window of the BIOSSetup.

You can revert to the default settings for the BIOS Setup menu you are currently in, byusing the F9 function key.

► Use the cursor key or to select the menu you wish to access to make changes.


The menu is displayed on the screen.

► Use the cursor key or to select the field you wish to change.

► Press the Enter key to confirm your selection.

► Press the ESC key to exit the selected menu.

► For future reference, make a note of the changes you have made (for example, in this manual).

Exiting BIOS Setup

To exit BIOS Setup, select the Exit menu from the menu bar. You can then decide which settings youwant to save. The Exit menu offers the following options.

You must mark the required option and activate it with the Enter key.

Exit Saving Changes

Select Exit Saving Changes and Yes to save the current settings and exit the BIOS Setup. The device isrebooted and the new settings come into effect.

Exit Discarding Changes

Select Exit Discarding Changes and Yes to discard the changes you have made. The settings whichwere in force when BIOS Setup was called remain effective. BIOS Setup is terminated and the device isrebooted.

Load Setup Default

To revert all the menus of BIOS Setup to the default entries, select Load Setup Default and Yes.

Discard Changes

To load the values of all the menus of BIOS Setup that were in effect when BIOS Setup was called,select Discard Changes and Yes. If you want to exit BIOS Setup with these settings, select Exit SavingChanges and Yes.

Save Changes

To save settings without exiting BIOS Setup, select Save Changes and Yes.

Reinstalling Windows XP

You can reinstall the Windows XP operating system with the "Windows XP Recovery CD" and the

"Drivers & Utilities" CD/DVD.The instructions are provided on the case of the Recovery CD.

During the reinstall process your personal files and any installed programs will be deleted.We advise that you backup your files to an external hard drive, or CD / DVD disk beforeyou start.


► Press the F12 key when the message F2: Setup F12: Boot Menu appears on thescreen.

► Insert the "Windows XP Recovery CD" into the optical drive.► Select the CD-ROM and press the Enter key.

► Follow the instructions on the screen.

After the installation you must install all the drivers again. Some installed hardware components willnot be correctly supported until this has been done.

► Insert the "Drivers & Utilities" CD/DVD into the optical drive.

The CD starts automatically.

► Click on the Desk Update button.

► Select Automatic driver installation (Express) and click Start installation.

Should the picture freeze when playing some DVD films, deactivate the accelerated hardwaredecryption (it is activated in the default setting; this can be recognised from the checkmark in thecorresponding checkbox).

► Place the DVD in the drive tray with the label facing upwards.

► Push in the drive tray until you feel it lock into place.

► Wait until the WinDVD starts.
