Program components

While each program has its own unique style, heavily influenced by the national and local characteristics of the country and city where it is located, all AMIDEAST programs include the following distinctive features.

TRANSCRIPTS AND INSTITUTION OF RECORDAftercompletinganAMIDEASTsemester/academicyear orsummereducationabroadprogram,studentsreceivean officialAMIDEASTGradeReportthatdocumentslettergradesandcreditreceived.Anothercopyofthegradereportissenttothestudent’suniversity.Alternatively,studentscanrequest(foranadditionalfeeof$350)atranscriptissuedbyAMIDEAST’sInstitutionofRecord(IoR),NortheasternUniversity.ShouldahomeinstitutionadvisorindicatethatatranscriptfromtheIoRisrequired,thestudentorhomeinstitutionwillbebilledforthisfee.

These are challenging times, particularly for those involved in programs for American students in the Middle East and North Africa. At AMIDEAST, student health, safety, and security are the number-one priorities. While no one can guarantee that unexpected risks or situations will not arise, AMIDEAST continually strives to provide the support necessary for students to have a safe and healthy education abroad experience.

HEALTH & SAFETY

STUDENT HEALTH AND INSURANCEAllstudentsarerequiredtosubmita completedmedicalprofilepriorto departure.AMIDEASTstaffreviewthisinformationandworkwithstudentstomakenecessaryaccommodationsforanyhealthordietaryneeds.Aspartoftheprogramfee,AMIDEASTprovidesmedicalandaccidentinsuranceforallstudentsthroughHTHWorldwideInsurance.Onceincountry,AMIDEASTprogramstaffhelpstudentsdealwithmedicalissuesastheyariseandhavealistofrecommendedprovidersandhospitalsbothinthehostcityandinareasvisitedonexcursions.Inadditiontomedicalinsurance,HTHprovideshigh-qualitymedical,political,andsecurityevacuationcoverage.

PRE-DEPARTURE INFORMATIONPartofensuringthatstudentsremainsafewhileabroadincludesprovidingthemwithin-depthinformationinpreparationfortheirtimeincountry.AMIDEASTstaffsendsstudentsaseriesofpre-departureemailsaddressingtopicssuchasflightinformation,academicmatters,visas,insurance,safetyandsecurity.Inaddition,studentsareprovidedwithanextensivehandbookthatoutlinesculturalandlogisticalissuestheywillfaceduringtheirtimeabroad.Inadditiontowrittenmaterial,studentsalsoparticipateinanonlinePre-DepartureOrientationwithAMIDEASTstaffonemonthpriortodeparture.

PRESENCE IN THE REGIONAMIDEASTwasestablishedin1951tobuildbridgesof understandingbetweenAmericansandthepeoplesoftheMiddleEastandNorthAfrica.TodayitismoreimportantthaneverthatAmericanslearnmoreaboutthiscriticalareaasweworktobuildamorepeacefulfuture.AMIDEASThasfieldofficesin12countriesthroughtheregion;theoldesthaveexistedformorethan50years.ThislongstandingphysicalpresenceintheregionhasenabledAMIDEASTtodevelop anextensivenetworkofcontactswithlocaleducationalandotherinstitutions,organizations,governmentoffices,and civilsociety.

RISK MANAGEMENTAlthoughitisnotpossibletoeliminaterisk,AMIDEASTiscommittedtoensuringthatitsprogramsoperateinsafeandsecureenvironments.AMIDEAST’slongstandingphysicalpresenceintheMiddleEastandNorthAfricaandlonghistoryofservicetolocalcommunitieshaveenabledthedevelopmentofstronglocalnetworksandrelationshipswithlocalinstitutionsandindividuals.AMIDEAST’sCountryDirectorsmaintainclosetiestotheRegionalSecurityOfficersattheU.S.Embassies,andlocalprogramstaffmembersareincludedintheU.S.Embassywardennetwork.AMIDEASTisalsoamemberoftheDepartmentofState’sOverseasSecurityAdvisoryCouncil.

AMIDEASTfacilitiesareaccessibleonlythroughcontrolledentrances.Localstaffisabletosendouttextmessages(SMS)simultaneouslytoallstudents’program-providedmobilephonestoupdatetheminstantlyasissuesrelatedtohealth,safety,andsecuritydevelop.Localstaffmaintainsavitallocalnetworkandcontributestotheunderstandingofongoinganddevelopingsituationsontheground.

Inaddition,tofurtherenhanceaccesstoup-to-the-minuteinformationincrisissituations,AMIDEASTcontractswithiJET:IntelligentRiskSystems,tooffercertainservicesdirectlytoAMIDEASTstudents.Lastly,aninternalcommunicationsystemlinksAMIDEASTHeadquartersinWashington,DC,withfieldofficesintheMiddleEastandNorthAfrica,andkeystaffmembersareavailableatalltimestorespondtoemergencysituations.

IN-COUNTRY ORIENTATIONUponarrivalincountry,AMIDEASTstudentsparticipateinanin-depthorientation designed to introduce themtolocalcultureanddailylifeandfamiliarizethemwiththelogisticsoftheprogram.Orientationcombinesstructuredinformationsessionswith organizedactivitiesandfreetimetofamiliarizeparticipantswiththeurbanenvironment.Topicssuchassafetyandhealth,culturaladjustment,programregulations,participantresponsibilitiesandotheressentialinformationarediscussedindetail.Duringthein-countryorientationstudentsalsomeettheirprofessors,takelanguageplacementtests,becomefamiliarwiththeprogram’sITenvironment,andlearnhowtonavigatetheirnewcity.

In Egypt the AMIDEAST Education Abroad EXPERIENCE IS:

UNUSUAL: VeryfewstudentsliveandstudyincitiesaspoliticallyimportantandhistoricallysignificantasCairo.AstheArabSpringeventsin2011illustrated,EgyptisattheforefrontofreformandchangeintheArabworld.InacityaslargeandbustlingasCairo,studentsbenefitfromtheuniquesupportofferedbydedicatedprogramstaffsothattheyareabletoaccessEgyptonalevelthatwouldnototherwisebepossible.

AMIDEAST Education Abroad Programs in theArabWorldiscommittedtoprovidingfinancialassistancetostudentswith demonstratedfinancialneed.AMIDEASTcurrentlyawardstwotypesofscholarships:

• AMIDEASTEDUCATIONABROAD NEED-BASED SCHOLARSHIPS are made intheformofaprogramfeereductionand normallyrangebetween$500and$2,000.

• AMIDEAST BLOG ABROAD SCHOLARSHIPS areawardedtothreeorfourstudents on AMIDEAST semester and academic yearprograms.Eachstudentselectedmustsubmitablogentrybasedontheirexperienceabroad everytwoweeksandwillreceive$1,000towardtheirAMIDEASTprogramintheformofatuitionreduction.Whiledevelopingtravelandcreativewritingskills,studentsalsohavetheopportunitytocriticallyreflectinwritingontheireducationabroadexperiencewithAMIDEAST.

FundingisavailableonlytoAmericanstudentsonAMIDEASTEducationAbroadProgramsinEgypt,Jordan,Morocco,Oman,andTunisia.Awardswillbemadeonlytostudentswhosubmitacompletedscholarshipapplicationandacompleteprogramapplicationbytheestablisheddeadlines (seetable).

Scholarshipapplicationsfromallqualifiedstudentswillbeconsidered.

However,preferenceisgiventoapplicantswhomeetoneormoreofthefollowingcriteria:
