The Asian Media Information and Communication Centre (AMIC) is a non-profit NGO with the mission of spearheading the development of media and communication expertise in Asia within the broad framework of economic, social, and cultural progress.

It exists to encourage ethical and social responsibility of the media to support democratic access and participation in media development and production, and to provide opportunities for empowerment of disadvantaged sectors in the media environment.

It performs these roles on many fronts:

As a research centre it examines critical issues in the media and communication sector and their implications for development.

As a resource centre it gathers and disseminates knowledge about communication and its effects in Asia.

By conducting training and professional consultations it is active in capacity building for the media and their users.

    Chairmans Message

This past year has been a year of transition for AMIC.

The year started with a new face at the helm of the Secretariat after Acting Secretary-General, Ms Maria Chi-Chi Mercedes F. Robles, left us at the end of 2012 to return to her university in the Philippines. Chi-Chi, who was also an

AMIC Board member, gave sterling service in guiding and consolidating the organisation throughout her year. Her proactive stewardship laid the groundwork for Associate Professor Martin Hadlow, who joined us in January 2013, to carry forward the role of Acting Secretary-General.

By the end of 2013, despite the pressures of reduced fund-ing, AMICs finances were in surplus, thus ensuring that, whatever the future, AMIC could go forward with confidence as a viable and relevant regional entity. To secure long-term sustainability, the Board had agreed to an approach whereby three components, namely membership subscriptions, jour-nals and publications, and project and conference activities take an equal share in providing AMIC with its funding base.

A major highlight of the year was our annual conference held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, with local host Universitas Gadjah Mada, a leading Indonesian university. We could not have chosen a more hospitable, generous and able partner. Three ministers were featured in the programme. The conference attracted more than 300 paper presenters, making the event one of our most successful.

The Board of Directors met during the Yogyakarta confer-ence; AMICs Annual General Meeting (AGM) attracted a solid turn-out of members and gave endorsements to AMICs audited accounts and on-going plans and strategies.

Another key event was RadioAsia 2013, held this year in Hanoi, Vietnam. RadioAsia was initiated by AMIC almost a decade ago and, in collaboration with our main partner, the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU), it has become an important activity for radio professionals from the region and beyond. This years host body was the Voice of Vietnam, the countrys national radio service.

During the year, our long-time and generous host, the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Informa-tion (WKWSCI) at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), gave notice that it was keen to negotiate a new relationship with AMIC. We have long enjoyed considerable financial and in-kind support from the WKWSCI, includ-ing office facilities and the core funding of major positions within the AMIC Secretariat. As the WKWSCI is, itself, undergoing a renewal of its focus and modus operandi, it goes without saying that AMIC is also part of the Schools

spotlight. AMICs Board of Management has been in regular contact with management of the School.

Our membership numbers continue to grow at a steady and satisfactory pace. We reinforced our search for new ways of engaging with both individuals and institutions throughout the region. AMICs strength lies in the commitment of its members to the shared ideals and goals. AMIC has continued to collaborate with major global agencies, such as UNESCO, like-minded international NGOs, such as the International Associa-tion for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR), and with prospective new national partners in several countries.

We had a number of personnel changes during the year, both at Secretariat and Board level. Within the Secretariat, AMICs Head of Publications and Research, Associate Professor Rachel Khan, returned to the University of the Philippines in Manila towards the latter part of the year. During her time with AMIC, Rachel had guided the 2013 conference activities and many of our books and journal publications.

At the Board level, we bid farewell to the Deputy Chair, Ms Robles (Philippines), Dr. Robert Seward (Japan), Dr. Moham-mad Zin bin Nordin (Malaysia) and Professor Gerardo (Gerry) Ramirez Josue (Philippines). Their efforts have been hugely appreciated and we thank them for their service and commit-ment to AMIC.

Taking their place, we welcomed to the new Board Mr. Ramon Tuazon (Philippines), Dr. Pirongrong Ramasoota Rananand (Thailand), Professor Zhengrong Hu (China) and Professor Syed Arabi Idid (Malaysia).

This year also marked my final year as AMIC Chairman and I have stepped aside to be replaced by Mr. Arun Mahizhnan of Singapore. Arun has long experience with AMIC and, with your support, will, I know, ensure that the organisation goes on to greater heights.

As is the tradition at AMIC, I will remain as Chairman dHonneur and, thus, contribute my services and input as a member of the Board. My time as Chairman has been exciting and rewarding, and I have valued the friendship and assistance I have received from the AMIC Board, members, the Secretariat, the WKWSCI and a range of international partners. I look forward to seeing you all again at AMIC conferences and work-shops and to remaining committed to the aims and objectives that have made AMIC a world-leader in Asian communications.

    Yours sincerely,

    Dr. Ang Peng HwaChairmanAMIC

Evolving Asian Culture Gateways: the Korean Wave & BeyondEdited by: Su Jung Kim, Kalinga Seneviratne and Madanmohan RaoISBN: 9789814136198

Since the late 1990s, an increasing number of Korean television dramas, movies, pop songs and their associated celebrities have gained immense popularity in East and Southeast Asian countries. News media and trade magazines have recognized the rise of Korean popular culture in Asia by dubbing it the Korean wave or Hallyu. Yet about a decade ago, Korean popular culture did not have such export capacity, and was not even critically acclaimed by scholars. Thus, this book is aimed at finding a way to represent Koreas pop-culture in the new framework of the Asian media eco-system. Although Asias pop culture has been marginalized by the Western mainstream for generations, the new environment can help Asia find a way to represent their culture and to ride on the Rising Asia bandwagon.

A New Media Asia After 40 years, the flagship magazine-journal of AMIC takes on a new look and feel while maintaining its core of peer-reviewed original research articles. With a new editorial team headed by Prof. Cherian George of NTU-WKWSCI, the revamped publication now includes additional sections that highlight new ideas, trends and concerns. The new sections include feature and opinion articles as well as interviews, book reviews

Social Media and the Asian Experience: Exploring its Influence and ReachThe book discusses both the emerging theories related to social media and highlights its growing influence and reach. Social media such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are now invading the territory once dominated by traditional media. Authors from key Asian countries explore specific applications of new media in the field of information and communication even as they document case studies that exhibit their potential in the industry of mass media. The book will be scheduled to be released towards the last quarter of 2014.

With these changes, we hope to continue to expand the profile of our contributors and readers to include researchers, educators, students, practitioners and policy-makers who are interested in engaging with media and communication inquiry at various points on the cycle of knowledge creation.
