French as an Official Language
o French is one of Canada’s official languages.
o French is recognized and valued as an integral component of Ontario’s education system.
o The vision of the French program in Ontario is that students will communicate and interact with growing confidence in French.
o French is a compulsory subject, mandatory from Grades 4 to 9. Students are encouraged to study French in Grades 10 to 12.
o Grade 9 French is offered at the open level for students who are new to the province or have fewer than 600 hours of instruction in French.

Making the Choice…
o Parents and students will select courses in collaboration with elementary school teachers, guidance counsellors, student success teachers and administrators.
o It is important that students self-assess honestly, matching their ability with their interests and aptitudes.
o Students often choose a combination of course types to support different learning interests and styles.
o Remember that initial decisions made in grade 8 are not “final” decisions. There are many pathways to the destination your child dreams of!
Secondary School Planning
Important to know:
o how the student learns best;
o the student’s interests;
o the diploma requirements to graduate;
o the prerequisites for courses;
o what experiential learning opportunities are available;
o the admission requirements for postsecondary opportunities
(college, apprenticeship, university, workplace).

o Tuesday, September 8, 2020 – 1st day of school for
Grade 9s
Registration FormALL sections must be filled out
o Check with your elementary school teachers regarding the
due date to the elementary school.

o Course selection cannot be processed without a completed
registration formo All Registration forms will need to be at AMHS by January 31
