Proposed Park Avenue Mural Project
My name is Mike Sekletar and I’m a local artist born and raised in Amherst. I came up with the mural idea about a year ago and I’m seeking the opportunity to create the painting as a tribute to the men and women that have served and continue to serve our country.
The iconic photo taken by Joe Rosenthal in 1945 is the most reproduced and arguably the most famous photo ever taken. To many people it signifies much more than the capture of the key position of Mt. Siribachi by the Marines in WWII, it signifies freedom and the privileges we have today because of the men and women who have given their lives for us.
I would like the opportunity to paint the mural in the fashion of original black and white photograph. Using the real flag and staff above the building would definitely be a one of kind. At one time the the National D-Day museum had a similar mural with a flag rising above the building, but they have torn down the original building and the that mural no longer exists. This would be the only one like it in the country. It would be a landmark in Amherst that would bring a tastefully executed painting of the iconic photo and show our support and thanks to the armed forces of the United States .. without being overly militant.
The idea has gained a wide range of local supporters and has been receiving very positive reviews. I have spoken to several local veterans organizations and they are all willing to support the project in various ways. Sherwin Williams has expressed interest in this community project and they are willing to donate materials. Many individuals have expressed interest and are willing to donate their time and money to see the mural come to life.
I am seeking the opportunity to work with the Design Review Board and hopefully manifest this idea into reality.
Thank you for your time and I look forward to speaking with the board further about the mural projects’ details.
