The clerk of council is appointed by council.

City Council’s committees include finance, streets, executive, buildings and land, ordinance, and police and fire. The committees meet the first and third Monday of the month at

The Amherst Police Department is built on the philosophy of working together with the schools, citizens and business leaders as a team with loyalty, honesty, dedication, respect and integrity to make Amherst the best city that it can be. They are committed to providing security and safety to the citizens that they are proud to serve and protect. They will treat all persons with compassion and understanding, always demonstrating

the strong belief that one should treat others as they would like to be treated.

Amherst Fire Department414 Church StreetEmergency 911440-988-4117 - Non-Emergency

The Amherst Fire Department, staffed by 33 highly-trained firefighters who use the latest firefighting equipment, is a paid on-call organization. The department is also involved in haz-ardous materials response, heavy rescue, dive team and first responder medical response. They also assist the Lorain County Emergency Response Team in confined space, trench rescue and mass casualty incidents.

The fire chief is the only full-time position. Firefighters respond to the fire station from their homes or workplace. Their response time is excellent in the city of Amherst and Amherst Township. They possess state-of-the-art equipment

that allows them to operate successfully, and they train on all aspects of fire service. Their traditional values are reflected in professionalism as proud members of the Amherst Fire Department.

The Amherst Fire Department has an outstanding fire safety education program that reaches out to preschool, elementary and middle grades to teach children at a very young age the do’s and don’ts of fire safety. They disseminate fire safety to the general public at different events during the year to educate citizens and offer free home fire and safety inspections.

The Amherst Fire Department has two active part-time fire inspectors who focus on all business, school, nursing homes and medical facilities within the City of Amherst. These inspectors work hard to insure that establishments abide by the fire code and city ordinances pertaining to fire safety.

Main Street Amherst: Preserving Our Heritage

n an effort to preserve Amherst’s heritage, the city was pleased to receive the designation of Main Street Amherst in 2002. Main Street Amherst is a

501(c)(3) non-profi t organization whose mission is to promote and maintain an historic and economically vital downtown that is attractive and accessible to people of all ages. The city received the designation from Heritage Ohio, Inc., a statewide, not-for-profi t organization dedicated to encouraging and assisting people and organizations to protect and preserve their heritage.

The Main Street program is designed to improve all aspects of the downtown or central business district, producing both tangible and intangible benefi ts. Improving economic management, strengthening public participation and making down-town a fun place to visit are as critical to Main Street’s future as recruit-ing new businesses, rehabilitating buildings and expanding parking.

The Main Street program has earned national recognition as a

practical strategy appropriately scaled to a community’s local resources and conditions. And because it is a locally driven program, all initiatives stem from local issues and concerns.

Main Street Amherst volunteers are striving to bring special events to the downtown and surrounding area to increase public awareness of what goods and services are available to the general public. Our motto has become “Come Help Us Grow.”

Come to Amherst and experience the quaint, small-town feeling of a community that cares about its economic growth. Make Main Street Amherst your next destination!

ountry Day School was founded in 1961 by Jacqueline and John Murray on the foundation that customers should be treated as friends, and not just another number.

In 2000, Michelle Lucas became a preschool teacher at the school with aspirations of someday owning her own childcare center. Only four years later, with a degree in childhood education from Lorain County Community College, she purchased the center. Since Michelle’s ownership, the center has expanded to include infants, toddlers, and an after school program. She takes great pride in Country Day School because her dedicated employees provide trust and security for all of the children at the school. She understands the importance of being involved in the school’s activities, thus she goes to the center each day, making herself accessible to her customers. Michelle is proud to be a resident and business owner in the beautiful community of Amherst.

Amherst Schools: Student Focused – Moving Forward

eople and partnerships create success in Amherst Schools. With strong support from residents, government, and business partners, Amherst Schools is one of the top

academic districts in Northeastern Ohio. Together, our leadership team and employees are continually exploring and implementing ways to enhance students’ and residents’ value from their public schools.

Opportunities for success are abundant in the Amherst School system. Over 4,100 students participate in an exciting classroom atmosphere supported by a comprehensive curriculum, diverse student activities and clubs, engaging teachers and committed support staff. Performances in the arts and athletics are other examples of the skills and opportunities that students enjoy. Students earn numerous honors in academic, athletic, and art competitions.

Our goal is to prepare students for their future beyond high school: be it college, technical training, or service in the military. For nearly a decade, Amherst Schools have consistently

earned outstanding academic honors for student achievement from Ohio. Student test scores on college entrance tests are consistently above both State and National averages. A challenging curriculum, along with diverse extracurricular activities, offers each student opportunities to grow, explore, and succeed academically and as an individual.

Our instructional staff is a key to learning. Over half of our teachers have a master’s degree. The daily attendance rate for the teaching staff is the highest in Lorain County (96.1%). All teachers instruct in the subject area in which they are certificated/licensed. Tutors and other support staff help students and teachers. Each building has interactive classroom technology to provide lessons that engage students and increase readiness for their future.

The curriculum complies with State Content Standards and reflects a blend of college prep, vocational, advanced placement,

t. Joseph School delivers on its slogan of “A Higher Standard” through academic test scores, educational enrichment, and dedication to spiritual values and com-

munity service. Celebrating its 127th year, the school is proud of its cutting-edge technology with a modern science lab, interactive white boards in every classroom, 70 wireless laptop computers, 7,000-volume library, and advanced classes in math and language arts.

Extra-curricular include classes in Spanish, Phys Ed, Art, and Music along with Student Council, Aca-demic Team, Open Computer Lab, and Storytelling and Book Clubs.

We have full-day Kindergarten along with Preschool for 3- and 4-year-olds and Day Care. Weekly Mass, retreats, and special observances of Catholic holy days highlight our religion curriculum, while social justice is empha-sized through service projects for children in distress, migrants, the homeless, and the environment. Academics are enriched with band concerts, art shows, science fairs, fi eld trips, and patriotic assemblies.

gifted, and other programs to serve the diverse needs of all students. Pre-engineering and medical technology courses are two examples of the innovative and unique programming offered at the high school. These offerings and others are a result of the strong partnership the district has with the Lorain County Joint Vocational School and Lorain County Community College.

Citizens place a high value on the important role education plays in building a thriving, diverse community. Collectively,

they strongly support the school district’s pursuit of excellence. The joint development of the Strategic Plan provides a five-year road map for continuous improvement. A clear learning mission, with precise and measurable goals, keeps the community and staff focused on five areas: Academics, Financial Operations, Facilities, Communication, and Community

Involvement. Continued engagement of employees, residents, and students help keep the plan on course.

Continued collaboration between the school district, business, civic, and community is the key to our future success. We welcome you to visit our website at www.amherst.k12.oh.us to learn more about Amherst Schools.

ne day, the stock market is down 200 points; the next day, it’s up 300. How are you supposed to cope with this turbulence?

Here are a few “rules of the road” to help:First, create a plan that defines your long-term goals and

establishes a strategy to achieve them. Then take steps to implement your plan. The sooner you start investing, the better.

Next, stay invested. It takes courage to buy stocks in a lengthy bear market, but it’s essential that you stay invested during good times and bad. By purchasing high-quality investments, and holding them for the long term, you’ll have a good chance of success.

Finally, diversify your investment dollars across a range of stocks, mutual funds, bonds, government securities and other vehicles. Diversification can help you reduce the effects of volatility – and increase your chances for success.

COMMUNITY GUIDEAmherst● Homes & Real Estate

esidents of some cutting-edge communities are experi-encing a breath of fresh air – literally! From water fea-tures and fire pits to arbors and lush gardens, new ways

to enjoy the outdoors are an increasingly popular feature of new homes. Covered porches and verandas are becoming more popular, as are paver and stamped concrete patios. Most exciting are homes that offer a central courtyard; an innovative new floor plan focused around a private outdoor living space. These open-air courtyards are surrounded by the rest of the home, having multiple points of access and windows overlooking the court-yard from every room in the house. By offering a creative new way to bring in more natural light and an airy feel, these ‘interior patios’ are an appealing way for homeowners to experience the pleasures of outdoor living with all the conveniences of home.

Today, builders like Epcon Communities are bringing the outdoors in. Quarry Lakes at Amherst, Epcon’s maintenance-free condominium community, is now offering three new ‘Courtyard Series’ designs in its desirable Amherst location. Each plan features private outdoor patios, oversized great rooms with tray ceilings, gourmet kitchens with islands and breakfast bars, and spacious master suites with dramatic walk-in showers. Buyers can fully customize their new home and can even add optional basements or second floor bonus suites to their free standing condominium.

The biggest draw of the ‘Courtyard Series’ is undoubtedly the large outdoor living space. Averaging approximately 500 square feet, these courtyards not only provide more energy-efficient living with sun-drenched flagstones in the summer and optional fire pits in cooler months, but also offer an ideal private outdoor sanctuary right in your own home. Epcon also continues to offer the popular ‘Classic’ and ‘Cathedral’ series at Quarry Lakes. No matter which of the seven designs buyers choose, each homeowner will enjoy the community’s private clubhouse and pool, complete with a large club room, state-of-the-art fitness center, and heated in-ground swimming pool. Without

Bringing the Outdoors Inany outdoor chores, residents enjoy plenty of free time and a much easier lifestyle.

Quarry Lakes will even help buyers sell their existing homes through its one-of-a-kind ‘Easy Move’ program. Call Quarry Lakes at 440-336-0056 or visit them online at www.QuarryLakesAmherst.com to learn more about this exciting community.

By offering a creative new way to bring in more natural light and an airy feel, these ‘interior patios’ are an appealing way for homeowners to experience the pleasures of outdoor living with all the conveniences of home.
