The southern route to the volcano beginsat exit 21 off Interstate 5 at Woodland.SR 503 meanders eastward along the LewisRiver, passing rural vistas and the shores ofLake Merwin and Lake Yale en route tothe monument entrance. The southernportion of the monument offers multipleopportunities to witness mature landscapesunaffected by the 1980 eruption as well asfascinating examples of ancient volcanicactivity from centuries-old eruptions.
